Unhealthy diets, the rise of non-communicable diseases, and the declining health of the planet are highly intertwined, where food production and consumption are major drivers of increases in ...greenhouse gas emissions, substantial land use, and adverse health such as cancer and mortality. To assess the potential co-benefits from shifting to more sustainable diets, we aimed to investigate the associations of dietary greenhouse gas emissions and land use with all-cause and cause-specific mortality and cancer incidence rates.
Using data from 443 991 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, a multicentre prospective cohort, we estimated associations between dietary contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and land use and all-cause and cause-specific mortality and incident cancers using Cox proportional hazards regression models. The main exposures were modelled as quartiles. Co-benefits, encompassing the potential effects of alternative diets on all-cause mortality and cancer and potential reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and land use, were estimated with counterfactual attributable fraction intervention models, simulating potential effects of dietary shifts based on the EAT–Lancet reference diet.
In the pooled analysis, there was an association between levels of dietary greenhouse gas emissions and all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio HR 1·13 95% CI 1·10–1·16) and between land use and all-cause mortality (1·18 1·15–1·21) when comparing the fourth quartile to the first quartile. Similar associations were observed for cause-specific mortality. Associations were also observed between all-cause cancer incidence rates and greenhouse gas emissions, when comparing the fourth quartile to the first quartile (adjusted HR 1·11 95% CI 1·09–1·14) and between all-cause cancer incidence rates and land use (1·13 1·10–1·15); however, estimates differed by cancer type. Through counterfactual attributable fraction modelling of shifts in levels of adherence to the EAT–Lancet diet, we estimated that up to 19–63% of deaths and up to 10–39% of cancers could be prevented, in a 20-year risk period, by different levels of adherence to the EAT–Lancet reference diet. Additionally, switching from lower adherence to the EAT–Lancet reference diet to higher adherence could potentially reduce food-associated greenhouse gas emissions up to 50% and land use up to 62%.
Our results indicate that shifts towards universally sustainable diets could lead to co-benefits, such as minimising diet-related greenhouse gas emissions and land use, reducing the environmental footprint, aiding in climate change mitigation, and improving population health.

Vegetarians may have a lower risk of cancer overall; however, for specific cancer sites, the evidence is limited. We aimed to assess the associations of vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets with risks ...of all cancer, colorectal cancer, postmenopausal breast cancer, and prostate cancer, and to explore the role of potential mediators.
We conducted a prospective analysis of 472,377 UK Biobank participants who were free from cancer at recruitment. Participants were categorised into regular meat-eaters (n = 247,571), low meat-eaters (n = 205,385), fish-eaters (n = 10,696), and vegetarians (n = 8,685) based on dietary questions completed at recruitment. Multivariable-adjusted Cox regressions were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for all cancer incidence and separate cancer sites across diet groups.
After an average follow-up of 11.4 years, 54,961 incident cancers were identified from health records, including 5,882 colorectal, 7,537 postmenopausal breast, and 9,501 prostate cancers. Compared with regular meat-eaters, being a low meat-eater, fish-eater, or vegetarian were all associated with a lower risk of all cancer (HR:0.98, 95% CI:0.96–1.00; 0.90, 0.84–0.96; 0.86, 0.80–0.93, respectively). Being a low meat-eater was associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer in comparison to regular meat-eaters (0.91, 0.86–0.96). Vegetarian postmenopausal women had a lower risk of breast cancer (0.82, 0.68–0.99), which was attenuated and non-significant after adjusting for BMI (0.87, 0.72–1.05); in mediation analyses, BMI was found to possibly mediate the observed association. In men, being a fish-eater or a vegetarian was associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer (0.80, 0.65–0.99 and 0.69, 0.54–0.89, respectively).
The lower risk of colorectal cancer in low meat-eaters is consistent with previous evidence suggesting an adverse impact of higher meat intake. The lower risk of postmenopausal breast cancer in vegetarian women may be explained by their lower BMI. It is unclear if the other differences observed for all cancers and for prostate cancer reflect causal relationships or are due to residual confounding or differences in cancer detection.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody levels can be used to assess humoral immune responses following SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination, and may predict risk of ...future infection. Higher levels of SARS-CoV-2 anti-Spike antibodies are known to be associated with increased protection against future SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, variation in antibody levels and risk factors for lower antibody levels following each round of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination have not been explored across a wide range of socio-demographic, SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination, and health factors within population-based cohorts.
Samples were collected from 9361 individuals from TwinsUK and ALSPAC UK population-based longitudinal studies and tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Cross-sectional sampling was undertaken jointly in April-May 2021 (TwinsUK, N=4256; ALSPAC, N=4622), and in TwinsUK only in November 2021-January 2022 (N=3575). Variation in antibody levels after first, second, and third SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with health, socio-demographic, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination variables were analysed. Using multivariable logistic regression models, we tested associations between antibody levels following vaccination and: (1) SARS-CoV-2 infection following vaccination(s); (2) health, socio-demographic, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination variables.
Within TwinsUK, single-vaccinated individuals with the lowest 20% of anti-Spike antibody levels at initial testing had threefold greater odds of SARS-CoV-2 infection over the next 6-9 months (OR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.4, 6.0), compared to the top 20%. In TwinsUK and ALSPAC, individuals identified as at increased risk of COVID-19 complication through the UK 'Shielded Patient List' had consistently greater odds (two- to fourfold) of having antibody levels in the lowest 10%. Third vaccination increased absolute antibody levels for almost all individuals, and reduced relative disparities compared with earlier vaccinations.
These findings quantify the association between antibody level and risk of subsequent infection, and support a policy of triple vaccination for the generation of protective antibodies.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the role of high sugar intake from sweet food/beverages and high fibre intake as predictors of mood disorders, and as moderators of the association between ...financial insecurity and mood disorders. The study was based on repeat measures of diet and mood disorders in the Whitehall II cohort. Analyses used random effects models with multiple 2, 5 and 10-year follow-up cycles. Diet was measured using food frequency questionnaires and defined as sugar intake from sweet food/beverages and fibre intake. Mood disorders were defined as common mental disorder (CMD, measured with the General Health Questionnaire), depression measured using Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale, and the Revised Clinical Interview Schedule. Sugar intake from sweet food/beverages was associated with increased odds of incident CMD after 5 years in men and with recurrent depression in women. Findings in men were similar when meta-analysing associations with incident antidepressant intake in Whitehall II and the EPIC-Norfolk study. There was no evidence that mood disorders are associated with a change in sugar intake from sweet food/beverages. Fibre intake was associated with reduced odds of incident CMD after 5 and 10 years. There was no strong evidence that mood disorders are associated with a change in fibre intake. Financial insecurity consistently increased odds of mood disorders, but there was no evidence for effect modification by sugar intake from sweet food/beverages or fibre intake. Findings suggest an adverse effect of sugar intake from sweet food/beverages and a protective role of a diet high in fibre in long-term psychological health. There was no evidence that free sugar or fibre intake could moderate associations between financial insecurity and psychological health. Future research needs to clarify whether associations reflect a causal relationship.
This is the fourth international preparatory study designed to develop International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF, and Children and Youth version, ICF-CY) Core Sets for ...Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Examine functioning of individuals diagnosed with ASD as documented by the ICF-CY in a variety of clinical settings. A cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 11 units from 10 countries. Clinical investigators assessed functioning of 122 individuals with ASD using the ICF-CY checklist. In total, 139 ICF-CY categories were identified: 64 activities and participation, 40 body functions and 35 environmental factors. The study results reinforce the heterogeneity of ASD, as evidenced by the many functional and contextual domains impacting on ASD from a clinical perspective.
