LPS, a potent activator of the innate immune system, is commonly used to investigate the acute phase response to infection, including anorexia. We investigated the association between the intensity ...of LPS anorexia and (1) the activation of brain sites initially responding to LPS, measured with c-Fos expression, and (2) co-localization of c-Fos responses with tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), a marker of catecholaminergic (CA) neurons, in the A1 noradrenergic cells (A1). Male Long-Evans rats received 1
ml/kg ip injections of 0, 12.5 or 100
μg/kg LPS at dark onset. Food intake was measured in one set of rats, and c-Fos and its co-localization with TH in another, unfed set 90
min post-injection. LPS reduced 120
min food intake in a significantly dose-related manner. LPS increased c-Fos expression in the A1, RPa, nucleus tractus solitarius, paraventricular nucleus, and CeA. C-Fos expression was dose-related, however, only in the RPa and CeA. LPS induced c-Fos in TH-positive neurons in the A1, but this was not dose-related. These results suggest that the dose-related effect of LPS on food intake (1) may originate in differential neuronal processing of LPS-induced signals in the RPa or CeA and (2) does not originate in CA neurons in the A1.

Primary carcinoid tumor of the ovary is an extremely rare neoplasm, accounting for less than 0.1 % of all ovarian neoplasms. We report a case of a 79-year-old woman with locally advanced ovarian ...carcinoid presenting as acute abdomen. At laparotomy, a large mass appeared in the pelvis, with maximum size of 18 cm, growing from the left ovary with infiltration of the left Fallopian tube and compression of the small bowel and the sigmoid tract. A bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed, and the tumor mass was completely removed. Post-operative treatments were not considered due to the absence of data in literature to support adjuvant treatments. Ten years after surgery the patient remains well without evidence of recurrence. Older age should not be considered an absolute contraindication for aggressive surgery, if this represents the best chance of cure. An aggressive cytoreductive surgery remains the best treatment for advanced or locally advanced primary ovarian carcinoid.
Quantitative information-flow analysis (QIF) is an emerging technique for establishing information-theoretic confidentiality properties. Automation of QIF is an important step towards ensuring its ...practical applicability, since manual reasoning about program security has been shown to be a tedious and expensive task. Existing automated techniques for QIF fall short of providing full coverage of all program executions, especially in the presence of unbounded loops and data structures, which are notoriously difficult to analyze automatically. In this paper we propose a blend of approximation and randomization techniques to bear on the challenge of sufficiently precise, yet efficient computation of quantitative information flow properties. Our approach relies on a sampling method to enumerate large or unbounded secret spaces, and applies both static and dynamic program analysis techniques to deliver necessary over- and under-approximations of information-theoretic characteristics.

The photoproduction of
mesons on LH
2
, C and Nb has been measured for incident photon energies from 900 to 1300MeV using the CB/TAPS detector at ELSA. The
lineshape does not show any significant ...difference between the LH
2
and the Nb targets. The experiment was motivated by transport calculations that predicted a sensitivity of the
lineshape to in-medium modifications near the production threshold on a free nucleon of
MeV. A comparison with recent calculations is given.
