ABSTRACT
We present results from applying the SNAD anomaly detection pipeline to the third public data release of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF DR3). The pipeline is composed of three stages: ...feature extraction, search of outliers with machine learning algorithms, and anomaly identification with followup by human experts. Our analysis concentrates in three ZTF fields, comprising more than 2.25 million objects. A set of four automatic learning algorithms was used to identify 277 outliers, which were subsequently scrutinized by an expert. From these, 188 (68 per cent) were found to be bogus light curves – including effects from the image subtraction pipeline as well as overlapping between a star and a known asteroid, 66 (24 per cent) were previously reported sources whereas 23 (8 per cent) correspond to non-catalogued objects, with the two latter cases of potential scientific interest (e.g. one spectroscopically confirmed RS Canum Venaticorum star, four supernovae candidates, one red dwarf flare). Moreover, using results from the expert analysis, we were able to identify a simple bi-dimensional relation that can be used to aid filtering potentially bogus light curves in future studies. We provide a complete list of objects with potential scientific application so they can be further scrutinised by the community. These results confirm the importance of combining automatic machine learning algorithms with domain knowledge in the construction of recommendation systems for astronomy. This survey is an extended version of the mini-course read by the author in November 2015 during the Chinese–Russian workshop on exponential sums and sumsets. This workshop was organized by Professor ...Chaohua Jia (Institute of Mathematics, Academia Sinica) and Professor Ke Gong (Henan University) at the Academy of Mathematics and System Science, CAS (Beijing). The author is warmly grateful to them for support and hospitality. The survey consists of the Introduction, three sections, and the Conclusion. The basic definitions and results concerning complete Kloosterman sums are given in the Introduction. A method for estimating incomplete Kloosterman sums modulo a growing power of a fixed prime is described in Section 1. This method is based on an idea of A.G. Postnikov, according to which the estimation of such sums reduces to estimating exponential sums with a polynomial in the exponent by applying I.M. Vinogradov’s mean value theorem. A.A. Karatsuba’s method for estimating incomplete sums to an arbitrary modulus is described in Section 2. This method is based on a fairly accurate estimate for the number of solutions of a symmetric congruence involving inverse residues to a given modulus. This estimate plays the same role in the problems under consideration as Vinogradov’s mean value theorem in estimating corresponding exponential sums. The method of J. Bourgain and M.Z. Garaev is described in Section 3. This method is based on a profound sum-product estimate and on an improvement of Karatsuba’s bound for the number of solutions of a symmetric congruence. The Conclusion contains a number of recent results concerning estimates of short Kloosterman sums without proofs.

In ankylosing spondylitis, the pathological metabolism of the bone tissue is regulated by various proteins; of these, Dkk-1 protein, an antagonist of the Wnt-signaling pathway, is of particular ...interest. We compared the methods of Dkk-1 detection in the blood serum of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (conventional ELISA and aptamer/antibody assay) and analyzed the relationship between Dkk-1 level and structural progression of ankylosing spondylitis and secondary osteoporosis. Dkk-1 levels in patients were significantly increased and depended on the stage of the disease, but not on the presence/absence of osteoporosis. Thus, Dkk-1 is a potential serum marker of progression of ankylosing spondylitis reflecting a tendency to structural progression of the disease before the appearance of radiographic changes. The results obtained by both methods practically coincided, which suggests good prospects for applying DNA aptamer-based test system.

The article reflects main problems and opinions of social workers about possibilities of improving medical social care of population and providing social medical services. This group of specialists ...is forced to implement significant amount of work that is not regulated by their official duties. The lack of necessary competencies does not allow social workers to provide medical social assistance to consumers of medical social services to sufficient extent. To ensure interaction between medical and social workers largely falls on shoulders of the latter ones. They have to undertake a number of medical functions (examination, temporary stop of bleeding, blood pressure measurement, etc.). It conceives appropriate to transfer some of functions of junior and paramedical staff to social workers. The study results can be applied as methodological basis of increasing accessibility of medical social care and provided social and medical services to various groups of population.
We present microphysical observations of cumulus clouds measured over the southwest peninsula of the UK during the COnvective Precipitation Experiment (COPE) in August 2013, which are framed into a ...wider context using ground-based and airborne radar measurements. Two lines of cumulus clouds formed in the early afternoon along convergence lines aligned with the peninsula. The lines became longer and broader during the afternoon due to new cell formation and stratiform regions forming downwind of the convective cells. Ice concentrations up to 350 L−1, well in excess of the expected ice nuclei (IN) concentrations, were measured in the mature stratiform regions, suggesting that secondary ice production was active. Detailed sampling focused on an isolated liquid cloud that glaciated as it matured to merge with a band of cloud downwind. In the initial cell, drizzle concentrations increased from ∼ 0.5 to ∼ 20 L−1 in around 20 min. Ice concentrations developed up to a few per litre, which is around the level expected of primary IN. The ice images were most consistent with freezing drizzle, rather than smaller cloud drops or interstitial IN forming the first ice. As new cells emerged in and around the cloud, ice concentrations up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than the predicted IN concentrations developed, and the cloud glaciated over a period of 12–15 min. Almost all of the first ice particles to be observed were frozen drops, while vapour-grown ice crystals were dominant in the latter stages. Our observations are consistent with the production of large numbers of small secondary ice crystals/fragments, by a mechanism such as Hallett–Mossop or droplets shattering upon freezing. Some of the small ice froze drizzle drops on contact, while others grew more slowly by vapour deposition. Graupel and columns were seen in cloud penetrations up to the −12 °C level, though many ice particles were mixed habit due to riming and growth by vapour deposition at multiple temperatures. Our observations demonstrate that the freezing of drizzle/raindrops is an important process that dominates the formation of large ice in the intermediate stages of cloud development. As these frozen drops were the first precipitation observed, interactions between the warm-rain and secondary ice production processes appear to be key to determining the timing and location of precipitation.
