The article deals with opera directing in Slovenia between the two wars, with the emphasis on opera performances of the National Theatre in Ljubljana. The author introduces a profile of an opera ...director in relation to theatre directing as well as some important European theatres and schools, and assesses the interactions between theatre and opera performances that were directed by some of the most notable stage directors of the Ljubljana Drama Theatre, such as Osip Šest, Bratko Kreft, and Ciril Debevec.

(b Eisendorf, Germany, Aug 15, 1865; d Maribor, Slovenia, June 20, 1938). German organ, harmonium, and piano builder active in Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, and Hungary. From 1878 to 1882 ...he studied in Rosenheim, Bavaria, with the organ builder Jakob Müller, for whom he then worked for three years. Later he travelled and worked with Mathias Burkard in Heidelberg, Gebrüder Mayer in Feldkirch, and finally with Anton Bechmann (1850–1932) in Schwarzach. In 1893, after receiving his master’s qualification he worked briefly for Ludwig Edenhofer in Regen; then he moved to Maribor and established his own workshop with two assistants. Brandl’s repairs and renovations of older organs in Styria earned him a good reputation, and after a few years he became one of the most important organ builders in the region.

He completed more than 100 organs, the later ...ones showing some Romantic influence. Their style suggests that Rumpel was a pupil of an unknown Viennese organ builder. His organs, distinguished by the high quality of their cases, typically have about 12 registers, but his last and largest one, for the abbey church of St Paul in Lavantthal, Austria (1859), has 25 registers. Transverse flute of Slovenia. It is made of plum heartwood, unpolished, in nine sizes from about 20 to 52 cm long, with the two longest flutes made in two parts. Žvegle are pitched at ...g”, f”, d♭”, c♯”, b’, a’, g’, f’ and e♭’ respectively and each encompasses two octaves. The cylindrical tube widens at each end; the upper end is closed. The highest of the six equidistant fingerholes lies at the centre of the tube’s length. Žvegle are played alone or in pairs or trios of the same size, and with the trstenke (panpipe) or frajtonerca (accordion). From the 18th century to the second half of the 20th, žvegle were made principally by the Merc family from Haloze, in Slovenian Styria. The paintings The concert on the Oriental court (1786) and The lute concert (ca. 1786) by Johann Josef Karl Henrici (1737-1823) - both at the Akademija za Glasbo in Ljubljana - depict musical life in ...European aristocratic society of the second half of the eighteenth century and in their details are tuned up on exoticism. The first painting presents the allegory of music, while the second can be understood as the allegory of hearing or the allegory of five senses. In the Dornava mansion - which used to be owned by Austrian aristocrats and today is considered to be one of the most exceptional mansions in Slovenia - on the painted wall canvas are preserved Chinoiseries from about 1750, which belong among the most distinguished European examples of this genre. Represented scenes are produced after seventeenth-century fantastic and grotesque engravings (one source was the series Balli di Sfesania by Jacques Callot from ca. 1622), in the details comparable to Chinoiseries produced for the European market of the second half of the eighteenth century. Among motifs of the Italian comedia dell'arte and scenes of imaginary life in China, are depicted two figures, one playing a stylized lyre and the other a bowed string instrument. The instruments seem to be European, but their - fantastic shapes make it obvious that their symbolism overcomes strict musical meaning.
