Background: Slovenia is classified as being iodine-deficient. We recently found that Slovenian adolescents are iodine-sufficient (median urinary iodine concentration of the population 140 µg/l) and ...the prevalence of goiter is low (0.9%). The objective of this study was to evaluate iodine intake, the prevalence of marginal, low and excessive intake (<50, 50–100 and ≧300 µg/day), as well as the main sources of iodine in the diet of Slovenian adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 2,581 adolescents (1,415 girls, 1,166 boys, mean age ± SD 15.6 ± 0.5 years) representing 10% of 15-year-old Slovenian adolescents. Iodine intake was determined using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in the whole population studied (n = 2,485) and weighted 3-day dietary protocols (3DPs) in a subgroup of participants (n = 191). Results: Median iodine intake determined from FFQ was 155.8 µg/day. There was no significant difference between genders. Marginal, low and excessive iodine intake was observed in 3.3, 20.3 and 11.3% of the adolescents, respectively. The major food sources of dietary iodine included table salt (39 % of the mean daily iodine intake), beverages (22%) and milk/milk products (19%). Conclusions: Dietary iodine intake in Slovenian adolescents is adequate, illustrating the effective salt iodization program.
Four SNPs (E10SNP24, E10SNP158, E12SNP, E33SNP) in the Tg gene are suspected to be involved in the development of autoimmune thyroid diseases. The aim of the study was to determine whether these ...variants play a role in the development of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in young subjects with type 1 diabetes, in whom autoimmune thyroid diseases are significantly more common than in the general population.
Seventy-six subjects with type 1 diabetes and Hashimoto's thyroiditis and 110 subjects with only type 1 diabetes were studied. Hashimoto's thyroiditis was determined according to the clinical, biochemical and ultrasonographic criteria. SNPs were determined by the TaqMan SNP method.
In young subjects with type 1 diabetes, no association between any of the tested SNPs or their combinations and Hashimoto's thyroiditis was found.
This is the first study to investigate the association of SNPs located inside the coding region of the Tg gene with the development of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in subjects with type 1 diabetes. The lack of an association is in concordance with a study where marker Tgms2, located inside intron 27, was not associated with joint susceptibility for autoimmune thyroid disease and type 1 diabetes.
Uvod. Razvojni zaostanek in displastične znake ugotavljamo pri 1-3% otrok. Molekularne citogenetske tehnike z visoko ločljivostjo (CGH- in SNP-mikromreže) so v zadnjih letih postale ključna preiskava ...v rutinski klinični diagnostiki pri preiskovancih z razvojnim zaostankom, displastičnimi znaki in drugimi nepravilnostmi. Metode in rezultati. V prispevku želimo prikazati klinične prednosti molekularnega citogenetskega pristopa v diagnostičnem postopku dveh otrok z razvojnim zaostankom, displastičnimi znaki in drugimi nepravilnostmi. Potrditev kromosomske preureditve z metodo FISH je potrebna za opredelitev točne kromosomske lokacije in mehanizma nastanka kromosomske nepravilnosti. Zaključek. V prispevku predstavljamo dva tipa kromosomskih nepravilnosti, ki smo jih ugotovili in potrdili z različnimi molekularnimi metodami. Poudariti želimo pomen potrjevanja in analize pri starših za opredelitev izvora nastanka kromosomske preureditve. Rezultati genetske preiskave so ključni pri genetskem svetovanju prizadetim posameznikom in njihovim družinam.
Neuromuscular electric stimulation is widely used for muscle strengthening in clinical practice and for preventative purposes. However, there are few reports on the effects of electric stimulation on ...the immune response of the organism, and even those mainly describe the changes observed immediately after the electrotherapeutic procedures. The objective of our study was to examine the possible immunological consequences of moderate low-frequency transcutaneous neuromuscular electric stimulation for quadriceps muscle strengthening in healthy individuals.
The study included 10 healthy volunteers (5 males, 5 females, mean age 37.5 years). At the beginning and after a two-week electric stimulation program, muscle strength was measured and peripheral blood was collected to analyse white blood cells by flow cytometry for the expression of cell surface antigens (CD3, CD19, CD4, CD8, CD4/8, DR/3, NK, Th reg, CD25 + CD3+, CD25 + CD4+, CD25 + CD8+, CD69 + CD3+, CD69 + CD4+, CD69 + CD8+) and phagocytosis/oxidative killing function.
Muscle strength slightly increased after the program on the dominant and the nondominant side. No statistically or clinically significant difference was found in any of the measured blood and immune cells parameters as well as phagocytosis and oxidative burst function of neutrophil granulocytes and monocytes one day after the program.
The program of transcutaneous low-frequency electric stimulation slightly strengthened the quadriceps femoris muscle while producing no changes in measured immunological parameters. Hence, therapeutic low-frequency electric stimulation appears not to be affecting the immune response of healthy persons.
We monitored trends of severe COVID-19 morbidity in Slovenia during weeks 13 to 37 2021. National weekly rates of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) cases testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 at ...admission in all hospitals varied between 0.2 and 16.3 cases per 100,000 population. Of those without previous COVID-19 diagnosis, SARI COVID-19 admission rates ranged between 0.3 and 17.5 per 100,000 unvaccinated, and 0.0 and 7.3 per 100,000 fully vaccinated individuals. National SARI COVID-19 surveillance is essential in informing COVID-19 response.
