This study uses complexity theory to explain and better understand the causal patterns of factors stimulating online shopping behavior in personalized e-commerce environments. To test its propositions, it employs fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on a sample of 582 experienced online shoppers. Findings indicate nine configurations of cognitive and affective perceptions that explain high intention to purchase. This study, contributes to the literature 1) by offering new insights into the relation among the predictors of online shopping behavior and 2) advancing the theoretical ground of how customers' cognitive and affective perceptions combine to better explain high purchase intentions. The findings support the need for online shopping environments to be more interactive in order to target customers' cognitive and affective perceptions, and increase their intention to purchase.
This research proposes a set of interaction design principles for the development of mobile augmented reality (MAR) applications. The design recommendations adopt a user-centered perspective and, ...thus, they focus on the necessary actions to ensure high-quality MAR user experiences. To formulate our propositions we relied on theoretical grounding and an evaluation of eight MAR applications that provide published records of their design properties. The design principles have then been applied to guide the development of a MAR travel application. We performed a field study with 33 tourists in order to elicit whether our design choices effectively lead to enhanced satisfaction and overall user experience. Results suggest that the proposed principles contribute to ensuring high usability and performance of the MAR application as well as evoking positive feelings during user and system interactions. Our prescriptions may be employed either as a guide during the initial stages of the design process (ex-ante usage) or as a benchmark to assess the performance (ex-post usage) of MAR applications.
This study explores the online information-seeking behaviour of travellers aspiring to accumulate travel-related information during their vacation planning. A theoretical model comprising information ...needs, online information sources, information barriers and personal characteristics is proposed to explain high degrees of information satisfaction in the online information space. Our theoretical propositions are validated through a survey (N=764). The results of a configurational analysis, based on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, pinpointed 13 behavioural paths that equally explain travellers’ online information satisfaction. The paper includes a critical discussion on the theoretical and practical implication of the findings.

The present study aims to examine purchase behavior in personalized online shopping by employing complexity theory, based on customers’ online shopping experience and online shopping motivations. To address its objectives, a conceptual model is proposed along with research propositions. The research propositions are validated through a survey on 401 customers’ experience with online shopping, by using the data analysis tool fsQCA (fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis). The results, indicate nine configurations of online shopping experience and online shopping motivations that lead to high purchase intentions. This study takes a step further the literature of online shopping and the theoretical ground of how customers’ online shopping experience combines with their online shopping motivations in order to predict and explain increased intention to purchase. The findings offer implications for both researchers and online retailers, regarding the development of new theories in personalized e-commerce and the provision of personalized services.
Purpose
In the complex ecosystem of mobile applications multiple factors have been used to explain users’ behavior, without though focusing on how different combinations of variables may affect user ...behavior. The purpose of this paper is to show how price value, game content quality, positive and negative emotions, gender and gameplay time interact with each other to predict high intention to download mobile games.
Design/methodology/approach
Building on complexity theory, the authors present a conceptual model followed by research propositions. The propositions are empirically validated through configurational analysis, employing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on 531 active users of mobile games.
Findings
Findings identify ten solutions that explain high intention to download mobile games. Alternative paths are identified depending on the gender and the time users spend playing mobiles games. The authors highlight the role of price value and game content quality, as well as that of positive emotions, which are always core factors when present.
Originality/value
To identify complex interactions among the variables of interest, fsQCA is employed, differentiating from traditional studies using variance-based methods, leading to multiple solutions explaining the same outcome. None of the variables explains the intention to download on its own, but only when they combine with each other. The authors extend existing knowledge on how price value, game content quality, emotions, gender and gameplay time combine to lead to high intention to download mobile games; and present a methodology for how to bridge complexity theory with fsQCA, improving our understanding of intention to adopt mobile applications.
This research develops and tests a theoretical model of customer persuasion in personalized online shopping, building on information processing theory, and addressing cognitive and affective stages ...of the persuasion process. Data from 582 experienced online customers were used to validate the proposed model through structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis. Results show that quality of personalization, message quality, and benefits of the personalized recommendations are important in the persuasion process. Positive emotions increase the effect of persuasion on purchase intentions, contrary to negative emotions. The study extends online personalization theory, offers an in‐depth analysis of the persuasion process in online shopping, and provides valuable recommendations for personalized online marketing.
Research on mobile commerce has attracted the interest of e-commerce scholars ever since mobile and portable devices became a widespread and effective means of commercial transactions and business ...practices. In the present editorial of this special issue of IJEC, we first revisit the past of m-commerce practice and research through an analysis of m-commerce-related publications and prevailing business models from 2000 to 2011. The analysis points to the increasingly topical and maturing status of the field, as well as to a gradual move from engineering-driven to socioeconomic-focused research. We then move to examine the field's present, by examining the submissions to this special issue and the five accepted papers that appear herein. This discussion provides a glimpse into the questions on m-commerce researchers' minds today; however, it also allows us to investigate what lies ahead in the future of m-commerce research as we move toward the more social-minded, hyperconnected world of tomorrow's social commerce (s-commerce).

Background
Although doctors increasingly engage in online information seeking to complement their medical practice, little is known regarding what online information sources are used and how ...effective they are.
Objective
Grounded on self‐determination and needs theory, this study posits that doctors tend to use online information sources to fulfil their information requirements in three pre‐defined areas: patient care, knowledge development and research activities. Fulfilling these information needs is argued to improve doctors' perceived medical practice competence.
Methods
Performing PLS‐SEM analysis on primary survey data from 303 medical doctors practicing in four major Greek hospitals, a conceptual model is empirically tested.
Results
Using authoritative online information sources was found to fulfil all types of information needs. Contrarily, using non‐authoritative information sources had no significant effect. Satisfying information requirements relating to patient care and research activities enhanced doctors' perceptions about their medical practice competence. In contrast, meeting knowledge development information needs had the opposite result.
Discussion
Consistent with past studies, outcomes indicate that doctors tend to use non‐authoritative online information sources; yet their use was found to have no significant value in fulfilling their information requirements.
Conclusions
Authoritative online information sources are found to improve perceived medical practice competence by satisfying doctors' diverse information requirements.
This research explores the satisfaction gap between the expectations of medical doctors when using the Internet to search for health-related information, and the confirmations they receive following ...the use of specific information sources to meet their information needs. We executed a quantitative study on 303 medical doctors to capture their online information-seeking behavior. Results suggest that authoritative online information sources are strongly related with the derived satisfaction of medical doctors' online information needs, whilst expectation fulfillment is not related with usage of non-authoritative sources. Nevertheless, doctors' perceptions regarding the information quality of online sources, and discerning personal constraints regarding Internet use, moderate the relationship between online source usage and the effectuation of their expectations.
