Ivan Pavao II stavio je u srazmjer novost evangelizacije sa kvalitetama žara, metode i izraza. Evangelizacija kao svjedočanstvo susreta s osobom uskrslog Gospodina zahtjeva rast u tim kvalitetama i ...uklanjanje prepreka susretu Krista, primarnog evangelizatora, sa svakom ljudskom osobom, rezultirajući nutarnjom preobrazbom čovječanstva u novo stvorenje. Ova ljubav Kristova susreće čovjeka putem vlastitih transcendentalnih svojstava nadilazeći ljudsku nepažnju, neznanje i otpor, blago i s poštovanjem, kroz međuosobni »Ja-Ti« dijalog. Metodološki poredak kojim Hans Urs von Balthasar preuređuje transcendentale Bitka kao Ljubavi – ljepotu, dobrotu, istinu – nudi obećavajući okvir i sadržaj za tumačenje kvaliteta nove evangelizacije i onih koji teže k tome da je vrše. U susretu sa ljepotom Gospodina (njegovom Slavom) ljudska osoba biva njome ugrabljena, što rezultira religioznim obraćenjem (demonstratio religiosa). Takvoj osobi zapaljen je žar, sa sve snažnijom čežnjom odaziva na poziv »dođi i vidi« i »dođi i slijedi me«. Tako počinje središnja faza, drama nasljedovanja Krista; susrećući Dobroga, ožareni evangelizator nalazi i očituje metodu: postojanje igranjem uloge sporedne onoj Kristove kenotičke ljubavi na pozornici svijeta, prolazeći tako kroz proces moralnog obraćenja (demonstratio christiana) i bivajući tako i sam sve više dobar. Završna faza poslušnosti i samo-ispražnjenja (u kontinuitetu sa ugrabljenošću i dramom), neodvojiva od života u molitvi, sastoji se od promišljanja i izražavanja življene istine putem svetačke egzistencije, jedinstvene osobne forme istinskog ljubitelja Mudrosti, kojemu je »smrt dobitak«. Na ovaj način, svijetu koji traži svjedoke više od učitelja ponuđeni su izdašni razlozi za ulazak u egzistencijalni susret s Bitkom kao Ljubavi u procesu intelektualnog obraćenja (demonstratio catholica) Kristu kao onome koji je universale concretum.
John Paul II has put the newness of evangelization into proportion with qualities of ardor, method, and expression. Evangelization as a witness of encountering the risen Lord requires growth in ...quality and removal of obstacles for the encounter of Christ, the prime-evangelist, with every human person, resulting in the transformation of humanity within, into a new being. This love of Christ encounters man through its own transcendental properties by overriding man’s inattentiveness, ignorance, and adversity, with all gentleness and respect, within an interpersonal »I -Thou« dialogue. The methodological order by which Hans Urs von Balthasar realigns the transcendentals of Being as Love – beauty, goodness, truth – offers a promising frame and substance for the interpretation of the qualities of New evangelization and those who aspire to practice it. In the encounter with the beauty of the Lord (his Glory) the human person becomes enraptured by it, resulting in religious conversion (demonstratio religiosa). Such a person has her ardor ignited, with an ever stronger desire of responding to the call to »come and see« and »come and follow«. Hence commences the central phase, the drama of imitating Christ; by meeting the one that is Good, the ardent evangelist finds and exhibits a method: existing by playing a supporting role to Christ’s kenotic love on the stage of the world, thus going through the process of moral conversion (demonstration Christiana) and becoming ever better himself. The final phase of obedience and self-emptying (in continuity with the rapture and the drama), inseparable from a life of prayer, consists in reflecting and expressing the truth lived in a saintly existence, the unique personal form of a true lover of Wisdom, for whom »to die is to gain«. In such a manner, the world which seeks witnesses more than teachers is offered abundant reason to enter an existential encounter with Being as Love in the process of intellectual conversion (demonstration Catholica) towards Christ as universal concretum.

Agricultural waste, which is produced in large quantities annually, can be a threat to the environment. Biochar (BC) production represents a potential solution for reducing the amount of grapevine ...pruning residues and, accordingly, the impact on the environment and climate change. Biochar produced by the process of pyrolysis from grapevine pruning residues was investigated and characterized to be applied as an adsorbent of polyphenolic compounds with the aim of using the waste from viticultural production to obtain a quality product with adsorption and recovery potential. Standards of caffeic acid (CA), gallic acid (GA), and oleuropein (OLP) were used as polyphenolic representatives. The obtained data were fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models to describe the adsorption process. The best K
(0.39) and R
(0.9934) were found for OLP using the Langmuir model. Furthermore, the adsorption dynamics and recovery potential of BC were investigated using an adapted BC column and performed on an HPLC instrument. The adsorption dynamics of biochar resulted in the adsorption of 5.73 mg CA g
of BC, 3.90 mg GA g
of BC, and 3.17 mg OLP g
of BC in a 24 h contact. The online solid phase extraction of the compounds performed on an HPLC instrument yielded a recovery of 41.5 ± 1.71% for CA, 61.8 ± 1.16% for GA, and 91.4 ± 2.10% for OLP. The investigated biochar has shown a higher affinity for low-polar compound adsorption and, consequently, a higher polar compound recovery suggesting its potential as an efficient polyphenolic compound adsorbent.
Twenty common genetic variants have been associated with risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) in genome wide association studies to date. Since large differences between populations exist, ...generalisability of findings to any specific population needs to be confirmed.
The aim of this study was to perform an association study between risk variants: rs10795668, rs16892766, rs3802842 and rs4939827 and CRC risk in Croatian population.
An association study was performed on 320 colorectal cancer cases and 594 controls recruited in Croatia. We genotyped four variants previously associated with CRC: rs10795668, rs16892766, rs3802842 and rs4939827.
SMAD7 variant rs4939827 (18q21.1) was significantly associated with CRC risk in Croatian population. C allele was associated with a decreased risk, odds ratio (OR): 0.70 (95% CI: 0.57-0.85, P=3.5E-04). Compared to TT homozygotes, risk was reduced by 34% in heterozygotes (OR=0.66, 95% CI: 0.47-0.92) and by 52% in CC homozygotes (OR=0.48, 95% CI: 0.33-0.72).
Our results show association of rs4939827 with colorectal cancer risk in Croatian population. The higher strength of the association in comparison to other studies suggests population-specific environmental or genetic factors may be modifying the association. More studies are needed to further describe role of rs4939827 in CRC. Likely reason for failure of replication for other 3 loci is inadequate study power.
Onion peels (OP) are rich in bioactive compounds with a plethora of benefits for human health, but this valuable material is often wasted and underutilized due to its inedibility. Likewise, grapevine ...pruning residues are commonly treated as agricultural waste, but biochar (BC) obtained from this material has favorable characteristics as an adsorbent. This study investigated the potential of BC in removal of targeted polyphenolic compounds from OP extracts. The OP extracts were obtained adhering to green chemistry principles using deionized water amplified by three methods: maceration (MAC), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). The extraction efficiency on the polyphenolic profile and antioxidant capacity was investigated with different extraction temperatures and solid-to-liquid (s/l) ratios. For further analysis, UAE at 90 °C with an s/l ratio of 1:100 was used due to higher polyphenolic compound yield. The BC adsorption capacity of individual polyphenols was fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Quercetin-3,4′-diglucoside obtained the highest R2 coefficient in both models, and the highest qmax value. The optimum conditions in the dosage experiment suggested an amount of 0.5 g of BC using 3 g/L extracts. The studied BC showed a high affinity for targeted phytochemicals from OP extracts, indicating its potential to be applied for the green adsorption of valuable polyphenolic compounds.
Given today's increasingly intensive agriculture, one key problem area considers the valorization and reuse of wastes from food and agricultural production with minimal impact on the environment. Due ...to its physicochemical characteristics, biochar (BC) derived from grapevine pruning residue has shown considerable potential for use as an adsorbent. High-value phytochemicals found in abundance in the olive leaf (OL) can be employed in many different industrial sectors. The potential application of BC in the removal of specific polyphenolic components from OL extracts has been investigated in the present study. Water, as the most available and greenest of solvents, was investigated as to its use in the extraction of polyphenols, which was carried out by comparing maceration, ultrasound-assisted extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction, considering different temperatures and solid-to-liquid (s/l) ratios. The BC adsorption capacity of selected polyphenols was fitted with both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The Freundlich model fitted better relative to OL polyphenols adsorption. Oleuropein was the most abundant compound identified in the extracts, obtaining the highest K
value (20.4 (mg/g) × (L/g)
) and R
coefficient (0.9715) in the adsorption on the biochar's surface. The optimum conditions in the dosage experiment suggest the use of 0.5 g of BC using 3 g/L extracts, with an exception for oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, for which the highest biochar dose (2.5 g) performed better. Considering the compounds' concentrations and the BC dose, BC from grapevine pruning residues demonstrated a potential use in the uptake of specific polyphenols from olive leaves, making it a promising adsorbent for such applications.
To estimate the incidence and mortality trends of gastric and colorectal cancers in Croatia between 1988 and 2008.
Incidence data for the period 1988-2008 were obtained from the Croatian National ...Cancer Registry. The number of deaths from gastric and colorectal cancers were obtained from the World Health Organization mortality database. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to describe changes in trends by sex.
Gastric cancer incidence rates declined steadily during the study period, with estimated annual percent change (EAPC) of -3.2% for men and -2.8% for women. Mortality rates in men decreased, with EAPC of -5.0% from 1988-1995 and -2.5% from 1995-2008. Mortality rates in women decreased, with EAPC of -3.2% throughout the study period. For colorectal cancer in men, joinpoint analysis revealed increasing trends of both incidence (EAPC 2.9%) and mortality (EAPC 2.1%). In women, the increase in incidence was not significant, but mortality rates in the last 15 years showed a significant increase (EAPC 1.1%).
The incidence and mortality trends of gastric cancer in Croatia are similar to other European countries, while the still increasing colorectal cancer mortality calls for more efficient prevention and treatment.
The aim of this research was to determine the possible differences in degrees of depression, somatization and anxiety between the acute and chronic female patients with temporomandibular disorders ...(TMD), and whether these differences exist in healthy female patients. Ninety female patients were involved in this research; 60 of them were TMD patients of the Dental Polyclinic, while other 30 females came for a routine recall visit and had no problem related to TMD. Patients were aged 22 to 67 years, the average age being 38.5 +/- 12 years. All patients were asked to fill in the RDC/TMD protocol and three psychological tests (Emotions Profile Index, Somatization Scale and life Events Scale). Following the analysis of the RDC/TMD protocol and psychological tests, it was determined that the chronic female patients had higher depression and somatization scores in comparison with the acute patients (p < 0.01); the acute patients self-perceive higher levels of anxiety in relation to the control group; furthermore, the patients reporting higher levels of depression were more inclined to somatization and had experienced a greater number of stress events in the past six months. It is beyond doubt that patients suffering from the TMD's exhibit higher levels of depression, somatization and anxiety compared to the healthy ones, which proves that physiological factors may play a predisposing role in combination with reduced level of body tolerance to pain, and a decreased tolerance to stress.
