We present the time-resolved photometry of V1494 Aql (Nova Aql 1999 No. 2) between 2001 November and 2003 June. The object is confirmed to be an eclipsing nova with a period of 0.1346138(2) d. The ...eclipses were present in all observed epochs. The orbital light curve shows a rather unusual profile, consisting of a bump-like feature at phase 0.6–0.7 and a dip-like feature at phase 0.2–0.4. These features were probably persistently present in all available observations between 2001 and 2003. A period analysis outside of the eclipses has confirmed that these variations have a period common to the orbital period, and are unlikely to be interpreted as superhumps. We suspect that the structure (probably in the accretion disk) fixed in the binary rotational frame is somehow responsible for this feature.
We photometrically observed a 2003 June superoutburst of GO Gom. The mean superhump period was 0.063059(13) d. The resultant data revealed that (1) the obtained light curve contained a precursor, (2) ...a plateau stage of the object lasted for 8 days, which is remarkably shorter than that of ordinary SU UMa-type dwarf novae, and (3) the amplitude of the superoutburst was less than 5 mag, which is unpredictably small when taking into account the fact that the supercycle of GO Com is about 2800 days. In order to explain these anomalies, a mass-elimination process from the accretion disk, such as evaporation, may play an important role.
We report on the evolution of superhumps and late superhumps in an ultrashort period dwarf nova, 1RXS J232953.9

062814, during the superoutburst in 2001 November. Ordinary superhumps were ...observed throughout a plateau phase, a rapid fading phase, and a rebrightening phase. During the plateau phase, the superhump period increased with time at a large rate of
$P_\mathrm{dot} = 1.19 \pm 0.24 \times 10^{-4}$
. In conjunction with the rebrightening phenomenon, these characteristics indicate that an accretion disk expanded further outward from the
$3:1$
resonance radius, which caused a large amount of left over matter at the outer disk, even after the superoutburst. In the post-outburst phase, we detected late superhumps superimposed on dominant double-peak modulations. Late superhumps were observed at least for 10 d without a significant period change. We detected the first normal outburst of this object on 2001 December 26. The interval between the superoutburst and this normal one is 53 d. This short recurrence time supports a high mass-transfer rate in this system. Concerning the evolutionary status of 1RXS J232953.9

062814, we propose that it is a progenitor of AM CVn stars on the evolutionary course of the cataclysmic variable channel in which systems have a secondary star with a hydrogen-exhausted core.
We revealed that the dwarf nova 1RXS J232953.9+062814 is an SU UMa-type system with a superhump period of
$ 66.774\pm 0.010 \,\mathrm{min}$
. The short period strongly indicates that the orbital ...period of this object is below the period minimum of cataclysmic variables. The superhump period is
$ 4.04\pm 0.02$
% longer than the photometric period during quiescence (
$ 64.184\pm 0.003 \,\mathrm{min}$
), which is probably associated with the orbital period. Although the standard evolutionary scenario of cataclysmic variables predicts lower mass-transfer rates in systems with shorter orbital periods, we found firm evidence of a relatively high mass-transfer rate from its large proper motion and bright apparent magnitude. Its proximity indicates that we have overlooked a number of objects in this new class. With the analogous system of V485 Cen, these objects establish the first subpopulation in hydrogen-rich cataclysmic variables below the period minimum.
Context. Over the past few years, on several occasions, large, continuous rotations of the electric vector position angle (EVPA) of linearly polarized optical emission from blazars have been ...reported. These events are often coincident with high energy gamma-ray flares and they have attracted considerable attention, since they could allow us to probe the magnetic field structure in the gamma-ray emitting region of the jet. The flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 is one of the most prominent examples showing this behaviour. Aims. Our goal is to study the observed EVPA rotations and to distinguish between a stochastic and a deterministic origin of the polarization variability. Methods. We have combined multiple data sets of R-band photometry and optical polarimetry measurements of 3C 279, yielding exceptionally well-sampled flux density and polarization curves that cover a period of 2008-2012. Several large EVPA rotations are identified in the data. We introduce a quantitative measure for the EVPA curve smoothness, which is then used to test a set of simple random walk polarization variability models against the data. Results. 3C 279 shows different polarization variation characteristics during an optical low-flux state and a flaring state. The polarization variation during the flaring state, especially the smooth similar to 360 degrees rotation of the EVPA in mid-2011, is not consistent with the tested stochastic processes. Conclusions. We conclude that, during the two different optical flux states, two different processes govern polarization variation, which is possibly a stochastic process during the low-brightness state and a deterministic process during the flaring activity.
We present an analysis of photometric observations of the eclipsing novalike variable DW UMa made by the CBA consortium between 1999 and 2015. Analysis of 372 new and 260 previously published eclipse ...timings reveals a 13.6 year period or quasi-period in the times of minimum light. The seasonal light curves show a complex spectrum of periodic signals: both positive and negative superhumps, likely arising from a prograde apsidal precession and a retrograde nodal precession of the accretion disc. These signals appear most prominently and famously as sidebands of the orbital frequency but the precession frequencies themselves, at 0.40 and 0.22 cycles per day, are also seen directly in the power spectrum. The superhumps are sometimes seen together and sometimes separately. The depth, width and skew of eclipses are all modulated in phase with both nodal and apsidal precession of the tilted and eccentric accretion disc. The superhumps, or more correctly the precessional motions which produce them, may be essential to understanding the mysterious SW Sextantis syndrome. Disc wobble and eccentricity can both produce Doppler signatures inconsistent with the true dynamical motions in the binary, and disc wobble might boost the mass-transfer rate by enabling the hot white dwarf to directly irradiate the secondary star.
We present time-resolved photometry of a cataclysmic variable discovered in the Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric Halpha Survey of the northern galactic plane, IPHAS J062746.41+014811.3 and classify ...the system as the fourth deeply eclipsing intermediate polar known with an orbital period of Porb=8.16 h, and spin period of Pspin=2210 s. The system shows mild variations of its brightness, that appear to be accompanied by a change in the amplitude of the spin modulation at optical wavelengths, and a change in the morphology of the eclipse profile. The inferred magnetic moment of the white dwarf is mu_wd = 6-7 x 10^33 Gcm^3, and in this case IPHAS J0627 will either evolve into a short-period EX Hya-like intermediate polar with a large Pspin\Porb ratio, or, perhaps more likely, into a synchronised polar. Swift observations show that the system is an ultraviolet and X-ray source, with a hard X-ray spectrum that is consistent with those seen in other intermediate polars. The ultraviolet light curve shows orbital modulation and an eclipse, while the low signal-to-noise ratio X-ray light curve does not show a significant modulation on the spin period. The measured X-ray flux is about an order of magnitude lower than would be expected from scaling by the optical fluxes of well-known X-ray selected intermediate polars.

We present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the dwarf nova SBSS 1108+574, obtained during the 2012 outburst. Its quiescent spectrum is unusually rich in helium, showing broad, ...double-peaked emission lines from the accretion disc. We measure a line flux ratio HeI 5875/Halpha = 0.81 +/- 0.04, a much higher ratio than typically observed in cataclysmic variables (CVs). The outburst spectrum shows hydrogen and helium in absorption, with weak emission of Halpha and HeI 6678, as well as strong HeII emission. From our photometry, we find the superhump period to be 56.34 +/- 0.18 minutes, in agreement with the previously published result. The spectroscopic period, derived from the radial velocities of the emission lines, is found to be 55.3 +/- 0.8 minutes, consistent with a previously identified photometric orbital period, and significantly below the normal CV period minimum. This indicates that the donor in SBSS 1108+574 is highly evolved. The superhump excess derived from our photometry implies a mass ratio of q = 0.086 +/- 0.014. Our spectroscopy reveals a grazing eclipse of the large outbursting disc. As the disc is significantly larger during outburst, it is unlikely that an eclipse will be detectable in quiescence. The relatively high accretion rate implied by the detection of outbursts, together with the large mass ratio, suggests that SBSS 1108+574 is still evolving towards its period minimum.
