This study assessed the role of expert testimony and just world beliefs (JWB) in decisions made in a sexually violent predator (SVP) trial. Three participant samples (student, juror, and community; ...total N = 534) completed items measuring JWB and watched a 1‐hour videotaped trial simulation that featured a psychologist offering different types of expert testimony in a SVP hearing. After the opening statements and at the end of the trial presentation, participants made commitment decisions and rated their confidence in their decision. They also rated the expert testimony on influence, credibility, scientificness, and confidence. Results indicated that favorable attitudes toward the expert mediated the relationship between JWB and commitment decisions. This relationship did not differ depending on type of expert testimony (clinical vs. actuarial) proffered. The legal and policy implications of the findings are discussed.
Objective To determine the effect of intra‐operative monitoring of bladder neck elevation on cure rate and post‐operative complications in patients undergoing colposuspension.
Design Prospective, ...observational study.
Setting Urogynaecology units, university hospitals.
Population Ninety women operated on for genuine stress urinary incontinence.
Methods The topography of the bladder neck and proximal urethra was assessed with pre‐, intra‐ and post‐operative introital ultrasound. These measurements were repeated during follow up for up to 48 months after surgery. Burch colposuspension of the bladder neck was performed under intra‐operative introital ultrasound control, with reference to the patients' individual pre‐operative ultrasound, to achieve a vertical height correction of 1–10 mm.
Main outcome measures Mid‐term surgical outcome and post‐operative complications.
Results Ninety patients underwent colposuspension and 50 (56%) completed 48 months of follow up; 85 women (94%) were objectively continent at 12‐month follow up and 42 of 50 (82%) at 48‐month follow up. Surgical elevation of the bladder neck resulted in a median intra‐operative elevation of 9 mm (7 mm at 48 months). All post‐operative measurements demonstrated a significant decrease in linear dorsocaudal movement of the bladder neck during straining (P < 0.001). Funnelling and hypermobility were still decreased 48 months after incontinence surgery (P <0.001). Voiding difficulty and urgency were uncommon and associated with evidence of funnelling and hypermobility.
Conclusion Intra‐operative introital ultrasound standardises Burch colposuspension and thus might help to avoid overelevation and associated post‐operative complications such as voiding difficulties and de novo urge incontinence without compromising the success of the operation.

In this thesis, I present work spanning a variety of topics relating ...to neutron star lowmass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and utilize spectral information from X-ray observations to further our understanding of these sources. First, I give an overview of important X- ray astrophysics relevant to the work I present in subsequent chapters, as well as information about the X-ray observatories from which I obtained my data. In the next three chapters, I consider spectra-both high- and low-resolution--of accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars, a unique and relatively new class of objects. In addition to analysis of the pulsar XTE J1814-338, I compare a broader sample of pulsars with a sample of atoll sources in order to better understand why the latter class do not contain persistently pulsating neutron stars. In particular, I test the hypothesis that pulsations in the atoll sources are suppressed by a high-optical- depth scattering region. Using X-ray color-color diagrams to define a selection criterion based on spectral state, I analyze Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) spectra from all the sources, and use a Comptonization model to obtain measurements of their optical depths. I then discuss efforts to spatially resolve X-ray jets from the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 and the Z source XTE J1701-462. Each was observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory to produce a high-spatial-resolution image. This work was motivated in part by my analysis of XTE J1814-338, which found an apparent excess of infrared flux which could be attributed to jet emission. Next, I discuss the measured temperatures of thermonuclear X-ray bursts. The detection of line features in these bursts, and hence from the surfaces of neutron stars, has been an important goal for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. A measurement of the wavelengths of identified line features would yield a measurement of the neutron star's gravitational redshift, which would help constrain current models for the neutron star equation of state.
(cont.) Although such a measurement has been made for one source, other searches have not been able to repeat this measurement. I consider the effects of burst temperature on the formation of discrete spectral features, using a large sample of bursts observed by the RXTE PCA. Finally, I present analysis of high-resolution Chandra HETG spectra of a sample of Galactic LMXBs. High-resolution spectra are able to resolve line features, such as the prominent Ne and O emission lines in the ultracompact X-ray binary 4U 1626-67. They also allow for more precise measurements of photoelectric absorption edges, which can otherwise hinder the determination of continuum spectral components, particularly in the lower-energy spectral regions.

We present a study of anatomical and functional abnormalities of central nervous system (CNS) from patients with autistic disorder (AD); magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and single photon emission ...computed tomography (SPECT) were used for the investigation. The population studied was composed of 24 patients, 15 (62.5%) males and 9 (17.5%) females, mean age 9 years. MRI was performed in all patients and SPECT was performed in 19 patients; 75% (n=18) of patients had anatomical abnormalities and all patients that realized SPECT had functional abnormalities. Anatomical abnormalities were preferentially noted in corpus callosum (25%), septum pellucidum (15.63%), cerebral ventricles (12.55%), cerebellum (9.38%), temporal lobes (6.25%), occipital lobes (6.25%) and hippocampus (6.25%). Functional abnormalities predominated in frontal lobes (53.13%), temporal lobes (28.13%), parietal lobes (15.63%) and basal ganglia (3.13%). However, anatomical and functional abnormalities of CNS are not priorities for diagnosis, which should have always clinical validation.
Apresentamos um estudo das alterações anátomo-funcionais do sistema nervoso central (SNC) de pacientes com transtorno autístico (TA), através da ressonância nuclear magnética (RNM) e da tomografia ...computadorizada por emissão de fóton único (SPECT). Foram estudados 24 pacientes, sendo 15 (62,5%) do sexo masculino e 9 (17,5%) do feminino, com idade média de 9 anos. Todos os pacientes foram submetidos à RNM e apenas em 19 foi realizado o SPECT. Dos pacientes que realizaram RNM, 75% apresentaram alterações anatômicas e dos que realizaram o SPECT todos apresentaram alterações funcionais. As alterações anatômicas estavam preferencialmente localizadas no corpo caloso (25%), septo pelúcido (15,63%), ventrículos cerebrais (12,55%), cerebelo (9,38%), lobo temporal (6,25%), lobo occipital (6,25%) e hipocampo (6,25%). As alterações funcionais predominaram no lobo frontal (53,13%), lobo temporal (28,13%) , lobo parietal (15,63%) e nos núcleos da base (3,13%). A presença de alterações anátomo-funcionais do SNC não são prioritárias para o diagnóstico, o qual deve ter sempre uma validação clínica.

Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are characterized by ultra-relativistic outflows, while supernovae are generally characterized by non-relativistic ejecta. GRB afterglows decelerate rapidly usually within ...days, because their low-mass ejecta rapidly sweep up a comparatively larger mass of circumstellar material. However supernovae, with heavy ejecta, can be in nearly free expansion for centuries. Supernovae were thought to have non-relativistic outflows except for few relativistic ones accompanied by GRBs. This clear division was blurred by SN 2009bb, the first supernova with a relativistic outflow without an observed GRB. Yet the ejecta from SN 2009bb was baryon loaded, and in nearly-free expansion for a year, unlike GRBs. We report the first supernova discovered without a GRB, but with rapidly decelerating mildly relativistic ejecta, SN 2012ap. We discovered a bright and rapidly evolving radio counterpart driven by the circumstellar interaction of the relativistic ejecta. However, we did not find any coincident GRB with an isotropic fluence of more than a sixth of the fluence from GRB 980425. This shows for the first time that central engines in type Ic supernovae, even without an observed GRB, can produce both relativistic and rapidly decelerating outflows like GRBs.
Aziridinylbenzoquinone (AZQ) was studied in a Phase II protocol for persons with glioma of the central nervous system (CNS) recurrent or progressive after surgery and radiotherapy. Patients received ...AZQ, 30 mg/m2 intravenously every 3 weeks if previously untreated or 27.5 mg/m2 if previously exposed to cytotoxic drugs. Partial response was defined as a reduction of at least 50% reduction in the product of the two longest perpendicular diameters of the indicator lesion persisting for a minimum of 28 days. Twenty‐eight patients are evaluable for response at this time. Objective response (OR) occurred in four (14.3%): two complete and two partial. Stabilization of disease (SD) was seen in 7 (25.0%). Median survival, in weeks, was >46.0 for responders, 41.7 for SD, and 19.3 for those with progressive disease. The survival experiences are significantly different (P = 0.030 Breslow). The OR rate was 21.1% in 19 without prior chemotherapy and 0% in 9 previously treated patients. There were two AZQ‐related deaths in patients with prior exposure to nitrosoureas (1 CNS hemorrhage; 1 aspiration pneumonia). One patient had an anaphylactic reaction. Three patients whose tumor initially increased in size subsequently had marked tumor shrinkage. AZQ is an active agent that must be used with added caution in patients who have received nitrosoureas. Initial tumor enlargement may precede response. Although response appears to prolong survival, the correlation between stabilization of disease and survival is not well‐defined.
