The occurrence of phase fluctuations due to thermal excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is studied for a variety of temperatures and trap geometries. We observe the statistical nature of ...the appearance of phase fluctuations and characterize the dependence of their average value on temperature, number of particles, and the trapping potential. We find pronounced phase fluctuations for condensates in very elongated traps in a broad temperature range. The results are of great importance for the realization of BEC in quasi-1D geometries, for matter wave interferometry with BECs, as well as for coherence properties of guided atom laser beams.
We present a detailed theoretical investigation of the coherence properties of beam splitters and Mach-Zehnder interferometers for guided neutral atoms. We show that such a setup permits coherent ...wave packet splitting and leads to the appearance of interference fringes for both single-mode and thermal input states, evidencing thus the robustness of the interferometer.
The human dimension of development processes in high mountain regions regularly escapes appropriate assessment due to a lack of applicable methods. Comparative data are lacking, and it is difficult ...to substantiate the position of mountain societies within nation-states. In view of the International Year of Mountains, consideration should be given to the focus of research and the need for comparative approaches. Using examples from case studies in South Asian high mountain regions, this article introduces an approach that applies widely known human development indicators to different regional levels. Evaluating the results and interpreting the dimensions of these indicators reveal pressing problems in mountain research as well as fields for further investigation.
We demonstrate the existence of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) and study the dependence of these fluctuations on the system parameters. A strong dependence on ...temperature, atom number, and trapping geometry is observed. Phase fluctuations directly affect the coherence properties of BECs. In particular, we observe instances where the phase-coherence length is significantly smaller than the condensate size. Our method of detecting phase fluctuations is based on their transformation into density modulations after ballistic expansion. An analytic theory describing this transformation is developed.
Pastoralists in North-Eastern Afghanistan are exposed to a multitude of contemporary challenges and threats while practising mobile animal husbandry in differing locations and within the spheres of ...varying power constellations. In this article a historical perspective is adopted to explore the challenges and multiple insecurities of Pashtun and Uzbek pastoral communities who seasonally engage in long-distance migration from the lowlands in Northern Afghanistan to the high pastures of Badakhshan. The same pasture area is regularly utilised by Shughni mountain farmers who practise combined mountain agriculture in the high mountain settlements close to Lake Shewa. Debates about nomadism's place in transforming societies, the drama of the commons, human security, and vulnerability issues frame the discussion of pastoralism in contested commons. Based on empirical evidence derived from open interviews with migrating pastoralists and sedentary groups on the Shewa plateau in Badakhshan, interpretations of pastoralism are presented, embedded in the context of contemporary Afghanistan. Pastoralism as a valuable survival and adaptive strategy is challenged by multiple environmental, social and political insecurities, by militancy and weak state authorities, and it unfolds in contested commons and along dangerous routes. The nexus of legal pluralism, tenure insecurity and changing control of space is identified as an important determining factor for the shape of mobile pastoralism in present-day Afghanistan. Mobile Viehzüchter in Nordost-Afghanistan sind gegenwärtig mit einer Vielzahl von Bedrohungen, Herausforderungen und Risiken in der Ausübung einer multilokalen Tierhaltung unter wechselnden Machtkonstellationen konfrontiert. In diesem Beitrag wird eine historische Perspektive zur Erforschung der Herausforderungen und vieldimensionalen Unsicherheiten verfolgt, denen paschtunische und usbekische Pastoralisten ausgesetzt sind, die im Norden Afghanistans zwischen den tiefgelegenen Gebieten des Kundus-Beckens und den sommerlichen Hochweiden in Badakhshan wandern. Dasselbe Weidegebiet wird von Shughni-Bergbauern aufgesucht, die in der Umgebung des Shewa-Sees eine kombinierte Hochgebirgslandwirtschaft praktizieren. Die Bedeutung und Funktion von Pastoralismus wird in Debatten über die Stellung und Funktion von Nomadismus im gesellschaftlichen Wandel, über bedrohte Verfügungsrechte auf Allmendweiden, über Dimensionen menschlicher Sicherheit und Verwundbarkeit eingebettet und für das heutige Afghanistan im Rahmen der von einer Vielzahl von Akteuren beanspruchten natürlichen Weideressourcen ausgelotet. Die Untersuchungen fußen auf empirischen Arbeiten in Nordafghanistan, das Material wurde in Interviews mit mobilen und ansässigen Gruppen in Chahar Dara und auf dem Shewa-Plateau gesammelt. Pastoralismus repräsentiert heute eine wertvolle Anpassungs-und Überlebensstrategie entlang gefährlicher Routen und in einem unsicheren Umfeld, das durch vielfältige ökologische, soziale und politische Unsicherheiten sowie durch angeeignete Gewalt machtvoller Akteure und einen schwachen Staat gekennzeichnet ist. Die Verflechtung von Rechtspluralismus, unsicheren Pacht- und Nutzungsverhältnissen und wechselnden Machtkonstellationen in den pastoralen Arenen ist ein zentrales Charakteristikum mobiler Viehwirtschaft im heutigen Afghanistan.
The internationalization of global issues has become quite familiar in the sphere of ecological problems with impact on the earth's conditions of survival. Development related aspects are now ...incorporated into a discussion of sustainability in which issues such as global governance, structural adjustment programs for aid-receiving economies, and control measures for migration play a prominent role. In a holistic approach towards sustainable development the interrelationship of environment and economy needs to be stressed and simultaneously the time scale of socio-political transformation needs to be considered. These developments affect high mountain areas of Third World countries in a similar manner to other peripheral regions. This paper focuses on four aspects connected with development issues in high mountain regions which are exemplified for Northern Pakistan: the function of international boundaries; the governance of conflicts on local administration; the impact of road access on regional development; and the effects of external interests such as tourism and conservation of nature on local socioeconomic conditions. These aspects have been selected to show the complexity of international relations, the high degree of integration into the world market system experienced by marginal regions, and the minority position of mountain people in this network. Along these lines the hypothesis is substantiated that an analysis of interest conflicts, exchange patterns, and regional disparities is required in order to understand the present development processes in remote mountain regions of the Developing World. /// L'internationalisation des questions globales est devenue pratiquement normale en ce qui concerne les problèmes écologiques ayant un impact sur les conditions de survie sur la terre. Les aspects liés au développement sont maintenant incorporés dans les discussions de soutenabilité dans lesquelles des questions telles que direction globale, programmes d'ajustement structurel pour les économies recevant de l'aide, et mesures de contrôle de la migration, jouent un rôle primordial. Dans le cadre d'une approche holistique visant à un développement soutenable, il est indispensable de mettre l'accent sur la relation entre l'environnement et l'économie, et simultanément de considérer l'échelle de temps de la transformation socio-politique. Ces développements affectent les régions de haute montagne des pays du Tiers Monde, d'une manière semblable à celle d'autres régions périphériques. Cet article se concentre sur quatre aspects du développement des régions de haute montagne, exmplifiés par le Pakistan septentrional: la fontion des frontières intrnationales, la résolution des conflits par l'administration locale; l'impact de l'accès routier sur le développement régional; et les effets des intérêts externes, tels que le tourisme et la préservation de la nature, sur les conditions socio-économiques locales. Ces aspects ont été sélectionnés afin de montrer la complexité des relations internationales, le haut niveau d'intégration des régions marginales dans le marché mondial, et la position minoritaire des peuples montagnards dans ce réseau. Cette perspective soutient l'hypothèse qu'une analyse des conflits d'intérêts, des modes d'échange et des disparités régionales est nécessaire pour comprendre les processus actuels de développement dans les régions montagneuses isolées du monde en développement. /// Eine globale Betrachtung von Umweltproblemen im Weltmaßstab hat sich in den letzten Jahren gerade unter dem Aspekt der ökologisch gesteuerten Überlebensbedingungen der Menschheit in ihrer Gesamtheit durchgesetzt. Entwicklungsrelevante Problemfelder werden in jüngster Zeit verstärkt in die Nachhaltigkeitsdebatte einbezogen, in der Stichworte wie Weltinnenpolitik, Strukturanpassungprogramme für Bezieher von Entwicklungshilfe und Maßnahmen zur Kontrolle internationaler Migrationsströme eine herausragende Rolle einnehmen. Bezüglich eines ganzheitlichen Ansatzes zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung erscheint es unablässig, die Interdependenz von ökologischen und ökonomischen Faktoren angemessen zu berücksichtigen und gleichzeitig die historische Dimension sozio-politischer Transformationen in die Betrachtung einzubeziehen. Selbstverständlich beeinflussen diese Entwicklungen Hochgebirgsregionen in Ländern der Dritten Welt ebenso wie andere Peripherien. In diesem Aufsatz werden vier Aspekte, die für Entwicklungsprobleme in Hochgebirgen relevant erscheinen, an Fallbeispielen aus Nordpakistan exemplifiziert: die Funktion internationaler Grenzen, die Essenz von Konflikten für lokale Verwaltungsabläufe, die Bedeutung von Verkehrserschließung für Regionalentwicklung, die Auswirkungen außengesteuerter Interessen in Tourismusprojekten und Naturschutzvorhaben auf lokale sozio-ökonomische Verhältnisse. Diese Beispiele ausgewählt, um die Komplexität internationaler Beziehungen aufzuzeigen, den auch für marginale Hochgebirgsregionen nicht zu vernachlässigenden Integrationsgrad in das Weltmarktsystem herauszustellen und die Minderheitenposition der Bergbevölkerung in diesem Beziehungsgeflecht zu verdeutlichen. Anhand dieses Rasters wird die Hypothese untermauert, daß die Analyse von Interessenkonflikten, Austauschbeziehungen und regionalen Disparitäten eine notwendige Voraussetzung für ein Verständnis der gegenwärtig ablaufenden Entwicklungsprozesse in Hochgebirgsregionen der Dritten Welt darstellt.
Quasi-one-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) in elongated traps exhibit significant phase fluctuations even at very low temperatures. We present recent experimental results on the dynamic ...transformation of phase fluctuations into density modulations during time of flight and show the excellent quantitative agreement with the theoretical prediction. In addition we confirm that, under our experimental conditions, in the magnetic trap density modulations are strongly suppressed even when the phase fluctuates. We also discuss our theoretical results on control of the condensate phase by employing a time-dependent perturbation. Our results set important limitations on future applications of BECs in precision atom interferometry and atom optics, but at the same time suggest pathways to overcome these limitations.
This paper challenges the thesis that mountain areas are regions of refuge. The refuge concept attributes irrelevant exchange and limited communication to isolated mountain habitats which mainly ...depend on production for home consumption. In contrast, it is shown that exchange relations in all walks of life have been affected not only recently but for nearly two centuries in Central Asia, although the continued importance of subsistence strategies in the agricultural sector can be observed. The Pamirian Knot provides the mountainous interface between South and Central Asia for case studies of two ethnic communities - Wakhi mountain farmers and Kirghiz pastoralists - in order to exemplify socio-political developments in similar mountain environments. Examples are presented from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and the People's Republic of China. The territories have been separated since the late nineteenth century by international boundaries conceived as the result of the imperial 'Great Game'. Emphasis is placed on developments in the livestock sector and it is shown that adaptation to changing socio-political frameworks has affected the livelihood strategies of nomads and mountain farmers alike.
