In this pictorial review, we illustrate acquired diseases or conditions of the corpus callosum that may be found by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the brain, including infarction, bleeding, ...diffuse axonal injury, multiple sclerosis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, Marchiafava-Bignami disease, glioblastoma, gliomatosis cerebri, lymphoma, metastasis, germinoma, infections, metabolic diseases, transient splenial lesion, dilated Virchow-Robin spaces, wallerian degeneration after hemispheric damage and focal splenial gliosis. MR imaging is useful for the detection and differential diagnosis of corpus callosal lesions. Due to the anatomical shape and location of the corpus callosum, both coronal and sagittal fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images are most useful for visualizing lesions of this structure.
The discoveries that nitric oxide serves important roles in mammalian bioregulation and immunology have stimulated intense interest in the chemistry and biochemistry of NO and derivatives such as ...metal nitrosyl complexes. Also of interest are strategies to deliver NO to biological targets on demand. One such strategy would be to employ a precursor which displays relatively low thermal reactivity but is photochemically active to give NO. This proposition led the authors to investigate photochemical properties of metal nitrosyl complexes such as the iron-sulfur-nitrosyl Roussin cluster anions Fe

− as well as metalloporphyrin nitrosyls including ferriheme complexes (with M. Continuous and flash photolysis studies of these compounds are reviewed here as are studies (with D.A. Wink and J.B. Mitchell of the Radiation Biology Branch of the US National Cancer Institute) using metal nitrosyl photochemistry as a vehicle for delivering NO to hypoxic cell cultures in order to sensitize γ-radiation damage.
Abstract Background In this study, we demonstrated our new device for open donor liver surgery with left-sided heptectomy by use of the real-time moving windows (RTMW) method with 8-cm transverse ...skin incision for living donors from the viewpoints of cosmetic, economic, and safety procedures. Methods After the upper abdominal 8-cm transverse skin incision was made, the subcutaneous area was exfoliated and the reverse T-shaped-abdominal incision was made, as in open surgery. After that, the 2 Kent hooks for the upper region and the 2 surgical arms for the lower region were placed. The operative fields of hepatic vein, hepatic hilus, and common hepatic artery were explored, respectively, by use of the RTMW method with the use of the 4 surgical hooks. Hepatic parenchymal dissection was carried out with the use of CUSA and laparosonic coagulating shears. Manipulations of 3 hepatic vessels and the hepatic duct were done by the usual procedure of open surgery. Results This operative procedure could be performed without laparoscopic techniques. The operative time was 7 hours, without blood transfusion. The operative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 11. Conclusions Our RTMW method for donor left-sided hepatectomy is considered to be a useful operative procedure from the viewpoints of donor safety, cosmetic advantage, and cost performance.

In this ...review, we present several cases of Mn accumulation in the brain due to acquired or congenital diseases of the abdomen including hepatic cirrhosis with a portosystemic shunt, congenital biliary atresia, primary biliary cirrhosis, congenital intrahepatic portosystemic shunt without liver dysfunction, Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome with a diffuse intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, and patent ductus venosus. Other causes of Mn accumulation in the brain are Mn overload from total parenteral nutrition and welding-related Mn intoxication.
Histological examination of gastrointestinal lesions is currently based on light-microscopic examination of thin-slice specimens, with hematoxylin and eosin staining. A study of the use of ...laser-scanning confocal microscopy (LCM) to obtain immediate microscopic images of untreated specimens for examining colorectal lesions was carried out. A probe-type LCM prototype endomicroscope that can be passed through the working channel of an endoscope has also been developed.
The study materials consisted of colorectal lesions resected either endoscopically or surgically at Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital. One hundred untreated specimens were examined using LCM. The histopathological findings in the lesions were seven cases of normal colonic mucosa, five hyperplastic polyps, 68 adenomas with low-grade dysplasia, 10 adenomas with high-grade dysplasia, and 10 adenocarcinomas. An argon laser beam with a wavelength of 488 nm was used for the LCM study. Observation of the resected normal colonic mucosa (in vitro) and the rectal mucosa of a healthy volunteer (in vivo) was possible using the endomicroscope. The LCM images for each specimen were compared with the hematoxylin-eosin-stained histopathological cross-sections.
The LCM images corresponded well with the conventional hematoxylin-eosin light-microscopic images. The nuclei were not visualized in normal mucosa or hyperplastic polyps. In adenomas with high-grade dysplasia and carcinomas, nuclei were more often visible than in adenomas with low-grade dysplasia. The rate of visualization of nuclei was significantly different ( P < 0.01) between these two groups (60.0 % vs. 10.3 %). In LCM images using endomicroscope, it was possible to recognize the orifices of the colonic glands and goblet cells both in vitro and in vivo.
Laser-scanning confocal microscopy provides immediate images that correspond well with those of hematoxylin-eosin staining. An improved probe-type LCM endomicroscope is being developed which should provide better histological images of colorectal lesions in vivo.
We investigated the mode of inheritance and map location of field resistance to rice blast in the elite rice strain Chubu 111, and yield under severe blast conditions. Chubu 111 carries the complete ...resistance gene Pii, although field testing showed this strain to be susceptible to infection. The level of field resistance of Chubu 111 was so high that chemicals used to control blast were not required, even in an epiphytotic area. Genetic analysis of field resistance to blast in 149 F₃ lines derived from a cross between Chubu 111 and the susceptible cultivar 'Mineasahi' suggested that field resistance is controlled by a dominant gene, designated Pi39(t), that cosegregates with the single sequence repeat marker loci RM3843 and RM5473 on chromosome 4. Comparative studies of polymorphism at RM3843 among Chubu 111 and six cultivars or lines in its pedigree suggested that the donor of the resistance gene was the Chinese cultivar 'Haonaihuan'. Marker-assisted selection of Pi39(t) should be useful in rice-breeding programmes for field resistance to blast.

Five-mm-diameter cylindrical defects, which do not repair spontaneously, were created in the femoral trochlea of the rabbit knees. The defects were administered sterile saline or FGF-2 (150
pg/h) via an osmotic pump for the initial 1 day, 3 days, or 2 weeks, and we assessed the FGF-2 action on the proliferation and migration of mesenchymal cells in the reparative tissue. Using a total of 126 rabbits, we performed three sets of experiments. We also studied the effect of FGF-2 on migration of marrow-derived mesenchymal cells
in vitro.
FGF-2 treatment for 1 day or 3 days induced the sequential chondrogenic repair responses that led to successful cartilaginous resurfacing of defects within 8 weeks as well as the 2-week treatment did. We confirmed by a radioisotope study that FGF-2 injected was rapidly eliminated from the defects (a residual ratio of 50% within 30
min). The effect of FGF-2 on cultured marrow-derived cells suggested that FGF-2 facilitated the mobilization and migration of replicating mesenchymal cells from bone marrow.
Only 1 day exposure to FGF-2 is sufficient for induction of the chondrogenic repair response in 5-mm-diameter full-thickness defects of articular cartilage in rabbits. FGF-2 stimulated the recruitment of mesenchymal cells into the defects, which was a limiting step for the induction of cartilage.
Trophic eggs, which are inviable and usually function as a food supply for offspring, have been regarded as extended parental investment or the outcome of parent-offspring conflict in sibling ...oophagy. Adomerus triguttulus (Heteroptera: Cydnidae) is a sub-social bug showing a complex pattern of maternal care, including progressive provisioning of host seeds and trophic-egg production. To investigate the functions of trophic eggs, we removed trophic eggs from clutches under different resource conditions. The longevity of nymphs was greatly extended by feeding upon trophic eggs when seeds were excluded. When seeds were provided, trophic-egg feeding by nymphs enhanced their development, but there were no significant effects on brood survival. Some viable eggs were also fed upon by sibling nymphs. However, there was no difference in the proportion of viable eggs consumed between clutches with and without trophic eggs. Females lay viable eggs within the first oviposition day. The synchronous hatching resulting from this oviposition mode seems to prevent sibcannibalism. The body size of females affected their relative investment in trophic eggs; larger females produced more viable eggs with relatively fewer trophic eggs. The functions and adaptive allocation of trophic eggs are discussed in light of the two hypotheses mentioned above.
