S/C magnets have many components which were designed to be compressively stressed. This paper describes a possible fatigue crack growth even under fully compressive stresses. In general crack is ...thought to close under compressive stress condition. But, if there is a tensile residual stress field in the specimen, the crack can open and grow to a considerable length. Compressive cyclic loading tests were made on the compact tension specimen with a hole at the center of ligament region where a tensile residual stress field was introduced by an excessive compressive pre-stress. Elastoplastic Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis indicated that the crack growth relaxed and re-distributed the residual tensile stress to some extent. In consequence it is experimentally verified that the crack grew to the length nearly to the fracture.

We describe magnetic resonance imaging findings in a 37-year-old man with a rare entity of isolated polyarteritis nodosa of the epididymis, which correlated well with the histopathologic findings.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of doxorubicin (Dox) on bone microstructure and metabolism in a mouse model of soft tissue sarcoma.
CCRF S-180II cells (2-4×10
cells/0.2 ml) were injected ...subcutaneously into the back of mice. The mice were divided into four groups according to tumor and treatment status and were reared and sacrificed after 2 or 4 weeks. Micro-computed tomography (CT) was performed to calculate the architecture of the femoral bone. The proximal tibia was double stained with tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and bone morphometry was performed.
Trabecular bone mass was significantly reduced in the Sarcoma and Sarcoma+Dox groups. Cortical bone thickness was reduced in the DOX group, with a stronger effect observed in the Sarcoma+Dox group. In bone morphometry, osteoclast number at the bone surface (Oc.N/BS) was significantly lower in the Dox, Sarcoma, and Sarcoma+Dox groups than in the Control group at 2 weeks. The osteoblast surface at the bone surface (Ob.S/BS) was significantly lower in the Dox and Sarcoma groups than in the Control group at 2 weeks. At 4 weeks, the differences were smaller for both Oc.N/BS and Ob.S/BS.
The use of doxorubicin alone worsened the cortical bone structure; however, the presence of both soft-tissue sarcoma and doxorubicin use worsened both cortical and trabecular bone structures from an early stage.
Treatment of the head and neck cancer has surprisingly developed in the last decade. The most possible reasons were the development of the more effective anticancer drugs and new combination therapy ...including immunotherapy. FAR therapy, which was applied to the head and neck cancer in our clinic since 1972, was a combination of vitamin A, 5-FU and radiation. We have already reported the results and the problems of FAR therapy. But, recently we have developed the clinical application of vitamin A to the chemotherapy so as to overcome the resistance of the tumor cells to the anticancer drugs. In this paper, vitamin A was focused as a potentiating agent and the possible material to overcome the resistance to the anticancer drugs.
Hokkaido is the northernmost island and the only endemic area of alveolar echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus multilocularis in Japan. The first human case was reported in 1937. After the discovery ...of this disease, various epidemiological surveys have been conducted on Echinococcus multilocularis in animals. Accumulated longitudinal epidemiological data clearly showed the geographic changes of endemic areas in Hokkaido during the last 70 years. The expansion of the endemic area and the increase of the prevalence of the parasite in foxes have increased the risk of infection for residents in this region during the last two decades. This paper reviews the epidemiological situation and control options of this parasite in animals after a brief description on the historical background of this disease in Hokkaido.
The effects of soybean transphosphatidylated phosphatidylserine (SB-tPS) on cholinergic synaptic functions were investigated using cerebral cortical synaptosomes from mice. Treatment of the ...synaptosomes with SB-tPS increased high K+-induced acetylcholine (ACh) release in a bell-shaped, dose-dependent manner without affecting ACh synthesis. SB-tPS (10 and 50 μM) also enhanced synaptosomal synthesis of sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, but did not affect phosphorylcholine synthesis. In contrast, the choline synthesis was significantly reduced as SB-tPS concentration increased. The present result that SB-tPS modified the cholinergic pathway can partly explain its nootropic functions.
