Abstract
We describe data release 3 (DR3) of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. The GAMA survey is a spectroscopic redshift and multiwavelength photometric survey in three equatorial regions ...each of 60.0 deg2 (G09, G12, and G15), and two southern regions of 55.7 deg2 (G02) and 50.6 deg2 (G23). DR3 consists of: the first release of data covering the G02 region and of data on H-ATLAS (Herschel – Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey) sources in the equatorial regions; and updates to data on sources released in DR2. DR3 includes 154 809 sources with secure redshifts across four regions. A subset of the G02 region is 95.5 per cent redshift complete to r < 19.8 mag over an area of 19.5 deg2, with 20 086 galaxy redshifts, that overlaps substantially with the XXL survey (X-ray) and VIPERS (redshift survey). In the equatorial regions, the main survey has even higher completeness (98.5 per cent), and spectra for about 75 per cent of H-ATLAS filler targets were also obtained. This filler sample extends spectroscopic redshifts, for probable optical counterparts to H-ATLAS submillimetre sources, to 0.8 mag deeper (r < 20.6 mag) than the GAMA main survey. There are 25 814 galaxy redshifts for H-ATLAS sources from the GAMA main or filler surveys. GAMA DR3 is available at the survey website (www.gama-survey.org/dr3/).
Abstract
We present measurements of the weak gravitational lensing shear power spectrum based on
$450 \deg ^2$
of imaging data from the Kilo Degree Survey. We employ a quadratic estimator in two and ...three redshift bins and extract band powers of redshift autocorrelation and cross-correlation spectra in the multipole range 76 ≤ ℓ ≤ 1310. The cosmological interpretation of the measured shear power spectra is performed in a Bayesian framework assuming a ΛCDM model with spatially flat geometry, while accounting for small residual uncertainties in the shear calibration and redshift distributions as well as marginalizing over intrinsic alignments, baryon feedback and an excess-noise power model. Moreover, massive neutrinos are included in the modelling. The cosmological main result is expressed in terms of the parameter combination
$S_8 \equiv \sigma _8 \sqrt{\Omega _{\rm m}/0.3}$
yielding S
8 = 0.651 ± 0.058 (three z-bins), confirming the recently reported tension in this parameter with constraints from Planck at 3.2σ (three z-bins). We cross-check the results of the three z-bin analysis with the weaker constraints from the two z-bin analysis and find them to be consistent. Aims. We describe a new technique for measuring accurate galaxy colours from images taken under different seeing conditions. Methods. The method involves two ingredients. First we define the ...Gaussian-aperture-and-PSF flux, which is the Gaussian-weighted flux a galaxy would have if it were observed with a Gaussian PSF. This theoretical aperture flux is independent of the PSF or pixel scale that the galaxy was observed with. Second we develop a procedure for measuring such a “GaaP” flux from observed, pixellated images. This involves modelling source and PSF as a superposition of orthogonal shapelets. A correction scheme is also described that approximately corrects for any residuals to the shapelet expansions. Results. A series of tests on simulated images shows that it is possible with this method to reduce systematic errors in the matched-aperture fluxes to the level of one percent, which makes it useful for deriving photometric redshifts from large imaging surveys.
ABSTRACT
We present a new sample of galaxy-scale strong gravitational lens candidates, selected from 904 deg2 of Data Release 4 of the Kilo-Degree Survey, i.e. the ‘Lenses in the Kilo-Degree Survey’ ...(LinKS) sample. We apply two convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) to ${\sim }88\,000$ colour–magnitude-selected luminous red galaxies yielding a list of 3500 strong lens candidates. This list is further downselected via human inspection. The resulting LinKS sample is composed of 1983 rank-ordered targets classified as ‘potential lens candidates’ by at least one inspector. Of these, a high-grade subsample of 89 targets is identified with potential strong lenses by all inspectors. Additionally, we present a collection of another 200 strong lens candidates discovered serendipitously from various previous ConvNet runs. A straightforward application of our procedure to future Euclid or Large Synoptic Survey Telescope data can select a sample of ∼3000 lens candidates with less than 10 per cent expected false positives and requiring minimal human intervention.
We present a combined tomographic weak gravitational lensing analysis of the Kilo Degree Survey (KV450) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES-Y1). We homogenize the analysis of these two public cosmic ...shear datasets by adopting consistent priors and modeling of nonlinear scales, and determine new redshift distributions for DES-Y1 based on deep public spectroscopic surveys. Adopting these revised redshifts results in a 0.8
σ
reduction in the DES-inferred value for

, which decreases to a 0.5
σ
reduction when including a systematic redshift calibration error model from mock DES data based on the MICE2 simulation. The combined KV450+DES-Y1 constraint on

. This result highlights the importance of developing methods to provide accurate redshift calibration for current and future weak-lensing surveys.
The Kilo-Degree Survey is an optical wide-field survey designed to map the matter distribution in the Universe using weak gravitational lensing. In this paper, we use these data to measure the ...density profiles and masses of a sample of ∼1400 spectroscopically identified galaxy groups and clusters from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey. We detect a highly significant signal (signal-to-noise-ratio ∼120), allowing us to study the properties of dark matter haloes over one and a half order of magnitude in mass, from M ∼ 1013–1014.5 h
−1 M⊙. We interpret the results for various subsamples of groups using a halo model framework which accounts for the mis-centring of the brightest cluster galaxy (used as the tracer of the group centre) with respect to the centre of the group's dark matter halo. We find that the density profiles of the haloes are well described by an NFW profile with concentrations that agree with predictions from numerical simulations. In addition, we constrain scaling relations between the mass and a number of observable group properties. We find that the mass scales with the total r-band luminosity as a power law with slope 1.16 ± 0.13 (1σ) and with the group velocity dispersion as a power law with slope 1.89 ± 0.27 (1σ). Finally, we demonstrate the potential of weak lensing studies of groups to discriminate between models of baryonic feedback at group scales by comparing our results with the predictions from the Cosmo-OverWhelmingly Large Simulations project, ruling out models without AGN feedback.

Aims.Accurate measurement of gravitational shear from images of distant galaxies is one of the most direct ways of studying the distribution of mass in the universe. We describe a new implementation ...of a technique for measuring shear that is based on the shapelets formalism. Methods.The shapelets technique describes PSF and observed images in terms of Gauss-Hermite expansions (Gaussians times polynomials). It allows the various operations that a galaxy image undergoes before being registered in a camera (gravitational shear, PSF convolution, pixelation) to be modeled in a single formalism, so that intrinsic ellipticities can be derived in a single modeling step. Results.The resulting algorithm, and tests of it on idealized data as well as more realistic simulated images from the STEP project, are described. Results are very promising, with attained calibration accuracy better than four percent (1 percent for round PSFs) and PSF ellipticity correction better than a factor of 20. Residual calibration problems are discussed.

. This result is insensitive to changes in the priors on nuisance parameters for intrinsic alignment, baryon feedback, and neutrino mass. KiDS shear measurements are calibrated with a new, more realistic set of image simulations and no significant B-modes are detected in the survey, indicating that systematic errors are under control. When calibrating our redshift distributions by assuming the 30-band COSMOS-2015 photometric redshifts are correct (following the Dark Energy Survey and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey), we find the tension with
Planck
is alleviated. The robust determination of source redshift distributions remains one of the most challenging aspects for future cosmic shear surveys.
We measure the weak gravitational lensing shear power spectra and their cross-power in two photometric redshift bins from the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). The ...measurements are performed directly in multipole space in terms of adjustable band powers. For the extraction of the band powers from the data we have implemented and extended a quadratic estimator, a maximum likelihood method that allows us to readily take into account irregular survey geometries, masks, and varying sampling densities. We find the 68 per cent credible intervals in the σ8–Ωm plane to be marginally consistent with results from Planck for a simple five-parameter Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model. For the projected parameter S
8 ≡ σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5 we obtain a best-fitting value of
$S_8 = 0.768_{-0.039}^{+0.045}$
. This constraint is consistent with results from other CFHTLenS studies as well as the Dark Energy Survey. Our most conservative model, including modifications to the power spectrum due to baryon feedback and marginalization over photometric redshift errors, yields an upper limit on the total mass of three degenerate massive neutrinos of Σm
ν < 4.53 eV at 95 per cent credibility, while a Bayesian model comparison does not favour any model extension beyond a simple five-parameter ΛCDM model. Combining the shear likelihood with Planck breaks the σ8–Ωm degeneracy and yields σ8 = 0.818 ± 0.013 and Ωm = 0.300 ± 0.011 which is fully consistent with results from Planck alone.
Context. The Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) is an ongoing optical wide-field imaging survey with the OmegaCAM camera at the VLT Survey Telescope, specifically designed for measuring weak gravitational ...lensing by galaxies and large-scale structure. When completed it will consist of 1350 square degrees imaged in four filters (ugri). Aims. Here we present the fourth public data release which more than doubles the area of sky covered by data release 3. We also include aperture-matched ZYJHKs photometry from our partner VIKING survey on the VISTA telescope in the photometry catalogue. We illustrate the data quality and describe the catalogue content. Methods. Two dedicated pipelines are used for the production of the optical data. The ASTRO-WISE information system is used for the production of co-added images in the four survey bands, while a separate reduction of the r-band images using the THELI pipeline is used to provide a source catalogue suitable for the core weak lensing science case. All data have been re-reduced for this data release using the latest versions of the pipelines. The VIKING photometry is obtained as forced photometry on the THELI sources, using a re-reduction of the VIKING data that starts from the VISTA pawprints. Modifications to the pipelines with respect to earlier releases are described in detail. The photometry is calibrated to the Gaia DR2 G band using stellar locus regression. Results. In this data release a total of 1006 square-degree survey tiles with stacked ugri images are made available, accompanied by weight maps, masks, and single-band source lists. We also provide a multi-band catalogue based on r-band detections, including homogenized photometry and photometric redshifts, for the whole dataset. Mean limiting magnitudes (5σ in a 2″ aperture) and the tile-to-tile rms scatter are 24.23 ± 0.12, 25.12 ± 0.14, 25.02 ± 0.13, 23.68 ± 0.27 in ugri, respectively, and the mean r-band seeing is 0.″70.
