Depressive symptoms, even at a subclinical level, have been associated with structural brain abnormalities. However, previous studies have used regions of interest or small sample sizes, limiting the ...ability to generalize the results. In this study, we examined neuroanatomical structures of both gray matter and white matter associated with depressive symptoms across the whole brain in a large sample. A total of 810 community-dwelling adult participants underwent measurement of depressive symptoms with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The participants were not demented and had no neurological or psychiatric history. To examine the gray and white matter volume, we used structural MRI scans and voxel-based morphometry (VBM); to examine the white matter integrity, we used diffusion tensor imaging with tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). In female participants, VBM revealed a negative correlation between bilateral anterior cingulate gray matter volume and the CES-D score. TBSS showed a CES-D-related decrease in fractional anisotropy and increase in radial and mean diffusivity in several white matter regions, including the right anterior cingulum. In male participants, there was no significant correlation between gray or white matter volume or white matter integrity and the CES-D score. Our results indicate that the reduction in gray matter volume and differences in white matter integrity in specific brain regions, including the anterior cingulate, are associated with depressive symptoms in women.
Objective To assess the driving fitness of patients with glaucoma by identifying specific areas and degrees of visual field impairment that threaten safe driving. Design Case–control study. Setting, ...and participants This prospective study included 36 patients with advanced glaucoma, defined as Humphrey field analyzer (HFA; 24-2 SITA standard program) measurements of mean deviation in both eyes of worse than −12 dB, and 36 age-matched and driving exposure time-matched normal subjects. All participants underwent testing in a novel driving simulator (DS) system. Participants were recruited between September 2010 and January 2012. Main outcome measures The number of collisions with simulated hazards and braking response time in 14 DS scenarios was recorded. Monocular HFA 24-2 test results from both eyes were merged to calculate the binocular integrated visual field (IVF). The position of the IVF subfields in which the collision-involved patients had lower sensitivity than the collision-uninvolved patients was compared with the track of the hazard. The cut-off value to predict an elevated risk of collisions was determined, as were its sensitivity and specificity, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve. Results Patients with advanced glaucoma were involved in a significantly higher number of collisions in the DS than the age-matched and driving exposure time-matched normal subjects (119 vs 40, respectively, p<0.0001), especially in four specific DS scenarios. In these four scenarios, IVF sensitivity was significantly lower in the collision-involved patients than in the collision-uninvolved patients in subfields on or near the track of the simulated hazard (p<0.05). The subfields with the largest AUROC curve had values ranging from 0.72 to 0.91 and were located in the paracentral visual field just below the horizontal. Conclusions Our novel DS system effectively assessed visual impairment, showing that simulators may have future potential in educating patients.

Twenty-one patients with hepatocellular carcinomas underwent RF ablation 2-7 hours after ferucarbotran-enhanced MR imaging. On unenhanced T2*-weighted images acquired after 3-5 days, AMs appeared as hypointense rims. The AM status was related to incidence of residual or recurrent tumors. This technique is feasible for visualization of AM and prediction of residual or recurrent tumors after RF ablation of the liver.
After a long period of inactivity, recent excavations at the late Miocene Maragheh Formation unexpectedly resulted in the discovery of the first fossil hominoid and second
Mesopithecus
remains from ...this area. The discovery motivated a new international initiative to conduct research in these rich fossil sites. These studies focused on the fossil hominoid and its locality, aiming to reveal more about the context of this fossil discovery. Detailed stratigraphy, sedimentology and magnetostratigraphy studies were conducted. New samples from volcaniclastic key horizons (pumice beds) in Dareh Gorg, where the hominoid fossil site is located, were dated by radiometric methods. The radiometric age determinations provide a firm tie-point for the geochronology. The polarity pattern in the palaeomagnetically investigated section corroborates the K-Ar results. The preliminary magnetostratigraphic results suggest that the hominoid locality can be correlated to the normal polarity chron C4n.2n (8.108–7.695 Ma), C4n.1n (7.642–7.528 Ma) or C3Br.1n (7.285–7.251 Ma), placing it at intervals corresponding to the mammal units MN11 or possibly early MN12. The study of fossil hominoid indicates broad affinities with a number of contemporaneous taxa from the Balkan-Iranian palaeoprovince, as well as Siwaliks and southeast Asia. A preliminary analysis of the accompanying (in situ) fauna at the hominoid site indicates the highest similarity of this level to Turolian hominoid- and
Mesopithecus
-bearing localities in Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria. However, some environmental differences are observed among these localities, based on their faunal structure and taxon properties, as well as in the different masticatory adaptations of their hominoids.
It is widely held that long-term memory gradually develops in the temporal neocortex after initial memory encoding into the hippocampus. However, little is known as to whether and where long-term ...memory can be newly created in the human temporal neocortex. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we detected brain activity in the temporal neocortex that was developed approximately 8 weeks after study of unfamiliar pictorial paired associates. Two sets of paired Fourier figures were studied, one approximately 8 weeks before test and the other immediately before test, keeping the correct performance during the tests balanced across the two sets of stimuli. Significant signal increase was observed in the right hippocampus during retrieval of newly studied pairs relative to initially studied pairs. In contrast, significant signal increase was observed in the anterior temporal cortex during retrieval of initially studied pairs relative to newly studied pairs. The greater activity during retrieval of older memory developed in the temporal neocortex provides direct evidence of formation of temporal neocortical representation for stable long-term memory.

months resulting in a significant increase in prolactin. Hyperprolactinemia resulted in enlarged corpora lutea in the ovary, because prolactin has a luteotropic activity. Thus, atrophy in the uterus, epithelial mucification in the vagina and continuous diestrus stages were observed. These events in the reproductive organs induced a decrease in estradiol, elevation of biochemical markers of bone metabolism, significant reductions of BMD in trabecular bone of the femur and decreased trabecular bone in the femur. The bone loss is associated with an increase in bone resorption due to decreased estradiol derived from the luteotropic activity of prolactin. The mechanism of dopamine blockers to induce bone loss in female rats is considered to be rodent specific because the luteotropic effects of prolactin are confined primarily to rodents. Also, it appears that chronic hyperprolactinemia and maintained corpora lutea leading to bone loss are commonly inducible in female rats receiving long-term treatment with antipsychotic drugs possessing dopamine D2 receptor antagonist activity.
Miocene hominoid fossils are known from Africa and Eurasia, in the latter ranging widely from western Europe to Anatolia and from South Asia to Southeast/East Asia. Iran is located between the known ...western and eastern Eurasian hominoid distributions and is potentially important in understanding Miocene hominoid dispersal patterns. Maragheh is a late Miocene fossil locality in northwestern Iran, well known since the nineteenth century for its abundant mammalian fossils. However, until now, the only primate fossils reported from Maragheh or Iran were the Old World monkey

. Recent field research at Maragheh has changed this situation by the discovery of the first hominoid fossil from Iran, a maxillary fragment with well-preserved second and third molars. . Molar morphology of the Maragheh hominoid is similar to that of these Eurasian Miocene genera, with only minor differences in morphology and wear pattern. Based on the presently available materials, we tentatively prefer the interpretation that the Maragheh hominoid may be related more closely to either
Ankarapithecus
or
Sivapithecus
rather than to
Ouranopithecus
, but the fragmentary nature of the fossil makes evaluations difficult. Future discoveries of this Iranian hominoid are needed to determine its phylogenetic position with more certainty.
