Absolute differential cross sections for elastic p7Be and p8B small-angle scattering were measured in inverse kinematics at an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization ...chamber IKAR was used as an active target to detect the recoil protons. The projectile tracking and isotope identification were performed with multi-wire proportional chambers and scintillation detectors. The measured cross sections were analysed using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The root-mean-square (rms) nuclear matter radii Rm=2.42(4) fm for 7Be and Rm=2.58(6) fm for 8B were obtained. The radial density distribution deduced for 8B exhibits a proton halo structure with the rms halo radius Rh=4.24(25) fm. A comparison of the deduced experimental radii is displayed with existing experimental and theoretical data.
A study of cooled ¹⁹⁷Au projectile-fragmentation products has been performed with a storage ring. This has enabled metastable nuclear excitations with energies up to 3 MeV, and half-lives extending ...to minutes or longer, to be identified in the neutron-rich nuclides ¹⁸³(,)¹⁸⁴(,)¹⁸⁶Hf and ¹⁸⁶(,)¹⁸⁷Ta. The results support the prediction of a strongly favored isomer region near neutron number 116.
A thick neutron skin emerges from the first determination of root mean square radii of the proton distributions for 17−22N from charge changing cross section measurements around 900A MeV at GSI. ...Neutron halo effects are signalled for 22N from an increase in the proton and matter radii. The radii suggest an unconventional shell gap at N = 14 arising from the attractive proton–neutron tensor interaction, in good agreement with shell model calculations. Ab initio, in-medium similarity re-normalization group, calculations with a state-of-the-art chiral nucleon–nucleon and three-nucleon interaction reproduce well the data approaching the neutron drip-line isotopes but are challenged in explaining the complete isotopic trend of the radii.
Gamow-Teller β decay is forbidden if the number of nodes in the radial wave functions of the initial and final states is different. This Δn=0 requirement plays a major role in the β decay of heavy ...neutron-rich nuclei, affecting the nucleosynthesis through the increased half-lives of nuclei on the astrophysical r-process pathway below both Z=50 (for N>82) and Z=82 (for N>126). The level of forbiddenness of the Δn=1ν1g9/2→π0g7/2 transition has been investigated from the β− decay of the ground state of 207Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus 207Tl in an experiment at the ISOLDE Decay Station. From statistical observational limits on possible γ-ray transitions depopulating the π0g7/2−1 state in 207Tl, an upper limit of 3.9×10−3% was obtained for the probability of this decay, corresponding to logft>8.8 within a 95% confidence limit. This is the most stringent test of the Δn=0 selection rule to date.
The absolute differential cross section for small-angle proton elastic scattering on the proton-rich 8B nucleus has been measured in inverse kinematics for the first time. The experiment was ...performed using a secondary radioactive beam with an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI, Darmstadt. The active target, namely hydrogen-filled time projection ionization chamber IKAR, was used to measure the energy, angle and vertex point of the recoil protons. The scattering angle of the projectiles was simultaneously determined by the tracking detectors. The measured differential cross section is analyzed on the basis of the Glauber multiple scattering theory using phenomenological nuclear-density distributions with two free parameters. The radial density distribution deduced for 8B exhibits a halo structure with the root-mean-square (rms) matter radius Rm=2.58(6) fm and the rms halo radius Rh=4.24(25) fm. The results on 8B are compared to those on the mirror nucleus 8Li investigated earlier by the same method. A comparison is also made with previous experimental results and theoretical predictions for both nuclei.

The structure of 208Po resulting from the EC/β+ decay of 208At was studied at CERN's ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). The high statistics afforded by the high yield of 208At and the high efficiency HPGe ...clusters at the IDS allowed for greater insight into lower intensity transitions and thus significant expansion of the 208Po level scheme. Furthermore, investigation into the isomeric state yielded a new half life 377(9) ns in addition to uncovering new transitions populating the state.

The neutron-deficient 115Cs was produced at ISOLDE, CERN by spallation reaction using 1.4 GeV proton on LaC2 target. The exotic decay modes were studied by using a charged particle array (DSSD and ...pad detectors) and a γ-detector array (four Clovers) at the ISOLDE decay station (IDS). In this report, results on observed β-delayed particle emission from 115Cs, a nucleus close to proton drip line, is presented. By measuring the time distribution in the delayed proton spectrum, the half-life of the ground state of 115Cs was extracted. The obtained half-life is in agreement with previous reported value. For the first time, the p-unbound states of 115Xe, obtained by measuring beta-delayed protons from 115Cs is reported.
A 410 MeV/u 238U projectile beam was used to create cadmium isotopes via abrasion-fission in a beryllium target placed at the entrance of the in-flight separator FRS at GSI. The fission fragments ...were separated by the FRS and injected into the isochronous storage ring ESR for mass measurements. Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) was performed under two different experimental conditions, with and without Bρ-tagging at the high-resolution central focal plane of the FRS. In the experiment with Bρ-tagging the magnetic rigidity of the injected fragments was determined with an accuracy of 2⋅10−4. A new method of data analysis, which uses a correlation matrix for the combined data set from both experiments, has provided experimental mass values of 25 rare isotopes for the first time. The high sensitivity and selectivity of the method have given access to nuclides detected with a rate of a few atoms per week. In this letter we present for the 129,130,131Cd isotopes mass values directly measured for the first time. The experimental mass values of cadmium as well as for tellurium and tin isotopes show a pronounced shell effect towards and at N=82. Shell quenching cannot be deduced from a single new mass value, nor by a better agreement with a theoretical model which explicitly takes into account a quenching feature. This is in agreement with the conclusion from γ-ray spectroscopy and confirms modern shell-model calculations.
