Mining activities in general, and quarrying processes in particular, generate huge amounts of tailings with a considerable presence of fine particles and with a variable composition of minerals, ...which could limit the direct application of those wastes. Under the paradigm of a circular economy, more effort has to be made to find adequate applications for those secondary raw materials. In this study, a process was proposed and tests were performed to valorise fine particle product as a raw material for the building and construction industry. Samples were taken from wastes in several aggregate production plants, being characterized and processed to remove the clayey components to obtain the cleanest quartz fraction. Then, different characterization and validation tests were carried out to analyse the application of these products as raw materials in the building and construction industry (cement and ceramics). Results showed that with no complex technologies, the tailings can be considered as a mineral raw material in different applications.
Background and aim
The use of amendments to immobilize metals in polluted soils is a widely accepted remediation approach, and in the framework of the circular economy, amendments produced from ...mining and/or biomass waste have gained relevance. However, the application of such amendments can also mobilize metalloids. Here we propose the combination of nanoscale zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) with dunite (mining waste) and compost for the remediation and restoration of soil affected by high concentrations of As and metals.
Methods
To this end, we treated pots containing the polluted soil with combinations of dunite, compost, and nZVI for 75 days. In addition,
Sinapis alba
was used to evaluate the effects of the amendments on pollutant accumulation in the plant. The mobility of the pollutants was monitored through TCLP extraction and by sampling pore water. Furthermore, pH, available P, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were also determined.
Results
Dunite application led to the immobilization of metals, and supplied Mg, thus improving CEC. On the other hand, compost increased nutrient content, and also promoted plant growth. However, this amendment caused a dramatic increase in As accumulation in the plants. Finally, the application of nZVI in combination with the other two amendments was found to be the most appropriate strategy since it not only prevented As mobilization and accumulation but also added nutrients to the soil, thus promoting plant growth.
Conclusion
The combination of nZVI with dunite mining waste and compost proved effective for the remediation of soil simultaneously polluted by As and metals.

The aims of this study were to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with scabies seen by dermatologists in Spain, to identify the possible emergence of atypical forms of scabies, and to explore the frequency of treatment failures and associated risk factors.
We conducted an observational, cross-sectional, multicenter study of data collected prospectively in April and May 2023 using the CLINI-AEDVp platform created by the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV).
Participating dermatologists from 31 hospitals in 15 of Spain's autonomous communities recorded 186 cases of active scabies (51% in women) during the study period. A diagnostic certainty level of A, B or C as per the International Alliance for the Control of Scabies Consensus Criteria was required for diagnosis. Overall, 92% of patients had clinical features of classic scabies and 66% had already been treated with a scabicide for the current episode. Of the treated patients, only 36% had received and completed adequate treatment (including the simultaneous treatment of all household members) and 50% had not received clear written recommendations.
In a high proportion of scabies cases, the patient has already received treatment. In those cases, we observe several remediable shortcomings that could explain why some of these treatments fail. Remedying these deficiencies should lead to better control of scabies and an improved assessment of the actual effectiveness of currently available scabicides.

Diversos trabajos apoyan la hipótesis de que en España se está produciendo un aumento de incidencia de la escabiosis, y existen dudas sobre el posible desarrollo de resistencias y el ...incremento de formas clínicas atípicas. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron caracterizar el perfil demográfico y clínico de los pacientes de escabiosis atendidos por dermatólogos en España, identificar la posible aparición de escabiosis atípicas, así como describir la frecuencia y los posibles factores de riesgo de los fracasos terapéuticos previos.
Realizamos un estudio observacional, transversal, multicéntrico con recogida de datos prospectiva, en abril y mayo de 2023 dentro de la plataforma CLINI-AEDVp de la Academia Española de Dermatología y Venereología.
Se reclutaron 186 casos de escabiosis activa (51% mujeres) en 31 centros participantes de 15 comunidades autónomas. Se requirió un nivel A, B o C de los criterios de consenso de la International Alliance for the Control of Scabies (IACS) para el diagnóstico. El 92% de los pacientes presentaron formas clínicas típicas de escabiosis y un 66% había recibido tratamiento escabicida previo para el episodio en curso. De los pacientes previamente tratados, solo un 36% había recibido y cumplimentado una pauta terapéutica adecuada que incluyera el tratamiento simultáneo de convivientes, y un 50% careció de un documento escrito y claro con las recomendaciones.
Una elevada proporción de los casos de escabiosis atendidos actualmente ha recibido tratamiento previo. En estos se observan defectos corregibles que pueden justificar parte de los fracasos terapéuticos. Trabajar en la mejora de las deficiencias encontradas ayudará a un mejor control de la enfermedad y a evaluar la efectividad actual de los escabicidas disponibles.

Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (hFH) is an inherited disorder commonly found among the general population. Premature cardiovascular disease, especially coronary artery disease, is the ...most important complication in these patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical manifestations and the characteristics of cardiovascular disease in the Spanish hFH population.
Analysis of 819 non-related cases (449 females and 370 males), with a clinical diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia, from 69 lipid clinics. Clinical and lipid profile at diagnosis along with personal and familial backgrounds related to cardiovascular disease were registered in a central database.
Mean total cholesterol at diagnosis was 412 (87) mg/dl in women, and 400 (78) mg/dl in men (p = 0.049). HDL-c was higher in females than in males (57 14 vs. 47.7 12.7 mg/dl, respectively, p < 0.0001). Xantomas were present in 22.5% of cases, and 21.7% of subjects had evidence of premature cardiovascular disease which was more frequent in males than in females (30.8% and 14.3%, respectively; p < 0.001). In a multivariant analysis, a significant and positive correlation was observed between cardiovascular disease and age, gender, tobacco consumption, LDL-c levels, blood pressure and body mass index.
The clinical manifestations and the presence of cardiovascular disease in Spanish hFH patients are similar to those described in other populations. LDL-c levels, age, gender, smoking, hypertension and body mass index are important predictors of cardiovascular disease in these patients.

In this paper, solid phase sintering of a natural anhydrite-glass composite from powders of these materials is described. The microstructure of the sintered material has been analysed by means of ...scanning electron microscopy and X-ray emission. Some properties of this new material have been determined. Specific applications for this new sintered material are suggested.
The potential application of Al-containing MCM-41 for the catalytic degradation of polyolefinic plastics and used lubricating oils has been investigated and compared with the behavior of ZSM-5 ...zeolite and commercial amorphous SiO2-Al2O3. For all the studied raw plastics, MCM-41 presents significant higher activity than the amorphous catalyst, and even superior to that of ZSM-5 for the degradation of pure polypropylene, a mixture of three polyolefins (high density polyethylene + low density polyethylene + polypropylene) and a lube distillate. On the contrary, the ZSM-5 zeolite leads to higher conversions in the degradation of pure polyethylenic plastics and shows a slower deactivation during the lube oil cracking. Regarding the product distribution, while ZSM-5 leads mainly to light hydrocarbons (C2-C5), MCM-41 cracks these wastes into liquid fractions (gasoline and middle distillates), which suggests the cracking pathway is not the same with these two materials, being governed by their pore size and/or their acid strength.
