We analyzed 207 patients which constituted 63.5% of all newly diagnosed OPSCC in Hong Kong during a 5-year period from 2005 to 2009.
We used E6/7 mRNA as a marker of oncogenic involvement and found 20.8% (43/207) of OPSCC and 29.0% (36/124) of tonsillar SCC was associated with HPV. HPV-16 was identified in all cases except one (HPV-18). Patients with HPV-associated OPSCCs were significantly younger than HPV-negative patients (mean age: 59.8 vs. 63.9 years, P = 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that HPV-associated OPSCC was more likely to occur in nonsmokers (39.5% vs. 15.1%, OR: 2.89, P = 0.05), nondrinkers (52.5% vs. 25.6%, OR: 2.72, P = 0.04), originate from the palatine tonsils (83.7% vs. 53.7%, OR: 3.88, P = 0.01), present with an early primary tumor (T1/2; 79.1% vs. 47.6%, OR: 3.81, P = 0.004), and exhibit basaloid differentiation (33.3% vs. 7.3%, OR: 19.74, P = 0.006). HPV positivity was an independent predictor for better prognosis for both 5-year overall and 5-year disease-specific survivals (DSS; 63.0% vs. 29.7%, HR: 0.33, P < 0.001, and 87.8% vs. 42.6%, HR: 0.16, P < 0.001, respectively).
The estimated age-standardized incidence of OPSCC in Hong Kong during the period 2005-2009 was 0.12/100,000/year.
This study has provided the most comprehensive clinical and pathologic information to date about this newly recognized disease in southern Chinese. In view of the global trend, we should anticipate and prepare for an increase in HPV-related OPSCC in southern China.
Abstract
Objectives
Dementia interferes with older adults’ functioning in cognitive, daily, psychosocial, and neuroendocrine domains. The present study examined the psychophysiological effects of ...dance movement therapy (DMT) and physical exercise for older adults with dementia.
Methods
This randomized controlled trial recruited 204 older adults diagnosed with mild dementia into the DMT, exercise, or waitlist control group. Both DMT and exercise interventions had similar intensity and comprised 24 hr of intervention that spanned over 12 weeks. All participants completed self-report questionnaires on psychosocial well-being, daily functioning, neurocognitive assessments, and salivary cortisol measures at baseline and 3 follow-up measurements more than 1 year.
Results
The DMT group showed significant decreases in depression, loneliness, and negative mood (d = 0.33–0.42, p < .05) and improved daily functioning (d = 0.40, p < .01) and diurnal cortisol slope (d = 0.30, p < .01). The effects on daily functioning and cortisol slope remained at 1-year follow-up. The exercise group of matched intensity showed no significant effects on the outcomes.
Discussion
The study findings support the potential utility of DMT as a multifaceted intervention for improving various aspects of functioning in older adults with declining cognitive abilities. The lack of beneficial effects for our exercise intervention and long-term DMT effects highlights the need to maintain persistent levels of exercise with adequate intensity and duration.

Aim
Hong Kong's existing mental health services are inadequate in addressing young people's needs. The LevelMind@JC project established an early intervention platform of community‐based ...youth‐specific mental health centres involving youth workers, cross‐disciplinary professionals, and young people. The project intends to (1) pilot a community platform that incorporates a youth‐friendly early screening tool with preventative intervention capabilities, (2) set up a state‐of‐the‐art training system for youth mental health workers, (3) establish a community clinical support team and (4) develop a timely evaluation system to monitor the service and evaluate its outcome and cost‐effectiveness against generic youth services.
Methods
Six hundred LevelMind@JC service users will be assessed alongside 600 young people visiting generic youth centres and 100 young people in the community. Participants will be matched according to age, gender, years of education, socioeconomic status, and level of distress. Assessments, administered at baseline and at 3, 6 and 12 months, will cover demographic characteristics, psychological distress, quality of life, depressive and anxiety symptoms, functioning, physical health and lifestyle, personality and social measures, cognitive measures and health economics. Mixed‐model ANOVAs will be used to indicate interactions between services and between time points.
Conclusion
Built upon a community‐based support model, LevelMind@JC aims to promote positive mental health in young people through the collaboration of cross‐disciplinary mental health professionals. If efficacy and cost‐effectiveness are established, the project could be scaled up, implicating a wider reach of care. We anticipate its success to be critical in combatting mental health issues stemming from both personal and population‐level stressors.
This paper proposes and implements a novel multi-frequency multi-power wireless power transfer (MFMP-WPT) system based on one single transmitter for simultaneously and compatibly energizing ...multi-standard receivers. Generally, implementing a multi-frequency WPT often requires a compromise in system complexity, control difficulty, switching frequency, or transmission efficiency. By using only a single transmitter with an artful inverter topology, the proposed MFMP-WPT system can effectively achieve multi-frequency multi-magnitude superposition and switching frequency reduction while maintaining the control fitness and convenience of square-wave generation with 50% duty cycle. Moreover, by switching at the fundamental frequency in a range of 80-130 kHz, the single transmitter becomes competent for one-to-many MFMP-WPT operation for diverse wireless power on-demands. Consequently, the fundamental and high-order harmonic wireless energies with multiple power levels can be, respectively, picked up by the multi-standard receivers, depending on their energy requirements. The experimental transmission and system efficiencies can reach 81.57% and 64.74% under MFMP-WPT, respectively. Theoretical analysis, computer simulation, and experimental results are provided to verify the feasibility of the proposed MFMP-WPT system.

, leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hyperlactatemia, severe hypotension, bacterial dissemination from lung to other organs, multiorgan dysfunction, and ultimately death. We evaluated the predictive power of this rabbit model for antibiotic efficacy testing by determining whether a humanized dosing regimen of meropenem, a potent antipseudomonal β-lactam antibiotic, when administered with or without intensive care unit (ICU)-supportive care (fluid challenge and norepinephrine), could halt or reverse natural disease progression. Our humanized meropenem dosing regimen produced a plasma concentration-time profile in the rabbit model similar to those reported in patients with ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia. In this rabbit model, treatment with humanized meropenem and ICU-supportive care achieved the highest level of survival, halted the worsening of ARDS biomarkers, and reversed lethal hypotension, although treatment with humanized meropenem alone also conferred some protection compared to treatment with placebo (saline) alone or placebo plus ICU-supportive care. In conclusion, this rabbit model could help predict whether an antibiotic will be efficacious for the treatment of human ventilator-associated pneumonia.

ZnO nanoparticles are nontoxic inorganic oxides that have been extensively used as a supplement for zinc nutrients and antibacterial agents in the food industry, especially in edible coatings to protect food from deterioration by viruses, fungi, and bacteria. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles were fabricated by a hydrothermal method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The prepared ZnO nanoparticles exhibited good antibacterial properties against several bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis. The ZnO nanoparticles as an antibacterial agent were incorporated into a chitosan/gum arabic (CH/GA) edible coating, and the protective performance for the preservation of bananas was investigated. The obtained CH/GA/ZnO coating significantly improved the quality and shelf life of bananas at a temperature of 35 °C and relative humidity (RH) of 54 %. The banana surface treated with the CH/GA/ZnO coating was relatively smooth with a CH/GA/ZnO film thickness of approximately 50 μm. The utilization of the resultant coating enabled the maintenance of banana quality, including fruit firmness, weight loss, reducing sugar, and titratable acidity, for a remarkably longer period. The banana coated with the CH/GA/ZnO system was demonstrated to maintain freshness for more than 17 d in comparison with the less than 13 d for the control banana at 35 °C and 54 % RH.
Restrictive COVID-19 measures can have significant mental health impacts, particularly on young people. How such measures may influence day-to-day momentary affect, nonetheless, remains to be ...explored. Experience sampling data were collected from 165 young people (aged 15–24) as part of a larger epidemiological youth mental health study in Hong Kong. We examined the impact of one of the most stringent COVID-19 measures – dine-in restrictions – on momentary positive and negative affect and current contexts and activities of these young people. The effects of a milder form of COVID-19 measure – school suspension – were separately examined. Multilevel analysis revealed that those in the dine-in ban group, compared to dining-as-usual, showed significantly reduced momentary positive affect (

= 0.003). Its effect remained significant even when accounting for baseline depressive and anxiety symptoms and socioeconomic status (

The effect of dine-in ban on reduced momentary positive affect was found specifically when participants were in indoor locations (e.g., home, office), alone, and engaged in passive leisure activities. This pattern was not observed when participants were at school or at other outdoor locations, with friends, or engaged in active leisure activities. No significant effect of school suspension on momentary affect was observed. More severe COVID-19 measures, such as dine-in ban, can have significant impacts on the momentary positive affect of young people. Certain contexts and activities may offer protection against the consequences of COVID-19 measures. The current findings may help to inform future designs of mental health interventions and public health policies.
Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) is one of the most geographically widespread insect orders in the world, and its species play important and diverse ecological and applied roles. Climate change is ...one of the biggest challenges to biodiversity this century, and lepidopterans are vulnerable to climate change. Temperature-dependent gene expression differences are of relevance under the ongoing climate crisis. However, little is known about how climate affects gene expression in lepidopterans and the ecological consequences of this, particularly with respect to genes with biased expression in one of the sexes. The common yellow butterfly, Eurema hecabe (Family Pieridae), is one of the most geographically widespread lepidopterans that can be found in Asia, Africa, and Australia. Nevertheless, what temperature-dependent effects there may be and whether the effects differ between the sexes remain largely unexplored. Here, we generated high-quality genomic resources for E. hecabe along with transcriptomes from eight developmental stages. Male and female butterflies were subjected to varying temperatures to assess sex-specific gene expression responses through mRNA and microRNA transcriptomics. We find that there are more temperature-dependent sex-biased genes in females than males, including genes that are involved in a range of biologically important functions, highlighting potential ecological impacts of increased temperatures. Further, by considering available butterfly data on sex-biased gene expression in a comparative genomic framework, we find that the pattern of sex-biased gene expression identified in E. hecabe is highly species-specific, rather than conserved across butterfly species, suggesting that sex-biased gene expression responses to climate change are complex in butterflies. Our study lays the foundation for further understanding of differential responses to environmental stress in a widespread lepidopteran model and demonstrates the potential complexity of sex-specific responses of lepidopterans to climate change.
Musical sounds, along with speech, are the most prominent sounds in our daily lives. They are highly dynamic, yet well structured in the temporal domain in a hierarchical manner. The temporal ...structures enhance the predictability of musical sounds. Western music provides an excellent example: while time intervals between musical notes are highly variable, underlying beats can be realized. The beat-level temporal structure provides a sense of regular pulses. Beats can be further organized into units, giving the percept of alternating strong and weak beats (i.e. metrical structure or meter). Examining neural processing at the meter level offers a unique opportunity to understand how the human brain extracts temporal patterns, predicts future stimuli and optimizes neural resources for processing. The present study addresses two important questions regarding meter processing, using the mismatch negativity (MMN) obtained with electroencephalography (EEG): 1) how tempo (fast vs. slow) and type of metrical structure (duple: two beats per unit vs. triple: three beats per unit) affect the neural processing of metrical structure in non-musically trained individuals, and 2) how early music training modulates the neural processing of metrical structure. Metrical structures were established by patterns of consecutive strong and weak tones (Standard) with occasional violations that disrupted and reset the structure (Deviant). Twenty non-musicians listened passively to these tones while their neural activities were recorded. MMN indexed the neural sensitivity to the meter violations. Results suggested that MMNs were larger for fast tempo and for triple meter conditions. Further, 20 musically trained individuals were tested using the same methods and the results were compared to the non-musicians. While tempo and meter type similarly influenced MMNs in both groups, musicians overall exhibited significantly reduced MMNs, compared to their non-musician counterparts. Further analyses indicated that the reduction was driven by responses to sounds that defined the structure (Standard), not by responses to Deviants. We argue that musicians maintain a more accurate and efficient mental model for metrical structures, which incorporates occasional disruptions using significantly fewer neural resources.
