Innovative agricultural systems need to combine the production of goods with the provision of environmental services. When agronomists analyse or design multifunctional agro-ecosystems, they thus need to include knowledge of an increasing range of scientific disciplines (plant biology, soil science, ecology, etc.) while continuing to use their systemic approach as a cornerstone. Increasing amounts of knowledge of different types (concepts and data) will thus have to be included in systemic approaches that are developed in the agronomic domain. Knowledge integration and sharing are frequently hampered by the lack of detail in the assumptions made in each discipline. We hypothesise that a standardised description of the conceptual model underlying data collection and the analysis of agro ecosystems would improve transparency and knowledge integration.

The CMA protocol proved to be efficient in guiding the process of conceptualisation up to the point at which the variables that need to be measured in the field are identified and interlinked. It enabled elicitation and integration of knowledge from different biophysical disciplines and different types of expertise during the conceptualisation process. It also enabled identification of knowledge gaps, and the design and analysis of experiments to tackle complex problems. The CMA yielded by the protocol could be used again, thanks to its transparency and modularity. Further work is underway to improve the CMA representation and its uses in numerical model specification and in participatory methods for the design of cropping systems.
In the current deforestation context, agroforestry is increasingly considered in the tropical zone for its potential contribution to biodiversity conservation. In Guinée Forestière (Guinea, West ...Africa), coffee-based species rich agroforests are currently expanding on agricultural land around most villages. To assess the role these agroforests play with respect to biodiversity conservation, we compared their tree structure and diversity with those of a neighbouring natural forest. Eighty plots were sampled using a variable area transect method (60 plots distributed into 3 village agroforests, 20 natural forest plots). The structure of coffee-based agroforests showed obvious signs of farmers' management: density of mature trees was significantly lower than in natural forest and most juvenile trees were eliminated and replaced by coffee trees. However, tree seedling density was not significantly different than in natural forest. Tree species richness and diversity were also lower than in natural forest but much higher than in any other agricultural or agroforestry land use system. These results are close to those obtained in the coffee-based agroforests of Central America, confirming that coffee-based agroforests retain many forest species that play a key role in the conservation of regional forest tree diversity.

Using 3D architectural models to assess light availability and root bulkiness in agroforestry systems. In many parts of the humid tropics, coconut trees are frequently intercropped with food crops, ...or tree crops such as cocoa. The performance of such systems depends on planting patterns, but also on growing conditions for crops below the coconut canopy throughout the development of the coconut trees. We used a modelling approach providing indicators for assessing above-ground competition for light and below-ground competition for space, in order to optimize intercropping in coconut smallholdings. Light transmission and the number of coconut roots in the interrow were assessed in coconut smallholdings from 6 to 60 years old. The modelling of light transmission through coconut stands was based on three-dimensional virtual coconut trees and a numerical light model that computed the shade cast by coconut trees on underlying crops. Root colonization in the interrow was assessed with virtual 3D coconut root systems. Our results showed that intercropping with shade-tolerant species was not limited by light transmission from the 35th year after coconut tree planting. However, at that stage of coconut tree development, the density of primary roots in the interrow limited intercrop development, especially for root and tuber crops. Alteration of the planting pattern over time increased light transmission but did not significantly affect root density. This modelling approach, which involved little parameterization that was easily done, appeared to be an efficient tool for recommending coconut tree planting patterns and densities, as well as indicating intercrop potential depending on their location in the most sunlit areas with minimum root competition.

Agroecosystems also produce ...other goods and services essential to human beings, such as climate regulation, flood mitigation, and landscape amenity. Economists and ecologists have developed the ecosystem services framework to foster the provision of these non-commercial services. Scientists can therefore help decision makers to develop sustainable ecosystems by studying ecosystem services. Here, we analyze the trade-offs of ecosystem services of farming systems. We discuss case studies of mixed perennial crops. The set of ecosystem services provided by these agroecosystems depends on their composition, structure, and management. Complex rule-based management will be required if winegrowers are to maintain an adequate set of ecosystem services across contrasting climatic years. Innovations including cover crops in banana systems can fulfill most of the objective set but will rely on increased farm labor. We then discuss the advantages, challenges, and opportunities to include the description of relations between ecosystem services in cropping system design. We propose to extend the yield gap analysis to ecosystem services, as a service gap analysis. This extension faces methodological questions about the potential provision of a service in a region. We conclude on the challenges that need to be faced if we want to use ecosystem services trade-offs to improve the contribution of agricultural systems to human well-being.

Coconut (Cocos nucifera)-based agroforestry systems hold promise as a sustainableland use activity in the Melanesian islands, where food dependency on foreign sources andland shortages are increasing ...drarnatically. This chapter describes the dynamics of thesesmallholder production systems in the Malo Island of northern Vanuatu (Melanesia), where adual economy operates in which resources are dedicated to both subsistence and commercialproduction. The floristic elements found in the coconut plantations were typical of thosedescribed in the hurnid tropical homegardens elsewhere, with an average of 12 tree speciesper plot. Mean Shannon Weaver index was 1.57 with the vertical profile of vegetation havingone-to-five strata. Although the coconut palrns dorninate these production systems, in certaincases other trees may dominate it. Situations in coconut plots evolve throughout thedevelopment phase of the palms. Based on that, five types of smallholder coconut-basedagroforestry systems were recognized, which falls into two main evolutionary patterns: (1) aperennial occupation of the cultivated land by coconut trees, because of coconut replanting,and (2) a gradua1 return to tree fallow in which the coconut palms gradually disappearbecause of changes in the complex multistrata vegetation.

Le protocole de Kyoto prévoit, par le Mécanisme de Développement Propre (MDP), l'instauration d'un marché du carbone intéressant les pays en développement, sous la forme de projets énergies ...renouvelables, puits de carbone, ou filières de substitution. Les certifications de réduction d'émission (CREs) ne sont accessibles à la filière cocotier, pour la première période d'engagement (2008-2012), que via les projets énergies renouvelables (huile de coco, biodiesel, énergie de la biomasse) ou le remplacement de vieilles cocoteraies improductives par des projets de reforestation de type puits de C. Pariant sur l'éligibilité future et plus large des plantations pérennes, telles celles de cocotier pour les projets puits de C, le CIRAD a engagé depuis 3 ans des recherches au Vanuatu sur les stocks de C dans des chronoséquences de plantations, partant des milieux de référence alternatifs (forêt secondaire, jardin, pâturage, plantation mixte) et les comparant à des plantations de différents âges. Les stocks de C, N ont été évalués dans la biomasse par dosages et allométrie et dans le sol par NIRS (Near Infra Red Reflectance Spectrometry). On a observé systématiquement une perte de 10 à 40% de MO dans les horizons superficiels du sol, suite au remplacement des forêts. La perte s'opère surtout aux stades initiaux de la plantation, puis les teneurs se maintiennent. Il existe d'importants gradients horizontaux de teneur en MO dans les plantations, entre les lignes de vidange et les lignes andainées en litières. La gestion raisonnée des phases initiales de plantation ainsi que celle de l'abondante litière des cocotiers (> 80% de la productivité primaire nette, NPP) devrait permettre de minimiser ces pertes observées. Les systèmes cultivés traditionnels du Vanuatu incluent une phase de jachère après la mise en culture. Le maintien des jachères s'avère essentiel pour une gestion durable des exploitations. Une plantation de cocotiers de 20 ans a en outre été suivie en continu durant trois ans pour ses échanges d'énergie, d'H2O et de CO2 par eddy-corrélation, participant au réseau mondial de stations FLUXNET (bilans de C des écosystèmes terrestres). Les flux de photosynthèse sont très élevés en comparaison d'autres plantations, tropicales ou pérennes. La NPP atteint 32tMS hã-1 an-1. Cette croissance est contrebalancée par une respiration de l'écosystème élevée, qui ne laisse finalement qu'une fixation de C annuelle de l'ordre de 3tC ha-1 an-1 ce qui est une valeur moyenne, couramment observée dans d'autres écosystèmes terrestres. Les flux enregistrés ont été modélisés, en fonction des variables de structure et des variables climatiques, afin de permettre des simulations ultérieures et une extrapolation des résultats.
