The first direct detection of gravitational waves was made in 2015 September with the Advanced LIGO detectors. By prior arrangement, a worldwide collaboration of electromagnetic follow-up observers ...were notified of candidate gravitational wave events during the first science run, and many facilities were engaged in the search for counterparts. Three alerts were issued to the electromagnetic collaboration over the course of the first science run, which lasted from 2015 September to 2016 January. Two of these alerts were associated with the gravitational wave events since named GW150914 and GW151226. In this paper we provide an overview of the Liverpool Telescope contribution to the follow-up campaign over this period. Given the hundreds of square degree uncertainty in the sky position of any gravitational wave event, efficient searching for candidate counterparts required survey telescopes with large (∼degrees) fields of view. The role of the Liverpool Telescope was to provide follow-up classification spectroscopy of any candidates. We followed candidates associated with all three alerts, observing 1, 9 and 17 candidates respectively. We classify the majority of the transients we observed as supernovae. No counterparts were identified, which is in line with expectations given that the events were classified as black hole–black hole mergers. However these searches laid the foundation for similar follow-up campaigns in future gravitational wave detector science runs, in which the detection of neutron star merger events with observable electromagnetic counterparts is much more likely.

Space Telescope, with the primary goal of studying its underlying supernova, SN 2019jrj. The monitoring spanned the time interval between 1.3 and 370 days after the burst, in the observer frame. We find that the afterglow emission can be modelled with a forward shock propagating in a uniform medium modified by time-variable extinction along the line of sight. A jet break could be present after 7 rest-frame days, and accordingly the maximum luminosity of the underlying supernova (SN) ranges between that of stripped-envelope core-collapse SNe of intermediate luminosity and that of the luminous GRB-associated SN 2013dx. The observed spectral absorption lines of SN 2019jrj are not as broad as in classical GRB SNe and are instead more similar to those of less-luminous core-collapse SNe. Taking the broad-lined stripped-envelope core-collapse SN 2004aw as an analogue, we tentatively derive the basic physical properties of SN 2019jrj. We discuss the possibility that a fraction of the TeV emission of this source might have had a hadronic origin and estimate the expected high-energy neutrino detection level with IceCube.

Compact binaries such as double neutron stars or a neutron star paired with a black hole, are strong sources of gravitational waves during coalescence and also the likely progenitors of ...various electromagnetic phenomena, notably short-duration gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs), and kilonovae. In this work, we generate populations of synthetic binaries and place them in galaxies from the large-scale hydrodynamical galaxy evolution simulation, eagle. With our zELDA code, binaries are seeded in proportion to star formation rate, and we follow their evolution to merger using both the bpass and cosmic binary stellar evolution codes. We track their dynamical evolution within their host galaxy potential, to estimate the galactocentric distance at the time of the merger. Finally, we apply observational selection criteria to allow comparison of this model population with the legacy sample of SGRBs. We find a reasonable agreement with the redshift distribution (peaking at 0.5 < z < 1), host morphologies, and projected galactocentric offsets (modal impact parameter ≲10 kpc). Depending on the binary simulation used, we predict $\sim 16\!-\!35{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of SGRB events would appear ‘host-less’, i.e. sources that merge with high impact parameters or have hosts fainter than the detection limit (H > 26).
Three experiments were conducted to examine the effects of injectable trace minerals (ITM) on measures of trace mineral status and performance in pre- and postweaned Brangus-crossbred beef calves. In ...Exp. 1, calves were assigned to treatments in alternating birth order (n = 150; 75/treatment), consisting of a 1-mL subcutaneous injection of ITM (MultiMin 90; MultiMin USA, Inc., Fort Collins, CO) or sterile saline. The ITM formulation consisted of 60, 10, 15, and 5 mg/mL of Zn, Mn, Cu, and Se. Treatments were readministered at 100 and 200 d of age. Calf BW was recorded at birth and on d 100, 150, 200, and 250 (weaning). Trace mineral status was assessed in liver biopsy samples (n = 12/treatment) collected on d 150, 200, and 250. Administration of ITM had no impact on BW gain (P ≥ 0.55) but did result in greater (P ≤ 0.02) concentrations of liver Cu and Se and lesser (P = 0.05) liver Fe concentrations compared to saline-injected calves. In Exp. 2, 24 heifers were selected from the weaned calves of Exp. 1 (n = 12/treatment) and transported 1,600 km. Remaining on their original treatments, heifers were administered 5 mL of ITM or saline following transport (d 0). Blood samples, for acute phase protein (APP) analysis, were collected on d 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 13 and liver biopsy samples for assessment of trace mineral status on d 13. Plasma APP concentrations increased in all calves following weaning and transport but concentrations were greatest (P < 0.05) in ITM- vs. saline-injected heifers on d 6 and 9. Liver concentrations of Cu, Se, and Zn were greater (P ≤ 0.04) but ADG lesser (P = 0.05) for heifers receiving ITM vs. saline. In Exp. 3, 34 heifers, without previous exposure to ITM, were enrolled in a 177-d development study (n = 17/treatment). Treatments consisted of 2.5-mL injections of ITM or sterile saline on d 0, 51, and 127. Humoral immune response to an injection of porcine red blood cells (PRBC) was evaluated on d 51. Trace mineral status was evaluated in liver biopsy samples collected on d 177. Overall heifer ADG, PRBC antibody titers, and liver Se concentrations were greatest (P ≤ 0.06) for ITM vs. control heifers. Collectively, these studies demonstrate an increased trace mineral status, a greater humoral response to novel antigen, and a heightened APP response to weaning and transport stress in pre- and postweaned beef calves administered ITM.

GRB 201015A is a peculiarly low luminosity, spectrally soft gamma-ray burst (GRB), with T90 = 9.8 ± 3.5 s (time interval of detection of 90 per cent of photons from the GRB), and an ...associated supernova (likely to be type Ic or Ic-BL). GRB 201015A has an isotropic energy $E_{\gamma , \rm iso}$$= 1.75 ^{+0.60} _{-0.53} \times 10^{50}$ erg, and photon index $\Gamma = 3.00 ^{+0.50} _{-0.42}$ (15–150 keV). It follows the Amati relation, a correlation between $E_{\gamma , \rm iso}$ and spectral peak energy Ep followed by long GRBs. It appears exceptionally soft based on Γ, the hardness ratio of HR = 0.47 ± 0.24, and low-Ep, so we have compared it to other GRBs sharing these properties. These events can be explained by shock breakout, poorly collimated jets, and off-axis viewing. Follow-up observations of the afterglow taken in the X-ray, optical, and radio reveal a surprisingly late flattening in the X-ray from t = (2.61 ± 1.27) × 104 s to $t = 1.67 ^{+1.14} _{-0.65} \times 10^6$ s. We fit the data to closure relations describing the synchrotron emission, finding the electron spectral index to be $p = 2.42 ^{+0.44} _{-0.30}$ and evidence of late-time energy injection with coefficient $q = 0.24 ^{+0.24} _{-0.18}$. The jet half opening angle lower limit (θj ≥ 16°) is inferred from the non-detection of a jet break. The launch of SVOM and Einstein Probe in 2023 should enable detection of more low-luminosity events like this, providing a fuller picture of the variety of GRBs.
Influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) are known to associate with lipid rafts, membrane microdomains comprised of densely packed cholesterol and sphingolipids. These specialized ...membrane regions are believed to be involved in the budding of many enveloped viruses including influenza virus. Quantitative analysis of HA distribution on the surface of virus-infected cells by immunogold staining shows an organization into clusters that grow in size as the expression level of HA increases with time post-infection (p.i.) (∼325–500 nm at 4 h p.i. and ∼425–600 nm at 6 h p.i.). These HA-containing clusters are likely derived from lipid rafts as they contain a high density of the raft marker ganglioside GM1 and are dependent upon the presence of cholesterol. The clustering of HA is an intrinsic property of the HA protein and occurs in the absence of expression of other viral proteins. NA is also found sequestered within the same microdomains as HA, whereas the M2 ion channel protein does not concentrate within the raft-like microdomains. Quantification of the distribution of surface expressed HA by examining serial sections of virus-infected cells suggests that the HA-containing microdomains give rise to regions of influenza assembly and budding.

The prevention of unwanted heterogeneous crystal growth, known as scale formation, requires accurate detection of the rate and amount of scale deposition on surfaces. An Intrinsic Exposed Core Optical Fibre Sensor (IECOFS) has been used to measure heterogeneous crystal growth kinetic parameters, such as the rate of crystal growth and the induction time. Measurements at different temperatures allowed the activation energy to be determined for three crystal types, with excellent agreement with literature values. Crystal growth kinetic parameters were determined for calcium carbonate with the IECOFS and were found to compare well with kinetic parameters extracted from crystal growth measurements on a stainless steel surface. Crystal growth kinetic measurements were also performed in the presence of a poly-acrylic-acid (PAA) crystal growth inhibitor. The IECOFS monitored a reduction in the crystal growth rate and an increase in the induction time, matching well with the expected behaviour of the PAA inhibitor and agreeing with a literature model of crystal growth.
Lipid raft microdomains are enriched in sphingomyelin and cholesterol and function as platforms for signal transduction and as the site of budding of several enveloped viruses, including influenza ...virus. The influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein, which mediates both viral-cell attachment and membrane fusion, associates intrinsically with lipid rafts. Residues in the HA transmembrane (TM) domain are important for raft association as sequence substitutions in the HA TM domain ablate HA association with rafts (nonraft HA). Cells expressing either WT or nonraft HA cause complete fusion (lipid mixing and content mixing) over widely varying HA expression levels. However, the number of fusion events measured for nonraft HA mutant protein at all HA surface densities was reduced to ≈55% of the events for WT HA protein. Mutant influenza viruses were generated that contain the nonraft HA TM domain alterations. Electron microscopy experiments showed that WT HA was distributed at the cell surface in clusters of 200-280 nm in diameter, whereas nonraft HA was distributed mostly randomly at the plasma membrane. Nonraft HA virus showed reduced budding, contained reduced amounts of HA protein, was greatly reduced in infectivity, and exhibited decreased virus-membrane fusion activity. Cholesterol depletion of virus did not affect the ability of virions to cause either virus-cell lipid mixing or virus-mediated hemolysis, a surrogate for content mixing. Taken together, the data suggest that HA clusters in rafts to provide a sufficient concentration of HA in budding virus to mediate efficient virus-cell fusion.

Introduction. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) predisposes to a 10‐ to 20‐fold increased cardiovascular risk. Patients undergo accelerated atherogenesis and vascular ageing. We investigated whether ...telomere attrition, a marker of cell senescence, contributes to this increased mortality risk.
Methods. This is a cross‐sectional study in prevalent haemodialysis patients n = 175; 98 Males; median (range) age: 66 (23–86) years. Biochemical markers of oxidative stress and inflammatory status were measured in relation to the patient’s leucocyte telomere length. Overall mortality was assessed after a median of 31 (range 2–42) months.
Results. Telomere length was shorter in CKD men, despite women being older (average ± SD 6.41 ± 1.23 vs. 6.96 ± 1.48 kb, P = 0.002). Telomere length was associated with age (rho = −0.18, P = 0.01), fetuin‐A (rho = 0.26, P = 0.0004), high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein (rho = −0.21, P = 0.005) and IL‐6 (rho = −0.17, P = 0.02). In a multivariate logistic regression (pseudo r2 = 0.14), telomere length was associated with age >65 years (odds ratio: 2.11; 95% CI: 1.10, 4.06), sex (2.01; 1.05, 3.86), fetuin‐A (1.85; 0.97, 3.50) and white blood cell count (2.04; 1.02, 4.09). Receiver operating characteristic curves identified a telomere length < 6.28 kb as a fair predictor of mortality. Finally, reduced telomere length was associated with increased mortality, independently of age, gender and inflammation (likelihood ratio 41.6, P < 0.0001), but dependently on fetuin‐A levels.
Conclusion. Age and male gender seem to be important contributors to reduced telomere length in CKD patients, possibly via persistent inflammation. Reduced telomere length also contributes to the mortality risk of these patients through pathways that could involve circulating levels of fetuin‐A.
Direct mortality of wildlife is generally used to quantify the damage caused by pollution events. However, free-ranging wildlife that survive initial exposure to pollutants may also experience ...long-term consequences. Individuals that are rehabilitated following oil exposure have a known history of oiling and provide a useful study population for understanding behavior following pollution events. We GPS-tracked 12 rehabilitated brown pelicans and compared their movements to those of eight non-oiled, non-rehabilitated controls over 87–707 (mean = 271) days. Rehabilitated pelicans traveled farther, spent more time in long-distance movements, and occupied more productive waters than controls. These differences were more apparent among females than males. Rehabilitated pelicans also visited breeding colonies and nest sites at lower rates than controls. Our results indicate that, although rehabilitated pelicans undertake long-distance movements, they may display increased dispersion and reduced breeding investment, particularly among females. Such behavioral changes could have long-term effects on populations.
