Background
Body mass index (BMI) is often used to diagnose obesity in childhood and adolescence but has limitations as an index of obesity‐related morbidity. The Edmonton Obesity Staging ...System for Pediatrics (EOSS‐P) is a clinical staging system that uses weight‐related comorbidities to determine health risk in paediatric populations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations of EOSS‐P and BMI percentile with quality of life (QOL), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscular strength in adolescents with obesity.
Methods
Participants were enrolled at baseline in the Healthy Eating, Aerobic and Resistance Training in Youth trial (BMI = 34.6 ± 4.5 kg m−2, age = 15.6 ± 1.4 years, N = 299). QOL, CRF (peak oxygen uptake, VO2peak) and muscular strength were assessed by the Pediatric QOL Inventory (PedsQL), indirect calorimetry during a maximal treadmill test and eight‐repetition maximum bench and leg press tests, respectively. Participants were staged from 0 to 3 (absent to severe health risk) according to EOSS‐P. Associations were assessed using age‐adjusted and sex‐adjusted general linear models.
Results
Quality of life decreased with increasing EOSS‐P stages (p < 0.001). QOL was 75.7 ± 11.4 in stage 0/1, 69.1 ± 13.1 in stage 2 and 55.4 ± 13.0 in stage 3. BMI percentile was associated with VO2peak (β = –0.044 mlO2 kg−1 min−1 per unit increase in BMI percentile, p < 0.001), bench press (β = 0.832 kg per unit increase in BMI percentile, p = 0.029) and leg press (β = 3.992 kg, p = 0.003). There were no significant differences in treadmill time or VO2peak between EOSS‐P stages (p > 0.05).
Conclusion
As EOSS‐P stages increase, QOL decreases. BMI percentile was negatively associated with CRF and positively associated with muscular strength.
To track progress towards keeping global warming well below 2 ∘C or even 1.5 ∘C, as agreed in the Paris Agreement, comprehensive up-to-date and reliable information on anthropogenic emissions and ...removals of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is required. Here we compile a new synthetic dataset on anthropogenic GHG emissions for 1970–2018 with a fast-track extension to 2019. Our dataset is global in coverage and includes CO2 emissions, CH4 emissions, N2O emissions, as well as those from fluorinated gases (F-gases: HFCs, PFCs, SF6, NF3) and provides country and sector details. We build this dataset from the version 6 release of the Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR v6) and three bookkeeping models for CO2 emissions from land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF). We assess the uncertainties of global greenhouse gases at the 90 % confidence interval (5th–95th percentile range) by combining statistical analysis and comparisons of global emissions inventories and top-down atmospheric measurements with an expert judgement informed by the relevant scientific literature. We identify important data gaps for F-gas emissions. The agreement between our bottom-up inventory estimates and top-down atmospheric-based emissions estimates is relatively close for some F-gas species (∼ 10 % or less), but estimates can differ by an order of magnitude or more for others. Our aggregated F-gas estimate is about 10 % lower than top-down estimates in recent years. However, emissions from excluded F-gas species such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are cumulatively larger than the sum of the reported species. Using global warming potential values with a 100-year time horizon from the Sixth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global GHG emissions in 2018 amounted to 58 ± 6.1 GtCO2 eq. consisting of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion and industry (FFI) 38 ± 3.0 GtCO2, CO2-LULUCF 5.7 ± 4.0 GtCO2, CH4 10 ± 3.1 GtCO2 eq., N2O 2.6 ± 1.6 GtCO2 eq., and F-gases 1.3 ± 0.40 GtCO2 eq. Initial estimates suggest further growth of 1.3 GtCO2 eq. in GHG emissions to reach 59 ± 6.6 GtCO2 eq. by 2019. Our analysis of global trends in anthropogenic GHG emissions over the past 5 decades (1970–2018) highlights a pattern of varied but sustained emissions growth. There is high confidence that global anthropogenic GHG emissions have increased every decade, and emissions growth has been persistent across the different (groups of) gases. There is also high confidence that global anthropogenic GHG emissions levels were higher in 2009–2018 than in any previous decade and that GHG emissions levels grew throughout the most recent decade. While the average annual GHG emissions growth rate slowed between 2009 and 2018 (1.2 % yr−1) compared to 2000–2009 (2.4 % yr−1), the absolute increase in average annual GHG emissions by decade was never larger than between 2000–2009 and 2009–2018. Our analysis further reveals that there are no global sectors that show sustained reductions in GHG emissions. There are a number of countries that have reduced GHG emissions over the past decade, but these reductions are comparatively modest and outgrown by much larger emissions growth in some developing countries such as China, India, and Indonesia. There is a need to further develop independent, robust, and timely emissions estimates across all gases. As such, tracking progress in climate policy requires substantial investments in independent GHG emissions accounting and monitoring as well as in national and international statistical infrastructures. Surface, or heterogeneous crystallisation processes, also known as scale formation, has been monitored directly using an intrinsic, exposed core optical fibre sensor (IECOFS). Optical attenuation was ...found to be linearly correlated with scale layer height and average crystal contact area and the optical signal was found to be restored following chemical removal of deposited crystals (without physical intervention). The IECOFS was found to be insensitive to bulk-solution (homogenous) crystallisation processes, making it a potentially powerful tool for the study of heterogeneous-only crystallisation processes. Kinetic parameters extracted from the obtained crystallisation measurements showed that the IECOFS is capable of providing a reliable means of monitoring surface crystal growth.
We present high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of two recent g-ray burst (GRB) afterglows observed with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on Chandra. The afterglows to GRBs 030328 and ...041006 are detected beginning 15.33 and 16.8 hr after each burst, respectively, and are observed to fade in time during each 690 ks observation. We fit for the continuum emission in each full data set and for the data sliced into half and quarter time sections. For both afterglows, the continuum emission is well described by an absorbed power-law model, and the model parameters describing the absorption and spectral slope do not appear to evolve in time. We perform a careful search for deviations from the model continua for the full and time-sliced data and find no evidence for significant ( 3 s) narrow emission/absorption lines or edges. The lack of detections implies that line emission--if it is a general feature in GRB X-ray afterglows--occurs early (t 6 0.3 days in the source frame) and/or is short-lived (dt 10 ks). We also comment on synchrotron fireball models for the X-ray and optical data.

= 4.9. This suggests extinction above the notional Galactic value, possibly due to patchy extinction within the Milky Way or dust in the GRB host galaxy. It further implies that the X-ray and optical/IR regimes are not on the same segment of the synchrotron spectrum of the afterglow. If the cooling break lies between the X-ray and optical/IR, then the temporal decay rates would only match a post-jet-break model, with electron index
p
< 2, and with the jet expanding into a uniform ISM medium. The shape of the JWST spectrum is near-identical in the optical/near-IR to X-SHOOTER spectroscopy obtained at 0.5 days and to later time observations with HST. The lack of spectral evolution suggests that any accompanying supernova (SN) is either substantially fainter or bluer than SN 1998bw, the proto-type GRB-SN. Our HST observations also reveal a disk-like host galaxy, viewed close to edge-on, that further complicates the isolation of any SN component. The host galaxy appears rather typical among long-GRB hosts and suggests that the extreme properties of GRB 221009A are not directly tied to its galaxy-scale environment.
Hepatitis B virus, a widespread and serious human pathogen, replicates by reverse transcription of an RNA intermediate. The virus consists of an inner nucleocapsid or core, surrounded by a lipid ...envelope containing virally encoded surface proteins. Using electron cryomicroscopy, we compare the structures of the bacterially expressed RNA-containing core particle and the mature DNA-containing core particle extracted from virions. We show that the mature core contains 240 subunits in a T = 4 arrangement similar to that in expressed core (T is the triangulation number and the icosahedral shell contains 60 T subunits). During the infective cycle, the core assembles in an immature state around a complex of viral pregenomic RNA and polymerase. After reverse transcription with concomitant degradation of the RNA, the now mature core buds through a cellular membrane containing the surface proteins to become enveloped. Envelopment must not happen before reverse transcription is completed, so it has been hypothesized that a change in capsid structure may signal maturation. Our results show significant differences in structure between the RNA- and DNA-containing cores. One such difference is in a hydrophobic pocket, formed largely from residues that, on mutation, lead to abnormal secretion. We suggest that the changes we see are related to maturation and control of envelopment, and we propose a mechanism based on DNA synthesis for their triggering.
Three experiments were conducted to examine the effects of injectable trace minerals (ITM) on measures of trace mineral status and performance in pre- and postweaned Brangus-crossbred beef calves. In ...Exp. 1, calves were assigned to treatments in alternating birth order (n = 150; 75/treatment), consisting of a 1-mL subcutaneous injection of ITM (MultiMin 90; MultiMin USA, Inc., Fort Collins, CO) or sterile saline. The ITM formulation consisted of 60, 10, 15, and 5 mg/ mL of Zn, Mn, Cu, and Se. Treatments were readministered at 100 and 200 d of age. Calf BW was recorded at birth and on d 100, 150, 200, and 250 (weaning). Trace mineral status was assessed in liver biopsy samples (n = 12/treatment) collected on d 150, 200, and 250. Administration of ITM had no impact on BW gain (P ≥ 0.55) but did result in greater (P ≤ 0.02) concentrations of liver Cu and Se and lesser (P = 0.05) liver Fe concentrations compared to saline-injected calves. In Exp. 2, 24 heifers were selected from the weaned calves of Exp. 1 (n = 12/treatment) and transported 1,600 km. Remaining on their original treatments, heifers were administered 5 mL of ITM or saline following transport (d 0). Blood samples, for acute phase protein (APP) analysis, were collected on d 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 13 and liver biopsy samples for assessment of trace mineral status on d 13. Plasma APP concentrations increased in all calves following weaning and transport but concentrations were greatest (P < 0.05) in ITM- vs. saline-injected heifers on d 6 and 9. Liver concentrations of Cu, Se, and Zn were greater (P ≤ 0.04) but ADG lesser (P = 0.05) for heifers receiving ITM vs. saline. In Exp. 3, 34 heifers, without previous exposure to ITM, were enrolled in a 177-d development study (n = 17/treatment). Treatments consisted of 2.5-mL injections of ITM or sterile saline on d 0, 51, and 127. Humoral immune response to an injection of porcine red blood cells (PRBC) was evaluated on d 51. Trace mineral status was evaluated in liver biopsy samples collected on d 177. Overall heifer ADG, PRBC antibody titers, and liver Se concentrations were greatest (P ≤ 0.06) for ITM vs. control heifers. Collectively, these studies demonstrate an increased trace mineral status, a greater humoral response to novel antigen, and a heightened APP response to weaning and transport stress in pre- and postweaned beef calves administered ITM.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessments are the trusted source of scientific evidence for climate negotiations taking place under the United Nations Framework Convention on ...Climate Change (UNFCCC), including the first global stocktake under the Paris Agreement that will conclude at COP28 in December 2023. Evidence-based decision-making needs to be informed by up-to-date and timely information on key indicators of the state of the climate system and of the human influence on the global climate system. However, successive IPCC reports are published at intervals of 5-10 years, creating potential for an information gap between report cycles.
