O método imunocitoquímico de peroxidase anti-peroxídase é aplicado, pela primeira vez, em tecidos de natimorto macerado de II-III graus para coloração específica de amastigotas do Trypanosoma cruzi, ...em caso de doença de Chagas congênita. Os resultados mostram que o encontro de ninhos de amastigotas é muito facilitado pelo método, mesmo em tecidos autolisados, onde a morfologia dos parasitas geralmente se mostra muito alterada; o método é recomendável, também nestes casos, para a avaliação mais precisa da intensidade do parasitismo.
To verify changes in placental morphology of small for gestational age newborns, considering that the occurrence of placental alterations is more frequent in small for gestational age (SGA) infants ...than in appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants.
Fifty SGA newborns were included in a cross-sectional study, which involved gross anatomy and light microscopy of placenta, membranes and umbilical cord. An equal size sample of randomized AGA newborns was used. All children were born at Maternidade Terezinha de Jesus, Juiz de Fora-MG, between February and November, 1996. After an informed consent was given by the mothers, the newborns were weighted at birth with assessment of length and head circumference. Every child's placenta, membranes and umbilical cord were sent to the laboratory of histology and embryology of the Department of Morphology of Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora and Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.
Placentas of SGA newborns differed significantly with greater incidence of chorioamnionitis, placental infarction, extensive perivillous fibrin deposition and multiple foci of parabasal chronic villitis. They were also lighter and had smaller diameters. Placentary index (placental weight/newborńs weight ratio) was also significantly greater, indicating that although both placenta and small for gestational age newborn presented low weight, placentas impairment was smaller.

Myc and other basic-helix-loop-helix-leucine zipper (b-HLH-ZIP) proteins bind the sequence CACGTG. Exhaustive mutagenesis in the basic domain identified four amino acids critical for DNA binding with ...spacing suggestive of an alpha-helical face. Surprisingly, two highly conserved amino acids were nonessential for DNA binding. Circular dichroism demonstrated a DNA-induced alpha-helical transition. A series of analogs were constructed with multiple simultaneous alanine substitutions at nonessential positions and a critical lysine for arginine substitution. In this way 35-fold higher specific affinity for CACGTG was obtained as compared with the basic domain of c-Myc. These b-HLH-ZIP proteins appear to bind the same palindromic sequence and may compete for common sites in vivo. Additionally, a C-terminal basic region clamp motif was identified that was also identifiable in crystal structures from several different families of DNA-binding factors.
Avaliou-se o efeito da adição de diferentes níveis de óleo de milho sobre a digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes da dieta de 28 eqüinos com idade e peso entre seis e 10 anos e 400 e 500kg, ...respectivamente. A dieta, composta de feno de coast cross(Cynodon dactylon) e ração comercial, foi oferecida na proporção de 2% do peso do animal e a quantidade oferecida foi calculada a cada pesagem, sendo 50% de concentrado e 50% de feno. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e sete repetições, sendo T1, T2, T3 e T4 correspondentes à adição de 0, 250, 500, 750ml de óleo no concentrado diário ou 0, 2,9, 5,7 e 8,3 % de óleo na dieta total, respectivamente, e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste t de Student. A adição de óleo na dieta dos eqüinos não alterou a digestibilidade da matéria seca, proteína bruta, fibra detergente neutra e fibra detergente ácida e aumentou a digestibilidade da energia bruta e do extrato etéreo, indicando que é possível adicionar até 750ml de óleo de milho no concentrado diário dos eqüinos (8,3% na dieta total) por um período de até 23 dias, visando aumentar o nível energético da dieta sem o correspondente aumento no fornecimento de matéria seca.A digestibility trial was carried out in a completely randomized design with five treatments and seven replicates to compare the effects of different levels of dietary corn oil (0, 250, 500, 750ml) on nutrient apparent digestibility in horses. Twenty eight animals with age between six and 10 years and weight between 400kg and 500kg were used. The diet composition was based on coast cross hay (Cynodon dactylon) and commercial concentrate. The feed dry matter was based on 2% of body weight and 1:1 forage concentrate ratio. The treatment means were compared by Student's test, at 5% level. Increasing corn oil level in the diet did not affect dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber apparent digestibility, however increased the ether extract and crude energy apparent digestibility. The results showed that 750ml of corn oil can be added to the daily concentrate of equine (8.3% in the total diet) until 23 days to increase the energetic level of the diet without a corresponding increase in the dry matter.

The clinical picture of 67 consecutive patients with definite multiple sclerosis in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, was analysed. There were 20 patients with the predominant optic-spinal form of the disease ...and eight with Devic's disease. Visual loss occurred in 43% of the cases as the presenting symptom and in 84% in the course of the illness. Symptoms related to spinal cord and cerebellar involvement were observed in 64% and 52% respectively. The high prevalence of visual and spinal abnormalities at onset and during the course of the illness, the lesser common involvement of the cerebellum and the relative frequency of Devic's disease make multiple sclerosis in Brazil similar to that observed in Eastern countries in distinction to the clinical pattern seen in the United States and Europe.
This paper focuses on the control developing for directly connected energy storage (ES) in diesel electric vessel drives and on analysis of the application benefits. The energy storage reduces load ...variations of diesel and generator. This can lead to fuel consumption savings, especially during dynamic positioning mode of offshore supply vessel. Energy storage can be connected to vessel AC power network by power electronics, which means additional losses on energy transfer upon charging and discharging. The other more effective way is to connect energy storage directly to the DC link of the propulsion drives. In this case, the DC link voltage level must be controlled to charge and discharge ES according to generator power and drive load. The aim of the control is to keep generation output in optimal fuel consumption range of the prime mover with keeping up the energy storage state of charge. The control is developed using power distribution network model of the offshore support vessel in MATLAB/Simulink environment. DC and AC power distribution network concepts with directly connected ES are evaluated. Gains and benefits of controlled and directly connected ES on variation of generation and diesel fuel consumption is discussed in the paper.
