Fundamento.

The results have shown that the immunocytochemical method markedly improved the identijication o f the tissue parasitism when compared with the hematoxylin and eosin stain, even in advanced autolysed tissues.
The authors assessed the relationships of ethnicity, gender, previous condom use, and intended condom use to perceived attributes of the condom and the contraceptive pill in a multiethnic sample of ...197 college students. Factors that appeared to underlie attitudes toward the condom and the Pill included prevention of health problems, peer acceptance, sexual pleasure and spontaneity, convenience, embarrassment, and effectiveness in preventing HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. African American participants viewed the condom more positively than did students from other ethnic groups and were more likely to use condoms than White participants were. The African Americans appeared to know less about the characteristics of the Pill and were less likely to use it than were the White respondents. Only 60% of the persons in the student sample had used condoms in the last 6 months, and less than one half definitely intended to use condoms in the next month. Those who had used a condom at their most recent intercourse and those who intended to use a condom in the next month viewed the condom more favorably than others did. Intended condom use was associated with a perception of oral contraceptives as a less convenient method of birth control.
As Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) may clinically mimic multiple sclerosis (MS) the presence of antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi in serum of patients with a MS-like disease in non-endemic areas for ...Lyme disease may be troublesome. We report the case of a 45-year-old white female with the diagnosis of relapsing/remitting form of MS due to a 15-year history of optic neuritis and recurrent episodes of motor and sensation disturbance in the upper right limb and in both lower extremities associated with bladder dysfunction. A magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed multiple high intensity periventricular white matter lesions. The patient had been exposed to ticks but did not recall the presence of erythema migrans. ELISA for Lyme disease was positive in two different laboratories and the positive serology was confirmed by Western blotting. No convincing response followed treatment with ceftriaxone. Although it is clear that the patient had been infect by Borrelia burgdorferi the relationship of this spirochetal infection with the neurological disease could not be ascertained.
In this paper the implementation of the galvanic isolation in the low voltage direct current (LVDC) network is discussed. The galvanic isolation can be implemented either with a 50 Hz transformer ...located at the customer AC output of the customer-end inverter (CEI) or with an isolated DC-DC converter at the input DC network side of the CEI. However, the former solution results in a significant increase of the volume and mass of the system and has a high amount of no-load losses. Therefore, an isolated DC-DC converter is studied in this paper. Based on calorimetric measurements conducted for the passive 50 Hz transformer, the requirements for the DC-DC converter are set. Selection of the converter topology is carried out and the selected topology is studied by simulations and calculations. The results are compared with the 50 Hz transformer.
To evaluate the prevalence and factors associated to neural tube defects in liveborn and stillborn infants delivered at the Hospital das Clínicas, UFMG, from January 8, 1999 to July 31, 2000.
This is ...a descriptive study, based on a database, according to the Latin-American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformation (ECLAMC) rules. Reports on liveborn and stillborn infants with congenital anomalies were prepared including information about morphological description, necropsy results, complementary exams, family, social and pregnancy histories and other clinical data. Each malformed liveborn infant originated a control of the same sex, without malformations. The liveborn and stillborn infants with neural tube defects delivered during that period were classified according to their defect and the presence or absence of associated defects. The liveborn and stillborn infants with neural tube defects were compared to newborns without neural tube defects according to their weight and sex and their mother's age and parity. Epi-Info 6.0 Program was used for the statistical analysis of the results.
The prevalence of neural tube defects was 4.73 to 1,000 deliveries (89:18,807); it was significantly higher among stillborn infants (23.7:1,000) than among liveborn infants (4.16:1,000), p < 0.001. Neural tube defects were more often found among low weight liveborn infants (< or = 2,500 g), p < 0.001 and less frequently among women who had had more than three gestations, p = 0.007. No association was found regarding newborn's sex or maternal age. There was no association with newborn's sex and weight, maternal parity or age among stillborn infants. The most common neural tube defects were myelomeningocele (47.2%), anencephaly (26.9%) and encephalocele (16.9%). The defects were found as isolated anomalies in 71.1% of the liveborn and 38.5% of the stillborn infants; they were part of a syndrome in 9.2% (liveborn) and 7.7% (stillborn).
The neural tube defect prevalence found in this study was higher than the one described in international and Latin-American literature.
Colloidal silicalite-1 zeolite was crystallized from a concentrated clear sol prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and aqueous tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) solution at 95 degree C. ...The silicate speciation was monitored by using dynamic light scattering (DLS), synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and quantitative liquid-state super(29)Si NMR spectroscopy. The silicon atoms were present in dissolved oligomers, two discrete nanoparticle populations approximately 2 and 6nm in size, and crystals. On the basis of new insight into the evolution of the different nanoparticle populations and of the silicate connectivity in the nanoparticles, a refined crystallization mechanism was derived. Upon combining the reagents, different types of nanoparticles (ca. 2 nm) are formed. A fraction of these nanoparticles with the least condensed silicate structure does not participate in the crystallization process. After completion of the crystallization, they represent the residual silicon atoms. Nanoparticles with a more condensed silicate network grow until approximately 6nm and evolve into building blocks for nucleation and growth of the silicalite-1 crystals. The silicate network connectivity of nanoparticles suitable for nucleation and growth increasingly resembles that of the final zeolite. This new insight into the two classes of nanoparticles will be useful to tune the syntheses of silicalite-1 for maximum yield. Fit nanoparticles: Nanoparticles employed in the synthesis of silicalite-1 zeolite undergo differentiation of the silicate framework connectivity and size during the induction stage. Larger nanoparticles (6nm) with a highly connected silicate framework (see picture; dark-gray particles) are units for nucleation and aggregative crystal growth, whereas smaller nanoparticles (2nm; see picture; light-gray particles) do not participate in the crystallization.
