A high degree of in-flight availability of an Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) must be assured to allow Extravehicular Activity (EVA) to become a routine operation, to minimize life cycle costs, ...and to support long duration missions. The ability to maintain an Advanced EMU and other equipment in flight will be of primary importance in achieving these high availability requirements while minimizing onboard spares quantities and resupply costs. This paper presents an analytical assessment of the advantages of in-flight maintainability in providing continued EMU availability for space-based operations by use of modular assemblies and components.
While membrane proteins are the subject of much concern, there remains a need to develop generally applicable methods for solubilizing, purifying, and reconstituting such proteins. This chapter ...describes the continuing development of an experimental approach to membrane protein structural determination, and emphasizes on the development of methods of particular relevance to the handling of smaller bitopic (single span) trans-membrane peptides. Although, none of these polypeptides can be regarded as particularly good models for natural biotopic membrane proteins, solvent systems which are successful in solubilizing these peptides will likely prove effective in solubilizing more conventional membrane proteins. The aim of the screening studies described in the chapter is to identify solvent systems that will afford appropriate elution characteristics, while at the same time promoting high post-column yield by preventing on- or pre-column peptide aggregation. While, the TLC results discussed have yet to be extended to column chromatography, it is hoped that they may provide the foundation for future work.
The authors describe two patients with Munchausen syndrome who met DSM-III criteria for major depression. Both patients exhibited evidence of nonsuppression of serum cortisol by dexamethasone. ...Although many patients with Munchausen syndrome have been reported to be depressed, only a few have received a diagnosis of major depression. Because the physical and psychiatric symptoms of the Munchausen patient are so complex, clinical assessment may stop at a diagnosis of Munchausen syndrome, and major depression may be overlooked. A diagnosis of major depression should be considered in the evaluation of these patients; the dexamethasone suppression test may enhance clinical assessment.
Trauma to the patient with an implanted cardiac pacemaker can result in serious damage to the device. We have described a case in which the lead was fractured after accidental electric shock. ...Recognition that trauma is a possible cause of pacemaker malfunction is critical to proper evaluation and prompt treatment of this potentially lethal complication.
We conducted a prospective open pilot study of 34 consecutively admitted patients with the DSM-III diagnosis of MD who were admitted to a general psychiatric unit. Patients underwent a 1 mg DST and ...were randomly assigned to treatment with either maprotiline or trazodone. Antidepressant dosages were increased as tolerated clinically and according to treatment response.
mean final oral doses were 193 mg for maprotiline and 328 mg for trazodone. The mean treatment duration was 4.5 weeks for maprotiline and 5.9 weeks for the trazodone group. Of these 34 patients 44% showed DST nonsuppression (41% maprotiline, 45% trazodone). Seventy-six per cent of the patients responded to treatment (76% for both drugs) as defined by GAS. Eighty-seven per cent of the nonsuppressors responded to treatment (86% maprotiline, 88% trazodone) and 68% of the suppressors responded (70% maprotiline, 67% trazodone). Of the eight treatment nonresponders six showed DST suppression. The implications of these findings are discussed.
Describes a step-by-step group treatment approach for mothers of incestuous families. The ten sessions provide support, help mothers identify protective plans for their children, and teach ...alternatives for handling significant relationships. (JAC)
