Current hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel systems often cause cytotoxicity to encapsulated cells and lack the adhesive property required for effective localization of transplanted cells in vivo. In ...addition, the injection of hydrogel into certain organs (e.g., liver, heart) induces tissue damage and hemorrhage. In this study, we describe a bioinspired, tissue‐adhesive hydrogel that overcomes the limitations of current HA hydrogels through its improved biocompatibility and potential for minimally invasive cell transplantation. HA functionalized with an adhesive catecholamine motif of mussel foot protein forms HA‐catechol (HA‐CA) hydrogel via oxidative crosslinking. HA‐CA hydrogel increases viability, reduces apoptosis, and enhances the function of two types of cells (human adipose‐derived stem cells and hepatocytes) compared with a typical HA hydrogel crosslinked by photopolymerization. Due to the strong tissue adhesiveness of the HA‐CA hydrogel, cells are easily and efficiently transplanted onto various tissues (e.g., liver and heart) without the need for injection. Stem cell therapy using the HA‐CA hydrogel increases angiogenesis in vivo, leading to improved treatment of ischemic diseases. HA‐CA hydrogel also improved hepatic functions of transplanted hepatocytes in vivo. Thus, this bioinspired, tissue‐adhesive HA hydrogel can enhance the efficacy of minimally invasive cell therapy.

Human skin is the largest organ and serves as the first line of defense against environmental factors. The human microbiota is defined as the total microbial community that coexists in the human ...body, while the microbiome refers to the collective genome of these microorganisms. Skin microbes do not simply reside on the skin but interact with the skin in a variety of ways, significantly affecting the skin barrier function. Here, we discuss recent insights into the symbiotic relationships between the microbiome and the skin barrier in physical, chemical, and innate/adaptive immunological ways. We discuss the gut-skin axis that affects skin barrier function. Finally, we examine the effects of microbiome dysbiosis on skin barrier function and the role of these effects in inflammatory skin diseases, such as acne, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. Microbiome cosmetics can help restore skin barrier function and improve these diseases.
An effective lane-detection algorithm is a fundamental component of an advanced driver assistant system, as it provides important information that supports driving safety. The challenges faced by the ...lane detection and tracking algorithm include the lack of clarity of lane markings, poor visibility due to bad weather, illumination and light reflection, shadows, and dense road-based instructions. In this paper, a robust and real-time vision-based lane detection algorithm with an efficient region of interest is proposed to reduce the high noise level and the calculation time. The proposed algorithm also processes a gradient cue and a color cue together and a line clustering with scan-line tests to verify the characteristics of the lane markings. It removes any false lane markings and tracks the real lane markings using the accumulated statistical data. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm gives accurate results and fulfills the real-time operation requirement on embedded systems with low computing power.

The future of psoriasis treatment shows promising emerging trends. New biologic agents targeting novel pathways, such as interleukin 23 inhibitors like mirikizumab, offer enhanced efficacy. Small molecule inhibitors like RORγt inhibitors and ROCK2 inhibitors provide additional treatment options. Combination therapies, including biologics with methotrexate, may improve treatment response. Advancements in topical treatments utilizing microneedles and nanoparticle-based carriers can enhance drug delivery and improve therapeutic outcomes. Biomarkers and multi-omics technologies hold potential for personalized treatment approaches, thus aiding in diagnosis, predicting treatment response, and guiding therapeutic decisions. Collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and industry stakeholders is crucial to translating these scientific breakthroughs into clinical practice. By addressing current challenges and exploring these promising trends, we can optimize psoriasis management and improve the lives of those affected by this chronic condition.
Sources, optical properties, and chemical composition of atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) aerosol are uncertain, making it challenging to estimate its contribution to radiative forcing. Furthermore, ...optical properties of BrC may change significantly during its atmospheric aging. We examined the effect of photolysis on the molecular composition, mass absorption coefficient, and fluorescence of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) prepared by high-NO x photooxidation of naphthalene (NAP SOA). Our experiments were designed to model photolysis processes of NAP SOA compounds dissolved in cloud or fog droplets. Aqueous solutions of NAP SOA were observed to photobleach (i.e., lose their ability to absorb visible radiation) with an effective half-life of ∼15 h (with sun in its zenith) for the loss of near-UV (300–400 nm) absorbance. The molecular composition of NAP SOA was significantly modified by photolysis, with the average SOA formula changing from C14.1H14.5O5.1N0.085 to C11.8H14.9O4.5N0.023 after 4 h of irradiation. However, the average O/C ratio did not change significantly, suggesting that it is not a good metric for assessing the extent of photolysis-driven aging in NAP SOA (and in BrC in general). In contrast to NAP SOA, the photobleaching of BrC material produced by the reaction of limonene + ozone SOA with ammonia vapor (aged LIM/O3 SOA) was much faster, but it did not result in a significant change in average molecular composition. The characteristic absorbance of the aged LIM/O3 SOA in the 450–600 nm range decayed with an effective half-life of <0.5 h. These results emphasize the highly variable and dynamic nature of different types of atmospheric BrC.
Multicellular 3D culture and interaction with stromal components are considered essential elements in establishing a 'more clinically relevant' tumor model. Matrix-embedded 3D cultures using a ...microfluidic chip platform can recapitulate the microscale interaction within tumor microenvironments. As a major component of tumor microenvironment, cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play a role in cancer progression and drug resistance. Here, we present a microfluidic chip-based tumor tissue culture model that integrates 3D tumor spheroids (TSs) with CAF in proximity within a hydrogel scaffold. HT-29 human colorectal carcinoma cells grew into 3D TSs and the growth was stimulated when co-cultured with fibroblasts as shown by 1.5-folds increase of % changes in diameter over 5 days. TS cultured for 6 days showed a reduced expression of Ki-67 along with increased expression of fibronectin when co-cultured with fibroblasts compared to mono-cultured TSs. Fibroblasts were activated under co-culture conditions, as demonstrated by increases in α-SMA expression and migratory activity. When exposed to paclitaxel, a survival advantage was observed in TSs co-cultured with activated fibroblasts. Overall, we demonstrated the reciprocal interaction between TSs and fibroblasts in our 7-channel microfluidic chip. The co-culture of 3D TS-CAF in a collagen matrix-incorporated microfluidic chip may be useful to study the tumor microenvironment and for evaluation of drug screening and evaluation.

However, when using additional dopants, the interaction between the unintentional tin and intentional dopant is poorly understood. Here, using germanium, we investigate how tin diffusion affects overall photoelectrochemical performance in germanium:tin co-doped systems. After revealing that germanium is a better dopant than tin, we develop a facile germanium-doping method which suppresses tin diffusion from the fluorine doped tin oxide substrate, significantly improving hematite performance. This study aimed to evaluate the association between sleep quality and quality of life (QoL).
This cross-sectional study included 225,541 adults (101,133 men, 124,408 women) who participated in the ...2018 Korean Community Health Survey. Multiple sociodemographic and psychosocial variables were evaluated and compared between participants with poor (n = 67,619) and good sleep quality (n = 157,922); sleep quality was subjectively determined using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The EuroQol five-dimension (EQ-5D) index scores were adjusted for multiple confounding factors and compared between the good and poor sleep quality groups. A logistic regression analysis was used to identify determinants of the lowest quartile of QoL.
The mean EQ-5D index scores were significantly lower in the poor sleep quality group (score 0.85) than in the good sleep quality group (score 0.92; p < 0.001). The multivariate odds ratio (OR) for the lowest quartile of the EQ-5D index scores in the poor sleep quality group versus that in the good sleep quality group was 1.95 (95% confidence interval CI, 1.89–2.00). Participants with poor sleep quality were more likely than those with good sleep quality to have some or severe problems with physical activity (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.41–1.51), self-control (OR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.29–1.42), daily activity (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.39–1.50), pain (OR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.77–1.86), and anxiety/depression (OR, 2.24; 95% CI, 2.17–2.31).

With the continuing increase in online communications, virtual proximity as well as physical proximity has become a common way to connect individuals. Virtual proximity refers to the psychological ...closeness felt by people based on their participation in a virtual space. Hence, augmenting physical proximity with virtual types is believed to enhance connectivity within social networks, and applications that consider both types have the capability to provide new forms of interaction. However, despite the importance of their coexistence, these proximity concepts have been studied separately or are being integrated using diverse terminologies that often lead to misunderstandings. Furthermore, although some applications reflect the two proximity types (e.g., location-based services), there is no metric of comparison. This paper proposes the concept of augmented proximity (AP), which combines physical and virtual forms into a network analogous to one of mixed reality (MR). The concept provides a clear distinction between physical and virtual proximity using a single quantitative value. Using this concept, a formal taxonomy is established to compare and evaluate AP-based networks. The taxonomy consists of three dimensions that can be analyzed using graph theory, including the extent of connectivity degree, diffusion effect, and extent of perceived closeness. Furthermore, using the services underlying AP-based network, the proposed taxonomy can be applied to evaluate the suitability of the services as an indicator for comparison. The results show that one of the two services has a higher taxonomy-based value, and a reasonable basis for selecting one based on proximity is established. This study suggests that AP will play an important role as a quantitative indicator in developing and comparing applications that consider proximity in both virtual and physical modes.
Rapid progress in the development of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies in recent years has provided many valuable insights into complex biological systems, ranging from cancer genomics to ...diverse microbial communities. NGS-based technologies for genomics, transcriptomics, and epigenomics are now increasingly focused on the characterization of individual cells. These single-cell analyses will allow researchers to uncover new and potentially unexpected biological discoveries relative to traditional profiling methods that assess bulk populations. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), for example, can reveal complex and rare cell populations, uncover regulatory relationships between genes, and track the trajectories of distinct cell lineages in development. In this review, we will focus on technical challenges in single-cell isolation and library preparation and on computational analysis pipelines available for analyzing scRNA-seq data. Further technical improvements at the level of molecular and cell biology and in available bioinformatics tools will greatly facilitate both the basic science and medical applications of these sequencing technologies.
