To overcome the limitations of the conventional vacuum thermoforming manufacturing method, direct 3D printing of clear aligners has been developed. The present study investigated the ...thermo-mechanical and viscoelastic properties of a photocurable resin TC-85, which is a new material for the direct 3D printed clear aligners, comparing to a conventional thermoplastic material polyethylene terephthalate glycol. Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed to analyse the mechanical behaviours of the two materials at 37 °C and 80 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the shape memory property of the two materials was evaluated using a U-shape bending test, and the shape recovery ratio for 60 min at 37 °C was calculated. The results indicate that TC-85 can constantly apply a light force to the teeth when used for the 3D printed clear aligners, owing to its flexibility and viscoelastic properties. In addition, it is expected that the force decay induced by repeated insertion of the clear aligners will be reduced and a constant orthodontic force will be maintained. Furthermore, its geometric stability at high temperatures and the shape memory properties provide advantages for the clinical application.
This study reports a new nonfullerene electron transporting material (ETM) based on naphthalene diimide (NDI) small molecules for use in high‐performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). These solar ...cells simultaneously achieve high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 20% and long‐term stability. New NDI‐ID (N,N′‐Bis(1‐indanyl)naphthalene‐1,4,5,8‐tetracarboxylic diimide) consisting of an N‐substituted indane group having simultaneous alicyclic and aromatic characteristics is synthesized by a low‐cost, one‐step reaction, and facile purification method. The partially flexible characteristics of an alicyclic cyclopentene group on indane groups open the possibility of low‐temperature solution processing. The conformational rigidity and aromaticity of phenyl and alicyclic groups contribute to high temporal stability by strong secondary bonds. NDI‐ID has herringbone packed semiconducting NDI cores that exhibit up to 0.2 cm2 V−1 s−1 electron mobility in field effect transistors. The inverted PSCs based on CH(NH2)2PbI3–xBrx with NDI‐ID ETM exhibit very high PCEs of up to 20.2%, which is better than that of widely used PCBM (phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester) ETM‐based PSCs. Moreover, NDI‐ID‐based PSCs exhibit very high long‐term temporal stability, retaining 90% of the initial PCE after 500 h at 100 °C with 1 sun illumination without encapsulation. Therefore, NDI‐ID is a promising ETM for highly efficient, stable PSCs.

Endothelial dysfunction is one of the main age‐related arterial phenotypes responsible for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in older adults. This endothelial dysfunction results from decreased ...bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) arising downstream of endothelial oxidative stress. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of anthocyanins and the underlying mechanism in rat thoracic aorta and human vascular endothelial cells in aging models. In vitro, cyanidin‐3‐rutinoside (C‐3‐R) and cyanidin‐3‐glucoside (C‐3‐G) inhibited the d‐galactose (d‐gal)‐induced senescence in human endothelial cells, as indicated by reduced senescence‐associated‐β‐galactosidase activity, p21, and p16INK4a. Anthocyanins blocked d‐gal‐induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and NADPH oxidase activity. Anthocyanins reversed d‐gal‐mediated inhibition of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) serine phosphorylation and SIRT1 expression, recovering NO level in endothelial cells. Also, SIRT1‐mediated eNOS deacetylation was shown to be involved in anthocyanin‐enhanced eNOS activity. In vivo, anthocyanin‐rich mulberry extract was administered to aging rats for 8 weeks. In vivo, mulberry extract alleviated endothelial senescence and oxidative stress in the aorta of aging rats. Consistently, mulberry extract also raised serum NO levels, increased phosphorylation of eNOS, increased SIRT1 expression, and reduced nitrotyrosine in aortas. The eNOS acetylation was higher in the aging group and was restored by mulberry extract treatment. Similarly, SIRT1 level associated with eNOS decreased in the aging group and was restored in aging plus mulberry group. These findings indicate that anthocyanins protect against endothelial senescence through enhanced NO bioavailability by regulating ROS formation and reducing eNOS uncoupling.
Aging is known for its correlation with increased protein acetylation rates and the decline of sirtuin‐1 (SIRT1) deacetylation activity. This study demonstrated that anthocyanin‐rich mulberry extract reduces oxidative stress in aging vasculature and attenuates endothelial dysfunction through reversed inhibition of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), serine phosphorylation, and SIRT1 expression, recovering NO level in senescence.
Purpose The purposes of this study were to evaluate regeneration of the articular cartilage after medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy for knees with medial-compartment osteoarthritis and to ...assess the clinical outcome and cartilage regeneration according to the postoperative limb alignment at 2 years postoperatively. Methods The study involved 159 knees in 159 patients. For evaluation of cartilage degeneration, the International Cartilage Repair Society grading system was used for arthroscopic grading on initial arthroscopy during high tibial osteotomy. The patients underwent a second-look arthroscopic evaluation of the articular cartilage at the time of removal of the plate, an average of 2 years after the initial osteotomy. For evaluation of cartilage regeneration, the articular cartilage was classified into 2 stages as no regenerative change (grade 1) or white scattering with fibrocartilage, partial coverage with fibrocartilage, or even coverage with fibrocartilage (grade 2) on second-look arthroscopy. Maturation of the cartilage regeneration was defined as even coverage with fibrocartilage. “Immaturation” of the cartilage regeneration was defined as white scattering with fibrocartilage or partial coverage with fibrocartilage. Clinical evaluations were performed by use of Knee Society scores preoperatively and at 2 years postoperatively. We divided the knees into 3 groups according to the postoperative limb alignment. Group A comprised knees with a mechanical tibiofemoral angle of 0° or less. Group B comprised knees with a mechanical tibiofemoral angle greater than 0° and less than 6°. Group C comprised knees with a mechanical tibiofemoral angle of 6° or greater. Results Grade 2 regeneration was achieved in the medial femoral condyle articular cartilage in 92% of knees and in the medial tibial plateau articular cartilage in 69% of knees. Maturation of the cartilage regeneration was found in the medial femoral condyle articular cartilage in 4% of knees and in the medial tibial plateau articular cartilage in 1% of knees. At follow-up, no significant differences were seen between clinical outcomes and initial cartilage degeneration ( P = .338) or cartilage regeneration ( P = .699). Regeneration of the medial femoral condyle articular cartilage was found in 75% of group A knees, 95% of group B knees, and 92% of group C knees. Significant differences were seen between cartilage regeneration and clinical outcomes ( P = .001), as well as postoperative limb alignment ( P = .018). Clinical and regeneration results were better in group B than in groups A and C. Conclusions The degenerated cartilage of the medial femoral condyle and medial tibial plateau could be partially or entirely covered by newly regenerated cartilage at 2 years after adequate correction of varus deformity by medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy without cartilage regeneration strategies. This study aimed to investigate the association between the levels of lead, mercury, cadmium, and nickel in the blood and renal function and to provide basic data for the development of health ...programs for the prevention of renal failure. This study included 1984 participants aged 19 and older who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2019. Differences in values according to general characteristics and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) stage were analyzed using a chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, and the influencing factors were analyzed through multiple regression analysis. The concentrations of lead, mercury, cadmium, and nickel, and the risk of elevated eGFR were analyzed using linear regression. The correlation between the variables was determined using Pearson's correlation analysis. Analysis of the correlation between blood lead, mercury, cadmium, and nickel levels and blood eGFR levels revealed that blood eGFR levels were significantly negatively correlated with blood lead, cadmium, and nickel levels (
≤ 0.001). This study is significant in that it found a significant association between decreased eGFR and heavy metal levels and provided meaningful basic data on the association between heavy metals and renal function.
Multi‐valued logic (MVL) technology that utilizes more than two logic states has recently been reconsidered because of the demand for greater power saving in current binary logic systems. Extensive ...efforts have been invested in developing MVL devices with multiple threshold voltages by adopting negative differential transconductance and resistance. In this study, a reconfigurable, multiple negative‐differential‐resistance (m‐NDR) device with an electric‐field‐induced tunability of multiple threshold voltages is reported, which comprises a BP/ReS2 heterojunction and a ReS2/h‐BN/metal capacitor. Tunability for the m‐NDR phenomenon is achieved via the resistance modulation of the ReS2 layer by electrical pulses applied to the capacitor region. Reconfigurability is verified in terms of the function of an MVL circuit composed of a reconfigurable m‐NDR device and a load transistor, wherein staggered‐type and broken‐type double peak‐NDR device operations are adopted for ternary inverter and latch circuits, respectively.
A reconfigurable, multiple negative‐differential‐resistance device with an electric‐field‐induced tunability of multiple threshold voltages is proposed. Following the successful verification of the tunability of multiple negative‐differential‐resistance phenomenon, the reconfigurability in terms of the function of multi‐valued logic circuits, from ternary inverter to latch circuit, is demonstrated.

Altered gene expression is the primary molecular mechanism responsible for the pathological processes of human diseases, including cancer. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are virtually involved at the ...post-transcriptional level and bind to 3' UTR of their target messenger RNA (mRNA) to suppress expression. Dysfunction of miRNAs disturbs expression of oncogenic or tumor-suppressive target genes, which is implicated in cancer pathogenesis. As such, a large number of miRNAs have been found to be downregulated or upregulated in human cancers and to function as oncomiRs or oncosuppressor miRs. Notably, the molecular mechanism underlying the dysregulation of miRNA expression in cancer has been recently uncovered. The genetic deletion or amplification and epigenetic methylation of miRNA genomic loci and the transcription factor-mediated regulation of primary miRNA often alter the landscape of miRNA expression in cancer. Dysregulation of the multiple processing steps in mature miRNA biogenesis can also cause alterations in miRNA expression in cancer. Detailed knowledge of the regulatory mechanism of miRNAs in cancer is essential for understanding its physiological role and the implications of cancer-associated dysfunction and dysregulation. In this review, we elucidate how miRNA expression is deregulated in cancer, paying particular attention to the cancer-associated transcriptional and post-transcriptional factors that execute miRNA programs.

The development of hepatic models capable of long-term expansion with competent liver functionality is technically challenging in a personalized setting. Stem cell-based organoid technologies can provide an alternative source of patient-derived primary hepatocytes. However, self-renewing and functionally competent human pluripotent stem cell (PSC)-derived hepatic organoids have not been developed.
We developed a novel method to efficiently and reproducibly generate functionally mature human hepatic organoids derived from PSCs, including human embryonic stem cells and induced PSCs. The maturity of the organoids was validated by a detailed transcriptome analysis and functional performance assays. The organoids were applied to screening platforms for the prediction of toxicity and the evaluation of drugs that target hepatic steatosis through real-time monitoring of cellular bioenergetics and high-content analyses.
Our organoids were morphologically indistinguishable from adult liver tissue-derived epithelial organoids and exhibited self-renewal. With further maturation, their molecular features approximated those of liver tissue, although these features were lacking in 2D differentiated hepatocytes. Our organoids preserved mature liver properties, including serum protein production, drug metabolism and detoxifying functions, active mitochondrial bioenergetics, and regenerative and inflammatory responses. The organoids exhibited significant toxic responses to clinically relevant concentrations of drugs that had been withdrawn from the market due to hepatotoxicity and recapitulated human disease phenotypes such as hepatic steatosis.
Our organoids exhibit self-renewal (expandable and further able to differentiate) while maintaining their mature hepatic characteristics over long-term culture. These organoids may provide a versatile and valuable platform for physiologically and pathologically relevant hepatic models in the context of personalized medicine.
A functionally mature, human cell-based liver model exhibiting human responses in toxicity prediction and drug evaluation is urgently needed for pre-clinical drug development. Here, we develop a novel human pluripotent stem cell-derived hepatocyte-like liver organoid that is critically advanced in terms of its generation method, functional performance, and application technologies. Our organoids can contribute to the better understanding of liver development and regeneration, and provide insights for metabolic studies and disease modeling, as well as toxicity assessments and drug screening for personalized medicine.
Low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is the main target in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). MLDL had a slight advantage over SLDL with the lowest MADs across the full spectrum of TG levels, whether divided into severe hyper/non-hyper to moderate hypertriglyceridaemia samples or stratified by 100-mg/dL TG intervals, even up to TG values of 500-600 mg/dL. MLDL may be a readily adoptable and cost-effective alternative to direct LDL-C measurement, irrespective of dyslipidaemia status. In populations with relatively high prevalence of mild-to-moderate hypertriglyceridaemia, Martin's equation may be optimal for LDL-C and ASCVD risk estimation.
To examine prevalence of refractive errors and its associated factors, such as body stature and educational level, among 19-year-old males in Seoul, Korea.
A population-based cross-sectional study ...was performed in male subjects (n = 23,616; age = 19 years) who were normally resident in Seoul for male compulsory conscripts during the study period (2010). Refractive examination was performed with cycloplegia. Height, weight, and educational level were examined. Myopia was defined as a spherical equivalent less than -0.5 diopters (D) and high myopia less than -6.0 D. The association of myopia with body stature and educational level was analyzed using logistic regression analysis.
The prevalence of myopia in 19-year-old males in Seoul was 96.5%. The prevalence of high myopia was 21.61%. Body stature was not significantly associated with myopia. Four- to 6-year university students (odds ratio OR 1.69; P < 0.001) and 2 to 3-year college students (OR 1.68; P < 0.001) showed significantly higher risk for myopia than those with lower academic achievement (< high school graduation).
The 19-year-old male population in Seoul, Korea, demonstrated a very high myopic prevalence. Myopic refractive error was associated with academic achievement, not with body stature.
