The objective of the experiment was to examine effects of a diet containing a high concentration (28.8% dry matter basis) of corn distillers grain with solubles on manure characteristics and NH3 and ...H2S emissions from dairy cow manure. Eighteen cows were blocked by parity and days in milk, and cows in each block were assigned to the following treatments: the control diet (CON) or CON with distillers grains with solubles at 28.8% (dry matter basis) replacing mainly soybean meal (DG). The experiment was conducted for 11 wk, and feces and urine from individual cows were collected over 3 d in wk 11 (a total of 8 spot samples per cow). Fecal or urine samples were composited by cow, and the composite feces and urine were analyzed for indigestible neutral detergent fiber and creatinine concentration, respectively, for individual cows to estimate total fecal and urine outputs. Immediately before the manure incubation, composited feces and urine were sampled to determine manure characteristics. Manure was reconstituted according to daily fecal and urine excretion estimated for individual cows. Individual manures were incubated using a continuous air flux multichamber system over 10 d to measure NH3 and H2S emissions. All data from 18 manures were analyzed using the Mixed procedure of SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). The ratio of feces to urine and the contents of manure total and volatile solids were not different among treatments. Urine from DG had lower pH and DG manure had lower N content and greater S content compared with CON. During the 10-d incubation, NH3 emission was considerably less for DG versus CON. The emission of H2S over 10 d for DG was greater compared with that for CON. After the incubation, manure pH and N and S concentrations were greater for DG versus CON. In conclusion, manure from cows fed a high-DG diet decreased urinary N contribution to manure N and lowered urine pH, which were the factors that caused the decrease in NH3 emission from DG manure. However, the DG diet increased dietary S concentration and increased S excretion in urine and feces. This increased H2S emission from DG manure during the 10-d manure incubation.
An eight-year long reanalysis of atmospheric composition data covering the period 2003–2010 was constructed as part of the FP7-funded Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate project by ...assimilating satellite data into a global model and data assimilation system. This reanalysis provides fields of chemically reactive gases, namely carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen oxides, and formaldehyde, as well as aerosols and greenhouse gases globally at a horizontal resolution of about 80 km for both the troposphere and the stratosphere. This paper describes the assimilation system for the reactive gases and presents validation results for the reactive gas analysis fields to document the data set and to give a first indication of its quality. Tropospheric CO values from the MACC reanalysis are on average 10–20% lower than routine observations from commercial aircrafts over airports through most of the troposphere, and have larger negative biases in the boundary layer at urban sites affected by air pollution, possibly due to an underestimation of CO or precursor emissions. Stratospheric ozone fields from the MACC reanalysis agree with ozonesondes and ACE-FTS data to within ±10% in most seasons and regions. In the troposphere the reanalysis shows biases of −5% to +10% with respect to ozonesondes and aircraft data in the extratropics, but has larger negative biases in the tropics. Area-averaged total column ozone agrees with ozone fields from a multi-sensor reanalysis data set to within a few percent. NO2 fields from the reanalysis show the right seasonality over polluted urban areas of the NH and over tropical biomass burning areas, but underestimate wintertime NO2 maxima over anthropogenic pollution regions and overestimate NO2 in northern and southern Africa during the tropical biomass burning seasons. Tropospheric HCHO is well simulated in the MACC reanalysis even though no satellite data are assimilated. It shows good agreement with independent SCIAMACHY retrievals over regions dominated by biogenic emissions with some anthropogenic input, such as the eastern US and China, and also over African regions influenced by biogenic sources and biomass burning.
Aims. We have studied a sample of 28 periodically variable B-type supergiants selected from the HIPPARCOS mission and 12 comparison stars covering the whole B-type spectral range. Our goal is to test ...if their variability is compatible with opacity-driven non-radial oscillations. Methods. We have used the NLTE atmosphere code FASTWIND to derive the atmospheric and wind parameters of the complete sample through line profile fitting. We applied the method to selected H, He, and Si line profiles, measured with the high resolution CES spectrograph attached to the ESO CAT telescope in la Silla, Chile. Results. From the location of the stars in the ( \log T_{\rm eff}, log g) diagram, we suggest that variability of our sample supergiants is indeed due to the gravity modes resulting from the opacity mechanism. We find nine of the comparison stars to be periodically variable as well, and suggest them to be new \alpha\,Cyg variables. We find marginal evidence of a correlation between the amplitude of the photometric variability and the wind density. We investigate the wind momentum-luminosity relation for the whole range of B spectral type supergiants, and find that the later types (>B5) perfectly follow the relation for A supergiants. Additionally, we provide a new spectral type-T_{\rm eff} calibration for B supergiants. Conclusions. Our results imply the possibility of probing internal structure models of massive stars of spectral type B through seismic tuning of gravity modes.
Aims. We determine the fundamental parameters of a sample of B stars with apparent visual magnitudes brighter than 8 in the field-of-view of the CoRoT space mission, from high-resolution ...spectroscopy. Methods. We developed an automatic procedure for the spectroscopic analysis of B-type stars with winds, based on an extensive grid of FASTWIND model atmospheres. We use the equivalent widths and/or the line profile shapes of continuum normalized hydrogen, helium, and silicon line profiles to determine the fundamental properties of these stars in an automated way. Results. After thorough tests, on both synthetic datasets and very high-quality, high-resolution spectra of B stars for which we already had accurate values of physical properties from alternative analyses, we applied our method to 66 B-type stars contained in the ground-based archive of the CoRoT space mission. We discuss the statistical properties of the sample and compare them with those predicted by evolutionary models of B stars. Conclusions. Our spectroscopic results provide a valuable starting point for any future seismic modelling of the stars, should they be observed by CoRoT.
ABSTRACT
We used extensive ground‐based multisite and archival spectroscopy to derive observational constraints for a seismic modelling of the magnetic β Cep star V2052 Ophiuchi. The line‐profile ...variability is dominated by a radial mode (f1 = 7.148 46 d−1) and by rotational modulation (Prot = 3.638 833 d). Two non‐radial low‐amplitude modes (f2 = 7.756 03 d−1 and f3 = 6.823 08 d−1) are also detected. The four periodicities that we found are the same as the ones discovered from a companion multisite photometric campaign and known in the literature. Using the photometric constraints on the degrees ℓ of the pulsation modes, we show that both f2 and f3 are prograde modes with (ℓ, m) = (4, 2) or (4, 3). These results allowed us to deduce ranges for the mass (M ∈ 8.2, 9.6 M⊙) and central hydrogen abundance (Xc ∈ 0.25, 0.32) of V2052 Oph, to identify the radial orders n1 = 1, n2 = −3 and n3 = −2, and to derive an equatorial rotation velocity veq ∈ 71, 75 km s−1. The model parameters are in full agreement with the effective temperature and surface gravity deduced from spectroscopy. Only models with no or mild core overshooting (αov ∈ 0, 0.15 local pressure scale heights) can account for the observed properties. Such a low overshooting is opposite to our previous modelling results for the non‐magnetic β Cep star θ Oph having very similar parameters, except for a slower surface rotation rate. We discuss whether this result can be explained by the presence of a magnetic field in V2052 Oph that inhibits mixing in its interior.
Asteroseismology offers the possibility of probing stellar interiors and testing evolutionary and seismic models. Precise photometry and spectroscopy obtained during multi-site campaigns on young ...open clusters allows discovering rich samples of pulsating stars and using them in a simultaneous seismic modelling called ensemble asteroseismology. The aim of this study is to obtain the age of the open cluster NGC 6910 by means of ensemble asteroseismology of the early-type pulsating members, to derive their stellar parameters, and to classify the excited modes. We used time-series analysis, performed photometric and spectroscopic mode identification, and calculated grids of evolutionary and seismic models to apply the procedure of ensemble asteroseismology for nine pulsating members of NGC 6910. With two iterations of the procedure of ensemble asteroseismology applied to nine pulsating stars we derived an age of 10.6 −0.8+0.9 − 0.8 + 0.9 $ ^{+0.9}_{-0.8} $ Myr for NGC 6910. We also identified the degree l for 8 of 37 modes detected in these stars and classified all modes in terms of p, g, and mixed-mode pulsations. Of the nine pulsating stars examined in the paper, eight are β Cep stars, including three that are hybrid β Cep and slowly pulsating B-type (SPB) pulsators, and one is an SPB star. Interestingly, the least massive β Cep star, NGC 6910-38, has a mass of about 5.6 M⊙. The present theory does not predict unstable p modes in B-type stars with such a low mass. The g modes with relatively high frequencies (> 3.5 d−1), observed in three members of the cluster, are also stable according to seismic modelling. Both findings pose a challenge for theoretical calculations and prompt a revision of the opacities. The procedure of ensemble asteroseismology was found to be successful for NGC 6910 and χ Per on the basis of pulsating B-type stars and can therefore be applied to other young open clusters that are rich in such stars.
This paper evaluates and discusses the quality of the stratospheric ozone analyses delivered in near real time by the MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) project during the 3-year ...period between September 2009 and September 2012. Ozone analyses produced by four different chemical data assimilation (CDA) systems are examined and compared: the Integrated Forecast System coupled to the Model for OZone And Related chemical Tracers (IFS-MOZART); the Belgian Assimilation System for Chemical ObsErvations (BASCOE); the Synoptic Analysis of Chemical Constituents by Advanced Data Assimilation (SACADA); and the Data Assimilation Model based on Transport Model version 3 (TM3DAM). The assimilated satellite ozone retrievals differed for each system; SACADA and TM3DAM assimilated only total ozone observations, BASCOE assimilated profiles for ozone and some related species, while IFS-MOZART assimilated both types of ozone observations. All analyses deliver total column values that agree well with ground-based observations (biases < 5%) and have a realistic seasonal cycle, except for BASCOE analyses, which underestimate total ozone in the tropics all year long by 7 to 10%, and SACADA analyses, which overestimate total ozone in polar night regions by up to 30%. The validation of the vertical distribution is based on independent observations from ozonesondes and the ACE-FTS (Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment - Fourier Transform Spectrometer) satellite instrument. It cannot be performed with TM3DAM, which is designed only to deliver analyses of total ozone columns. Vertically alternating positive and negative biases are found in the IFS-MOZART analyses as well as an overestimation of 30 to 60% in the polar lower stratosphere during polar ozone depletion events. SACADA underestimates lower stratospheric ozone by up to 50% during these events above the South Pole and overestimates it by approximately the same amount in the tropics. The three-dimensional (3-D) analyses delivered by BASCOE are found to have the best quality among the three systems resolving the vertical dimension, with biases not exceeding 10% all year long, at all stratospheric levels and in all latitude bands, except in the tropical lowermost stratosphere. The northern spring 2011 period is studied in more detail to evaluate the ability of the analyses to represent the exceptional ozone depletion event, which happened above the Arctic in March 2011. Offline sensitivity tests are performed during this month and indicate that the differences between the forward models or the assimilation algorithms are much less important than the characteristics of the assimilated data sets. They also show that IFS-MOZART is able to deliver realistic analyses of ozone both in the troposphere and in the stratosphere, but this requires the assimilation of observations from nadir-looking instruments as well as the assimilation of profiles, which are well resolved vertically and extend into the lowermost stratosphere.
Context. The influence of binarity on the late stages of stellar evolution remains an open issue. Aims. While the first binary post-AGB stars were serendipitously discovered, the distinct ...characteristics of their spectral energy distribution (SED) allowed us to launch a more systematic search for binaries. We selected post-AGB objects, which exhibit a broad dust excess starting either at H or K, pointing to the presence of a gravitationally bound dusty disc in the system. We initiated an extensive multiwavelength study of those systems and here report on our radial velocity and photometric monitoring results for six stars of early F type, which are pulsators of small amplitude. Methods. To determine the radial velocity of low signal-to-noise ratio time-series data, we constructed dedicated autocorrelation masks based on high signal-to-noise ratio spectra, used in our published chemical studies. The radial velocity variations were analysed in detail to differentiate between pulsational variability and variability caused by orbital motion. When available, the photometric monitoring data were used to complement the time series of radial velocity data and to establish the nature of the pulsation. Finally, orbital minimalisation was performed to constrain the orbital elements. Results. All of the six objects are binaries with orbital periods ranging from 120 to 1800 days. Five systems have non-circular orbits. The mass functions range from 0.004 to 0.57 $M_{\odot}$ and the companions are probably unevolved objects of (very) low initial mass. We argue that these binaries must have evolved through a phase of strong binary interaction when the primary was a cool supergiant. Although the origin of the circumstellar disc is not well understood, the disc is generally believed to have formed during this strong interaction phase. The eccentric orbits of these highly evolved objects remain poorly understood. In one object, the line-of-sight grazes the edge of the puffed-up inner rim of the disc. Conclusions. These results corroborate our earlier statement that evolved objects in binary stars create a Keplerian dusty circumbinary disc. With the measured orbits and mass functions, we conclude that the circumbinary discs seem to have a major impact on the evolution of a significant fraction of binary systems.
Aims. We aim to interpret the photometric and spectroscopic variability of the luminous blue variable supergiant HD 50064 (V = 8.21). Methods. CoRoT space photometry and follow-up high-resolution ...spectroscopy with a time base of 137 d and 169 d, respectively, was gathered, analysed, and interpreted using standard time series analysis and light curve modelling methods, as well as spectral line diagnostics. Results. The space photometry reveals one period of 37 d, which undergoes a sudden amplitude change with a factor 1.6. The pulsation period is confirmed in the spectroscopy, which additionally reveals metal line radial velocity values differing by ~30 km s-1 depending on the spectral line and on the epoch. We estimate Teff ~ 13 500 K, log g ~ 1.5 from the equivalent width of Si lines. The Balmer lines reveal that the star undergoes episodes of changing mass loss on a time scale similar to the changes in the photometric and spectroscopic variability, with an average value of log $\dot{M}$ $\simeq$ -5 (in M$_\odot$ yr-1). We tentatively interpret the 37 d period as the result of a strange mode oscillation.
Aims. We selected a large sample of O-B stars that were considered as (candidate) slowly pulsating B, \beta Cep, and Maia stars after the analysis of their HIPPARCOS data. We analysed our new seven ...passband GENEVA data collected for these stars during the first three years of scientific operations of the MERCATOR telescope. We performed a frequency analysis for 28 targets with more than 50 high-quality measurements to improve their variability classification. For the pulsating stars, we tried both to identify the modes and to search for rotationally split modes. Methods. We searched for frequencies in all the GENEVA passbands and colours by using two independent frequency analysis methods and we applied a 3.6 S/N-level criterion to locate the significant peaks in the periodograms. The modes were identified by applying the method of photometric amplitudes for which we calculated a large, homogeneous grid of equilibrium models to perform a pulsational stability analysis. When both the radius and the projected rotational velocity of an object are known, we determined a lower limit for the rotation frequency to estimate the expected frequency spacings in rotationally split pulsation modes. Results. We detected 61 frequencies, among which 33 are new. We classified 21 objects as pulsating variables (7 new confirmed pulsating stars, including 2 hybrid \beta Cep/SPB stars), 6 as non-pulsating variables (binaries or spotted stars), and 1 as photometrically constant. All the Maia candidates were reclassified into other variability classes. We performed mode identification for the pulsating variables for the first time. The most probable \ell value is 0, 1, 2, and 4 for 1, 31, 9, and 5 modes, respectively, including only 4 unambiguous identifications. For 7 stars we cannot rule out that some of the observed frequencies belong to the same rotationally split mode. For 4 targets we may begin to resolve close frequency multiplets.
