The iron bioavailability and acute oral toxicity in rats of a ferrous gluconate compound stabilized with glycine (SFG), designed for food fortification, was studied in this work by means of the ...prophylactic method and the Wilcoxon method, respectively. For the former studies, SFG was homogeneously added to a basal diet of low iron content, reaching a final iron concentration of 20.1 +/- 2.4 mg Fe/kg diet. A reference standard diet using ferrous sulfate as an iron-fortifying source (19.0 +/- 2.1 mg Fe/kg diet) and a control diet without iron additions (9.3 +/- 1.4 mg Fe/kg diet) were prepared in the laboratory in a similar way. These diets were administered to three different groups of weaning rats during 23 d as the only type of solid nourishment. The iron bioavailability of SFG was calculated as the relationship between the mass of iron incorporated into hemoglobin during the treatment and the total iron intake per animal. This parameter resulted in 36.6 +/- 6.2% for SFG, whereas a value of 35.4 +/- 8.0% was obtained for ferrous sulfate. The acute toxicological studies were performed in two groups of 70 female and 70 male Sprague-Dawley rats that were administered increasing doses of iron from SFG. The LD50 values of 1775 and 1831 mg SFG/kg body wt were obtained for female and male rats, respectively, evidencing that SFG can be considered as a safe compound from a toxicological point of view.

Background Patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis demonstrated positive responses to ixekizumab, an anti-interleukin-17A monoclonal antibody, in a phase-II, randomized, placebo-controlled ...trial. Objective We sought to evaluate long-term efficacy and safety of ixekizumab. Methods After receiving 10, 25, 75, or 150 mg of ixekizumab or placebo during randomized, placebo-controlled trial, patients with less than 75% improvement from baseline on the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score (PASI75) entered open-label extension (OLE); patients with PASI75 or higher entered a treatment-free period (weeks 20-32), then entered OLE after meeting response criteria. During OLE, patients received 120 mg of subcutaneous ixekizumab every 4 weeks. Results In all, 120 patients entered OLE; 103 completed 52 weeks or more of treatment. Overall, 77% of patients achieved PASI75 at week 52 (nonresponder imputation). Patients who responded to treatment in the randomized, placebo-controlled trial maintained a high-level response by week 52 of OLE (PASI75 = 95%; 90% improvement from baseline on the PASI score = 94%; 100% improvement from baseline on the PASI score = 82%). Irrespective of dose in the randomized, placebo-controlled trial, each group had similar response rates at week 52 of OLE. The exposure-adjusted incidence rate for adverse events was 0.47 and for serious adverse events was 0.06 per patient-year during OLE. Limitations No control group, small sample sizes, and bias toward retention of patients with positive responses limit interpretation. Conclusion A high proportion of patients responded to ixekizumab therapy and maintained clinical responses over 1 year of treatment with no unexpected safety signals.
Gender-related differences in the process of aging have been well documented in relation to life expectancy, prevalence of chronic conditions, and level of disability but still the explanation of the ...role of social determinants in quality of life, which can play different role in men and women, has remained unclear. The investigation aims to reveal gender-related differences in social determinants on quality of life assessed by a multi-pathway model considering health, social, demographic and living place characteristics.
The sample for the analysis consists of 5099 participants aged 50+ years from general Finnish, Polish and Spanish populations being a part of cross-sectional COURAGE in EUROPE study. The quality of life was measured by WHOQOL-AGE scale. Social determinants were measured by the COURAGE Social Network Index, the OSLO-3 Social Support Scale, the Three-item UCLA Loneliness Scale, participation and trust scales were used. The path model was used to verify relations between different determinants of quality of life by multi-pathway modelling what enabled adjustment for several covariates.
The results showed that the effects of social networks, participation, trust and loneliness on quality of life in pre-elderly (aged 50–64) men and women; which were similar in both gender groups. Gender-related differences in the role of social support, participation and trust in quality of life were observed among older (aged 65–79) individuals, males benefited more from social support, females more from social participation and trust. In the oldest (80+) group gender-related differences were noticed only in the role of social support in quality of life.
A recent practice turn in the communication and organizational sciences has led many researchers to study work in practice. In this chapter I suggest that studies of work practices in organizations ...would benefit from conceptual clarification. To do so, I organize this review around three central questions: (a) what are work practices? (b) what role do work practices play in the process of organizing? and (c) how can scholars build theory from empirical studies of work practices? I suggest several ways in which the concept of work practice can be clarified to provide coherence for communication researchers.
A physical and rudimentary genetic map of the Haemophilus ducreyi strain 35000 genome was constructed. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was used to separate restriction fragments of H. ducreyi DNA ...digested with Sfil, I-Ceul, or Sfil plus I-Ceul. The sizes of the fragments were determined, and the circular chromosome was estimated to be 1757 kbp. The six I-Ceul fragments and four Sfil fragments were ordered into macrorestriction maps using Southern blot hybridization with random H. ducreyi clones as probes. It was shown that both H. ducreyi and the distantly related Haemophilus influenzae have six rrn operons marked by the locations of the I-Ceul sites. However, the two species displayed distinct I-Ceul restriction patterns. A second H. ducreyi strain, CIP542, displayed an identical I-Ceul pattern to that of H. ducreyi 35000, but Sfil digests of teh two strains were distinct. The orientation of the six rrn operons was determined and thirteen identified H. ducreyi genes positioned on the map of strain 35000.
This study aimed to define the indications, technique and results of presurgical embolization of spinal tumours using Glubran 2 acrylic glue. Embolization was performed prior to surgery in eight ...patients with benign tumours and 11 patients with malignant lesions. The main embolization agent used was Glubran 2, a new acrylic glue with the EC mark, suitable for permanent embolization of the pathological circulation of primary and secondary spinal tumours.
All the procedures were technically feasible and achieved partial or complete embolization of the vascularized lesion without periprocedural complications. Glubran 2 proved easy to use with excellent intravascular penetration achieving permanent embolization. The degree of presurgical embolization in terms of surgical field haemostasis was correlated with the degree of vascular occlusion achieved.
: Several recent studies have documented that a widespread practice of dumping toxic wastes has taken place for many years in the Provinces of Naples and Caserta. Extensive programs of environmental ...monitoring are currently ongoing in the area. In this frame, the Department of Civil Defence of the Italian Government has appointed an ad hoc study group in order to assess the health status of the population resident in the area of interest. The first investigation performed by the study group has been a geographic study on cancer mortality and occurrence of malformations in 196 municipalities constituting the two Provinces. The study detected an area located in the southeastern part of the Province of Caserta and in the northwestern part of the Province of Naples, where cancer mortality and congenital malformations show significantly increased rates with respect to expected figures derived from the regional population. The area highlighted by the study is, in general terms, overlapping with the area where most illegal dumping of toxic wastes took place. It is now recommended that mortality studies be extended to take into account other health outcomes, to search for correlations with environmental exposures, and consider possible confounding factors.
