Due to the similarity in chemical structure, lignin has presented great potential in the synthesis of bio-based phenolic resin. Herein, a facile and scalable synthesis strategy for a novel cage-like ...lignin-based phenolic resin was proposed through direct spray drying of the mixture of phenolic resin and unmodified lignin. The as-prepared lignin-based phenolic resin was pre-carbonized and carbonized using KOH to produce mesoporous carbon materials (LPRAC) that were further employed as supercapacitor electrodes. The results revealed that the lignin addition led to the noticeable change of the resin shape from perfect sphere to cage-like structure owing to the surfactivity and hydrophilicity of lignin. The cage-like structure promoted the KOH-activated pore generation and expansion in the carbonization process, resulting in the significantly increased specific surface area of the phenolic carbon and the intensified mesoporous formation. The electrochemical performance determination indicated that the specific capacitance of LPRAC-20% (20% lignin addition) was 217.3 F/g at 0.5 A/g, which was considerably higher than that of the lignin-free phenolic carbon (122.6 F/g). Moreover, the LPRAC-20% also exhibited preferable capacitance retention and excellent cycling stability. Accordingly, the present work offers a simple and scalable approach to prepare cage-like mesoporous carbon with excellent electrochemical performance from lignin-based phenolic resin and thus provides a promising route for lignin valorization in energy storage materials.

Salt substitutes with reduced sodium levels and increased potassium levels have been shown to lower blood pressure, but their effects on cardiovascular and safety outcomes are uncertain.
We conducted ...an open-label, cluster-randomized trial involving persons from 600 villages in rural China. The participants had a history of stroke or were 60 years of age or older and had high blood pressure. The villages were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to the intervention group, in which the participants used a salt substitute (75% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride by mass), or to the control group, in which the participants continued to use regular salt (100% sodium chloride). The primary outcome was stroke, the secondary outcomes were major adverse cardiovascular events and death from any cause, and the safety outcome was clinical hyperkalemia.
A total of 20,995 persons were enrolled in the trial. The mean age of the participants was 65.4 years, and 49.5% were female, 72.6% had a history of stroke, and 88.4% a history of hypertension. The mean duration of follow-up was 4.74 years. The rate of stroke was lower with the salt substitute than with regular salt (29.14 events vs. 33.65 events per 1000 person-years; rate ratio, 0.86; 95% confidence interval CI, 0.77 to 0.96; P = 0.006), as were the rates of major cardiovascular events (49.09 events vs. 56.29 events per 1000 person-years; rate ratio, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.80 to 0.94; P<0.001) and death (39.28 events vs. 44.61 events per 1000 person-years; rate ratio, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.82 to 0.95; P<0.001). The rate of serious adverse events attributed to hyperkalemia was not significantly higher with the salt substitute than with regular salt (3.35 events vs. 3.30 events per 1000 person-years; rate ratio, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.80 to 1.37; P = 0.76).
Among persons who had a history of stroke or were 60 years of age or older and had high blood pressure, the rates of stroke, major cardiovascular events, and death from any cause were lower with the salt substitute than with regular salt. More than 80% of land plant species can form symbioses with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, and nutrient transfer to plants is largely mediated through this partnership. Over the last few years, ...great progress has been made in deciphering the molecular mechanisms underlying the AM-mediated modulation of nutrient uptake progress, and a growing number of fungal and plant genes responsible for the uptake of nutrients from soil or transfer across the fungal–root interface have been identified. In this review, we outline the current concepts of nutrient exchanges within this symbiosis (mechanisms and regulation) and focus on P and N transfer from the fungal partner to the host plant, with a highlight on a possible interplay between P and N nutrient exchanges. Transporters belonging to the plant or AM fungi can synergistically process the transmembrane transport of soil nutrients to the symbiotic interface for further plant acquisition. Although much progress has been made to elucidate the complex mechanism for the integrated roles of nutrient transfers in AM symbiosis, questions still remain to be answered; for example, P and N transporters are less studied in different species of AM fungi; the involvement of AM fungi in plant N uptake is not as clearly defined as that of P; coordinated utilization of N and P is unknown; transporters of cultivated plants inoculated with AM fungi and transcriptomic and metabolomic networks at both the soil–fungi interface and fungi–plant interface have been insufficiently studied. These findings open new perspectives for fundamental research and application of AM fungi in agriculture.
To investigate related factors for postoperative pathological upgrading of cervical biopsy to cervical cancer (CC) in patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)3 after conical resection.
...This retrospective study collected data from patients diagnosed with CIN3 by cervical biopsies at the author's Hospital between January 2012 and December 2022. The primary outcome was the pathological results of patients after conical resection. The pathological findings were categorized into the pathological upgrading group if postoperative pathology indicated CC, while those with normal, inflammatory, or cervical precancerous lesions were classified into the pathological non-upgrading group. The factors associated with upgrading were identified using multivariable logistic regression analysis.
Among 511 patients, there were 125 patients in the pathological upgrading group (24.46%). The patients in the upgrading group were younger (47.68 ± 9.46 vs. 52.11 ± 7.02, P < 0.001), showed a lower proportion of menopausal women (38.40% vs. 53.02%, P = 0.0111), a lower proportion of HSIL (40.00% vs. 57.77%, P = 0.001), a higher rate of HPV-16/18 positive (25.60% vs. 17.36%, P = 0.011), a higher rate of contact bleeding (54.40% vs. 21.50%, P < 0.001), lower HDL levels (1.31 ± 0.29 vs. 1.37 ± 0.34 mmol/L, P = 0.002), higher neutrophil counts (median, 3.50 vs. 3.10 × 109/L, P = 0.001), higher red blood cell counts (4.01 ± 0.43 vs. 3.97 ± 0.47 × 1012/L, P = 0.002), higher platelet counts (204.84 ± 61.24 vs. 187.06 ± 73.66 × 109/L, P = 0.012), and a smaller platelet volume (median, 11.50 vs. 11.90 fL, P = 0.002).The multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that age (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.86-0.94, P < 0.001), menopausal (OR = 2.68, 95% CI: 1.38-5.22, P = 0.004), contact bleeding (OR = 4.80, 95% CI: 2.91-7.91, P < 0.001), and mean platelet volume (OR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.69-0.99, P = 0.038) were independently associated with pathological upgrading from CIN3 to CC after conical resection.
Age, menopausal, contact bleeding, and mean platelet volume are risk factors of pathological upgrading from CIN3 to CC after conical resection, which could help identify high risk and susceptible patients of pathological upgrading to CC.
Verticillium wilt is a soil-borne disease, and severely limits the development of cotton production. To investigate the role of endophytic fungi on Verticillium wilt, CEF-818 (Penicillium ...simplicissimum), CEF-714 (Leptosphaeria sp.), CEF-642 (Talaromyces flavus.) and CEF-193 (Acremonium sp.) isolated from cotton roots were used to assess their effects against cotton wilt disease caused by a defoliating V. dahliae strain Vd080. In the greenhouse, all treatments significantly reduced disease incidence and disease index, with the control efficacy ranging from 26% (CEF-642) to 67% (CEF-818) at 25 days (d) after inoculation. In the disease nursery, compared to controls (with disease incidence of 33.8% and disease index of 31), CEF-818, CEF-193, CEF-714 and CEF-642 provided a protection effect of 69.5%, 69.2%, 54.6% and 45.7%, respectively. Especially, CEF-818 and CEF-714 still provided well protection against Verticillium wilt with 46.9% and 56.6% or 14.3% and 33.7% at the first peak of the disease in heavily infected field, respectively (in early July). These results indicated that these endophytes not only delayed but also reduced wilt symptoms on cotton. In the harvest, the available cotton bolls of plant treated with CEF-818 and CEF-714 increased to 13.1, and 12.2, respectively. And the seed cotton yield significantly increased after seed bacterization with CEF-818 (3442.04 kg/ha) compared to untreated control (3207.51 kg/ha) by 7.3%. Furtherly, CEF-818 and CET-714 treatment increased transcript levels for PAL, PPO, POD, which leads to the increase of cotton defense reactions. Our results indicate that seed treatment of cotton plants with CEF-818 and CET-714 can help in the biocontrol of V. dahliae and improve seed cotton yield in cotton fields. This study provided a better understanding of cotton-endophyte interactions which will aid in developing effective biocontrol agents for Verticillium wilt of cotton in futhre.
The synthesis of a series of 1,2‐diamino‐o‐carboranes (1–4) is reported. The molecular structures of these diamino‐o‐carboranes are remarkable as the inner‐cluster C−C bonds are all ultra‐long ...(162.7–193.1 pm) and vary substantially with small variations in the substituents. The results of quantum mechanical investigations suggest that the origin of the bond elongation is significant in‐plane negative hyperconjugation of lone pairs of the nitrogen substituents with the σ* orbitals of the C−C bonds in o‐carboranes.

Increasing evidence suggests that white matter disorders based on myelin sheath impairment may underlie the neuropathological changes in schizophrenia.But it is unknown whether enhancing ...remyelination is a beneficial approach to schizophrenia.To investigate this hypothesis,we used clemastine,an FDA-approved drug with high potency in promoting oligodendroglial differentiation and myelination,on a cuprizone-induced mouse model of demyelination.The mice exposed to cuprizone（0.2%in chow） for 6 weeks displayed schizophrenia-like behavioral changes,including decreased exploration of the center in the open field test and increased entries into the arms of the Y-maze,as well as evident demyelination in the cortex and corpus callosum.Clemastine treatment was initiated upon cuprizone withdrawal at 10 mg/kg per day for3 weeks.As expected,myelin repair was greatly enhanced in the demyelinated regions with increased mature oligodendrocytes（APC-positive） and myelin basic protein.More importantly,the clemastine treatment rescued the schizophrenia-like behavioral changes in the open field test and the Y-maze compared to vehicle,suggesting a beneficial effect via promoting myelin repair.Our findings indicate that enhancing remyelination may be a potential therapy for schizophrenia.
In this study, an internal fingerprint-guided epidermal thickness of fingertip skin is proposed for optical image encryption based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) combined with U-Net ...architecture of a convolutional neural network (CNN). The epidermal thickness of fingertip skin is calculated by the distance between the upper and lower boundaries of the epidermal layer in cross-sectional optical coherence tomography (OCT) images, which is segmented using CNN, and the internal fingerprint at the epidermis-dermis junction (DEJ) is extracted based on the maximum intensity projection (MIP) algorithm. The experimental results indicate that the internal fingerprint-guided epidermal thickness is insensitive to pressure due to normal correlation coefficients and the encryption process between epidermal thickness maps of fingertip skin under different pressures. In addition, the result of the numerical simulation demonstrates the feasibility and security of the encryption scheme by structural similarity index matrix (SSIM) analysis between the original image and the recovered image with the correct and error keys decryption, respectively. The robustness is analyzed based on the SSIM value in three aspects: different pressures, noise attacks, and data loss. Key randomness is valid by the gray histograms, and the average correlation coefficients of adjacent pixelated values in three directions and the average entropy were calculated. This study suggests that the epidermal thickness of fingertip skin could be seen as important biometric information for information encryption.
Efficient exogenous DNA integration can be mediated by Cas9 through the non-homology end-joining pathway. However, such integrations are often imprecise and contain a variety of mutations at the ...junctions between the external DNA and the genomic loci. Here we describe a microhomology-dependent targeted integration method, designated MITI, for precise site-specific gene insertions. We found that the MITI strategy yielded higher knock-in accuracy than Cas9 HITI for the insertion of external DNA and tagging endogenous genes. Furthermore, in combination with negative selection and four different CrRNAs targeting donor vectors and genome-targeted sites with a CrRNA array, MITI facilitated precise ligation at all junctions. Therefore, our Cas12a-based MITI method increases the repertoire of precision genome engineering approaches and provides a useful tool for various gene editing applications.
