A chain of Josephson junctions represents one of the simplest many-body models undergoing a superconductor–insulator quantum phase transition1,2. Apart from zero resistance, the superconducting state ...is necessarily accompanied by a sound-like mode due to collective oscillations of the phase of the complex-valued order parameter3,4. Little is known about the fate of this mode on entering the insulating state, where the order parameter’s amplitude remains non-zero, but the phase ordering is ‘melted’ by quantum fluctuations5. Here, we show that the phase mode survives far into the insulating regime, such that megaohm-resistance chains can carry gigahertz-frequency alternating currents as nearly ideal superconductors. The insulator reveals itself through interaction-induced broadening and random frequency shifts of collective mode resonances. Our spectroscopic experiment puts forward the problem of quantum electrodynamics of a Bose glass for both theory and experiment6–8. By pushing the chain parameters deeper into the insulating state, we achieved a wave impedance of the phase mode exceeding the predicted critical value by an order of magnitude9–14. The effective fine structure constant of such a one-dimensional electromagnetic vacuum exceeds unity, promising transformative applications to quantum science and technology.
Infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) accounts for 50-80% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development worldwide, in which the HBV-encoded X protein (HBx) has critical role in the induction of ...carcinogenesis. Several studies have shown that thyroid hormone (TH) suppresses HCC development and protects hepatocytes from HBx-induced damage, thus it is of interest to examine whether TH can protect hepatocytes from HBx-induced carcinogenesis. By treating HBx- transgenic mice with or without TH, we confirmed the protective effects of TH on HBx-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, which was achieved via reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) inflicted DNA damage. We further found that TH induced biogenesis of mitochondria (MITO) and autophagy of HBx-targeted MITO simultaneously, consequently leading to suppression of HBx-promoted ROS and carcinogenesis. Using microarray data analysis, this protective effect of TH was found to be mediated via activation of PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) in hepatocytes. PINK1, in turn, activated and recruited Parkin, an E3 ligase, to ubiquitinate MITO-associated HBx protein and trigger selective mitophagy. The pathological significance of the TH/PINK1 pathway in liver protection was confirmed by the concomitant decrease in expression of both TR and PINK1 in matched HCC tumor tissues and negatively correlated with aggressive progression of cancer and poor prognosis. Our data indicate that TH/PINK1/Parkin pathway has a critical role in protecting hepatocytes from HBx-induced carcinogenesis. Notably, several liver-targeting therapeutic derivatives of TH facilitating prevention or therapy of steatosis have been identified. Furthermore, our proof-of-concept experiments suggest that application of T
constitutes an effective novel therapeutic or preventive option for HCC. Thus, the utilization of the agonists of TRs could be the meaningful strategy in liver relative diseases, ranging from simple hepatic steatosis to HCC.
Translanguaging theories emphasize a fluid, dynamic view of language and differ from code-switching/mixing theories by de-centring the analytic focus from the language(s) being used in the ...interaction to the speakers who are making meaning and constructing original and complex discursive practices. Trans-semiotizing theories further broaden the focus to analyse language as entangled with many other semiotics (e.g. visuals, gestures, bodily movement) in meaning making. In this paper recent developments in trans/languaging and trans-semiotizing theories are discussed in conjunction with fine-grained classroom analyses to illustrate the key role played by trans/languaging and trans-semiotizing practices in the dialogic construal of content meaning in content-based education.
SPIDERS (The SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is a programme dedicated to the homogeneous and complete spectroscopic follow-up of X-ray active galactic nuclei and galaxy clusters over ...a large area (~7500 deg super( 2)) of the extragalactic sky. SPIDERS is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-IV project, together with the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and the Time-Domain Spectroscopic Survey. This paper describes the largest project within SPIDERS before the launch of eROSITA: an optical spectroscopic survey of X-ray-selected, massive (~10 super( 14)-10 super( 15) M...) galaxy clusters discovered in ROSAT and XMM-Newton imaging. The immediate aim is to determine precise (... ~ 0.001) redshifts for 4000-5000 of these systems out to z ~ 0.6. The scientific goal of the program is precision cosmology, using clusters as probes of large-scale structure in the expanding Universe. We present the cluster samples, target selection algorithms and observation strategies. We demonstrate the efficiency of selecting targets using a combination of SDSS imaging data, a robust red-sequence finder and a dedicated prioritization scheme. We describe a set of algorithms and work-flow developed to collate spectra and assign cluster membership, and to deliver catalogues of spectroscopically confirmed clusters. We discuss the relevance of line-of-sight velocity dispersion estimators for the richer systems. We illustrate our techniques by constructing a catalogue of 230 spectroscopically validated clusters (0.031 < z < 0.658), found in pilot observations. We discuss two potential science applications of the SPIDERS sample: the study of the X-ray luminosity-velocity dispersion (L sub( X)-...) relation and the building of stacked phase-space diagrams. A detailed study on the mechanism of band-to-band tunneling in carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) is presented. Through a dual-gated CNFET structure tunneling currents from the valence ...into the conduction band and vice versa can be enabled or disabled by changing the gate potential. Different from a conventional device where the Fermi distribution ultimately limits the gate voltage range for switching the device on or off, current flow is controlled here by the valence and conduction band edges in a bandpass-filter-like arrangement. We discuss how the structure of the nanotube is the key enabler of this particular one-dimensional tunneling effect.
This nationwide study aimed to provide risk estimates for a panel of infections subsequent to pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) in Taiwan. In this study, we selected 12 050 patients diagnosed with PLA ...as our study cohort and 60 250 non-PLA patients as our comparison cohort. We individually tracked each subject for a 1-year period beginning with their index date to identify those who were subsequently diagnosed with any of the following infections: pneumonia, endophthalmitis, septic pulmonary embolism, pulmonary abscess, pleural empyema, meningitis, abscess of prostate, renal and perinephric abscess, epidural spinal abscess, osteomyelitis, necrotizing fasciitis, splenic abscess, psoas abscess and infectious endocarditis. We found that during the 1-year follow-up period, the subjects with PLA had a consistently higher incidence of all types of infections than comparison subjects. In particular, compared with subjects without PLA, the adjusted hazard ratios (HR) of pulmonary abscess, pleural empyema, renal and perinephric abscess, epidural spinal abscess and splenic abscess were 26.71, 18.56, 43.21, 51.32 and 126.51, respectively. We further analysed the HR of extra-hepatic Klebsiella pneumoniae infections among patients with PLA caused by K. pneumoniae. We found that the HR was higher for 12 of the 15 analysed extra-hepatic infections after restricting the analysis to only infections with K. pneumoniae aetiologies.
Channelrhodopsins (ChRs) are light‐activated channels from algae that provide these organisms with fast sensors to visible light for phototaxis. Since its discovery, channelrhodopsin‐2 (ChR2) has ...been used as a research tool to depolarize membranes of excitable cells with light. Subsequent chimeragenesis, mutagenesis and bioinformatic approaches have introduced additional ChR variants, such as channelrhodopsin‐2 with H134R mutation (ChR2/H134R), channelrhodopsin‐2 with E123T mutation (ChETA), Volvox carteri channelrhodopsin‐1 (VChR1), Volvox carteri channelrhodopsin‐2 (VChR2), channelrhodopsin‐2 with C128 or D156A mutations (ChR2/C128X/D156A), chimera D (ChD), chimera EF (ChEF) and chimera EF with I170V mutation (I170V). Each of these ChR variuants has unique features and limitations, but there are few resources summarizing and comparing these ChRs in a systematic manner. In this review, the seven following key properties of ChRs that have significant influences on their effectiveness as research tools are examined: conductance, selectivity, kinetics, desensitization, light sensitivity, spectral response and membrane trafficking. Using this information, valuable qualities and deficits of each ChR variant are summarized. Optimal uses and potential future improvements of ChRs as optogenetic tools are also discussed.
Background and purpose
Recent genome‐wide association studies have shown associations between multiple genetic variants and primary restless legs syndrome (RLS). Their roles in end stage renal ...disease (ESRD) related secondary RLS are not clear and studies in Asian populations are scarce. The association between candidate genetic variants and uremic RLS was investigated in a large cohort of Taiwanese dialysis patients.
Methods
Sixteen RLS‐related genetic variants at six loci, including MEIS1, BTBD9, MAP2K5/SKOR1, PTPRD, TOX3/BC034767 and the intergenic region of chromosome 2p14, in a total of 993 ESRD patients (259 subjects with and 734 subjects without RLS) were genotyped using TaqMan® genotyping assays. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to test for associations between the genotypes and RLS in ESRD. Power calculations were completed using the CATs Genetic Power Calculator with settings of a multiplicative genetic model.
Results
A modest association between the PTPRD variant rs4626664 and uremic RLS (odds ratio 1.52, 95% CI 1.03–2.23, P = 0.03) and a trend that TOX3/BC034767 variant rs3104767 may associate with the occurrence of RLS were observed in our dialysis population (odds ratio 1.74, 95% CI 0.97–3.11, P = 0.06). No associations between other genetic variants and risk and severity of RLS were observed in our ESRD cohort.
Conclusions
The genetic variants of primary RLS candidate genes did not play a major role in our uremic RLS populations. The ethnic difference and heterogeneous etiologies underlying renal failure may partly explain the minor genetic contribution to uremic RLS in our populations. Further studies for other ethnicities will be of worth.
