We present a new catalog of TeV gamma-ray sources using 1523 days of data from the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. The catalog represents the most sensitive survey of the northern ...gamma-ray sky at energies above several TeV, with three times the exposure compared to the previous HAWC catalog, 2HWC. We report 65 sources detected at ≥5 significance, along with the positions and spectral fits for each source. The catalog contains eight sources that have no counterpart in the 2HWC catalog, but are within 1° of previously detected TeV emitters, and 20 sources that are more than 1° away from any previously detected TeV source. Of these 20 new sources, 14 have a potential counterpart in the fourth Fermi Large Area Telescope catalog of gamma-ray sources. We also explore potential associations of 3HWC sources with pulsars in the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) pulsar catalog and supernova remnants in the Galactic supernova remnant catalog.
The 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516 presents a strong time variability in X-rays. We re-analyzed the nine observations performed in 2006 October by XMM-Newton and Chandra in the 0.3 to 10 keV energy ...band. The model consists of a continuum emission component (power law + blackbody) absorbed by four ionized components (warm absorbers), and 10 narrow emission lines. We study the time response of the absorbing components to the well-detected changes in the X-ray luminosity of this source and find that the two components with the lower ionization state show clear opacity changes consistent with gas close to photo-ionization equilibrium. We also search for variations in the covering factor of the ionized absorbers. We find no correlation between the change in covering factor and the flux of the source. This, in connection with the observed variability of the ionized absorbers, suggests that the changes in flux are not produced by this material. If the variations are indeed produced by obscuring clumps of gas, these must be located much closer in to the central source.
Context. Fairall 51 is a polar-scattered Seyfert 1 galaxy, a type of active galaxy believed to represent a bridge between unobscured type-1 and obscured type-2 objects. Fairall 51 has shown complex ...and variable X-ray absorption, but little is known about its origin. Aims. In our research, we observed Fairall 51 with the X-ray satellite Suzaku in order to constrain a characteristic time scale of its variability. Methods. We performed timing and spectral analysis of four observations separated by 1.5, 2, and 5.5 day intervals. Results. We found that the 0.5–50 keV broadband X-ray spectra are dominated by a primary power-law emission (with the photon index ~2). This emission is affected by at least three absorbers with different ionisations (log ξ ≈ 1–4). The spectrum is shaped further by a reprocessed emission, possibly coming from two regions, the accretion disc and a more distant scattering region. The accretion disc emission is smeared by the relativistic effects, from which we measured the spin of the black hole as a ≈ 0.8 ± 0.2. We found that most of the spectral variability can be attributed to the least ionised absorber whose column density changed by a factor of two between the first (highest-flux) and the last (lowest-flux) observation. Conclusions. A week-long scale of the variability indicates that the absorber is located at the distance ≈0.05 pc from the centre, i.e., in the broad line region.
We present the first catalog of gamma-ray sources emitting above 56 and 100 TeV with data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory, a wide field-of-view observatory capable of detecting ...gamma rays up to a few hundred TeV. Nine sources are observed above 56 TeV, all of which are likely galactic in origin. Three sources continue emitting past 100 TeV, making this the highest-energy gamma-ray source catalog to date. We report the integral flux of each of these objects. We also report spectra for three highest-energy sources and discuss the possibility that they are PeVatrons.
We present the first catalog of TeV gamma-ray sources realized with data from the newly completed High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC). It is the most sensitive wide field-of-view TeV ...telescope currently in operation, with a one-year survey sensitivity of ∼5%-10% of the flux of the Crab Nebula. With an instantaneous field of view >1.5 sr and >90% duty cycle, it continuously surveys and monitors the sky for gamma-ray energies between hundreds of GeV and tens of TeV. HAWC is located in Mexico, at a latitude of 19° N, and was completed in 2015 March. Here, we present the 2HWC catalog, which is the result of the first source search performed with the complete HAWC detector. Realized with 507 days of data, it represents the most sensitive TeV survey to date for such a large fraction of the sky. A total of 39 sources were detected, with an expected number of false detections of 0.5 due to background fluctuation. Out of these sources, 19 are new sources that are not associated with previously known TeV sources (association criteria: <0 5 away). The source list, including the position measurement, spectrum measurement, and uncertainties, is reported, then each source is briefly discussed. Of the 2HWC associated sources, 10 are reported in TeVCat as PWN or SNR: 2 as blazars and the remaining eight as unidentified.
We present an analysis of hard X-ray features in the spectrum of the bright Sy 1 galaxy Mrk 335 observed by the XMM–Newton satellite. Our analysis confirms the presence of a broad, ionized Fe Kα ...emission line in the spectrum, first found by Gondoin et al. The broad line can be modelled successfully by relativistic accretion disc reflection models. This interpretation is unusually robust in the case of Mrk 335 because of the lack of any ionized (‘warm’) absorber and the absence a clear narrow core to the line. Partial covering by neutral gas cannot, however, be ruled out statistically as the origin of the broad residuals. Regardless of the underlying continuum we report, for the first time in this source, the detection of a narrow absorption feature at the rest frame energy of ∼5.9 keV. If the feature is identified with a resonance absorption line of iron in a highly ionized medium, the redshift of the line corresponds to an inflow velocity of ∼0.11–0.15c. We present a simple model for the inflow, accounting approximately for relativistic and radiation pressure effects, and use Monte Carlo methods to compute synthetic spectra for qualitative comparison with the data. This modelling shows that the absorption feature can plausibly be reproduced by infalling gas providing that the feature is identified with Fe xxvi. We require the inflowing gas to extend over a limited range of radii at a few tens of rg to match the observed feature. The mass accretion rate in the flow corresponds to 60 per cent of the Eddington limit, in remarkable agreement with the observed rate. The narrowness of the absorption line tends to argue against a purely gravitational origin for the redshift of the line, but given the current data quality we stress that such an interpretation cannot be ruled out.
Context. Spectroscopy of X-ray emission lines emitted from accretion discs around supermassive black holes is one of the most powerful probes of the accretion flow physics and geometry, while also ...providing in principle observational constraints on the black hole spin. Previous studies have suggested that relativistically broadened line profiles are fairly common in nearby unobscured Seyfert galaxies. Their strength, as parametrised by the equivalent width (EW) against the total underlying continuum, spans a range of almost two orders of magnitude. Aims. We attempt to determine the ultimate physical driver of the strength of this relativistic reprocessing feature. Methods. We first extend the hard X-ray flux-limited sample of Seyfert galaxies studied so far in the framework of the FERO (Finding Extreme Relativistic Objects) project to obscured objects up to a column density NH = 6 × 1023 cm-2. We verify that none of the line properties depends on the AGN optical classification, as expected from the Seyfert unification scenarios. There is also no correlation between the accretion disc inclination, as derived from formal fits of the line profiles, and the optical type or host galaxy aspect angle, suggesting that the innermost regions of the accretion disc and the host galaxy plane are not aligned. We use this extended sample to study the dependence of the EW on various observables, and compare it with the predictions of Monte Carlo accretion-disc reprocessing simulation. Results. The behaviour of the EW as a function of disc inclination, shape of the intrinsic power-law nuclear continuum, or iron abundance does not agree with the simulation predictions. Our observational data are not sensitive enough to the detailed ionisation state of the line-emitting disc. However, the lack of dependence of the line EW on either the luminosity or the rest-frame centroid energy rules out disc ionisation playing an important role on the EW dynamical range in Seyferts. Conclusions. The dynamical range of the relativistically broadened Kα iron line EW in nearby Seyferts appears to be mainly determined by the properties of the innermost accretion flow. We discuss several mechanisms (disc ionisation, disc truncation, and aberration due to a mildly relativistic outflowing corona) that can explain this. We stress that the above results represent neither a falsification or proof of the relativistically blurring scenario. Observational data still do not contradict scenarios invoking different mechanisms for the spectral complexity around the iron line, most notably the “partial covering” absorption scenario.

We present results from our ongoing monitoring programs aimed at identifying and understanding Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in extreme flux and spectral states. Observations of AGN in extreme states ...can reveal the nature of the inner accretion flow, the physics of matter under strong gravity, and they provide insight on the properties of ionized absorbers and outflows launched near supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We present new results from our long-term monitoring of IC 3599, WPVS007, and Mrk 335, multi-wavelength follow-ups of the newly identified changing-look AGN HE 1136–2304, and UV–X-ray follow-ups of the binary SMBH candidate OJ 287 after its 2015 optical maximum, now in a new optical-X-ray–high-state.
