This paper describes a highly efficient method for lossless compression of volumetric sets of medical images, such as CTs or MRIs. The proposed method, referred to as 3-D-MRP, is based on the ...principle of minimum rate predictors (MRPs), which is one of the state-of-the-art lossless compression technologies presented in the data compression literature. The main features of the proposed method include the use of 3-D predictors, 3-D-block octree partitioning and classification, volume-based optimization, and support for 16-b-depth images. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the 3-D-MRP algorithm for the compression of volumetric sets of medical images, achieving gains above 15% and 12% for 8- and 16-bit-depth contents, respectively, when compared with JPEG-LS, JPEG2000, CALIC, and HEVC, as well as other proposals based on the MRP algorithm.
Renewable energy sources are growing in importance and reshaping power systems through microgrid (MG) networks. Some relevant issues in the management of an MG need to be addressed, such as voltage ...and frequency control, power balance between sources (sharing) and distributed loads, stability, security, power quality, etc. As a contribution, this manuscript presents a power management of AC MGs based on concepts of microeconomics theory for market equilibrium. The prices of active and reactive energy are informed through the AC voltage parameters such as magnitude, frequency and angle. This approach allows several sources and loads to operate with no extra communication interface. Experiments are provided to validate operation in many different operational scenarios using a hardware-in-the-loop environment.
Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonosis caused by pathogenic Leptospira spp. It is an important infectious disease that affects humans and animals. The disease causes economic losses as it affects ...livestock, with decreased milk production and death. Our group is investigating the genome sequences of L. interrogans targeting surface-exposed proteins because, due to their location, these proteins are capable to interact with several host components that could allow establishment of the infection. These interactions may involve adhesion of the bacteria to extracellular matrix (ECM) components and, hence, help bacterial colonization. The bacteria could also react with the host fibrinolytic system and/or with the coagulation cascade components, such as, plasminogen (PLG) and fibrinogen (Fg), respectively. The binding with the first system generates plasmin (PLA), increasing the proteolytic power of the bacteria, while the second interferes with clotting in a thrombin-catalyzed reaction, which may promote hemorrhage foci and increase bacterial dissemination. Interaction with the complement system negative regulators may help bacteria to evade the host immune system, facilitating the invasion. This work compiles the main described leptospiral proteins that could act as adhesins, as PLG and fibrinogen receptors and as complement regulator binding proteins. We present models in which we suggest possible mechanisms of how leptospires might colonize and invade host tissues, causing the disease. Understanding leptospiral pathogenesis will help to identify antigen candidates that would contribute to the development of more effective vaccines and diagnostic tests.
Directional intra prediction plays an important role in current state-of-the-art video coding standards. In directional prediction, neighbouring samples are projected along a specific direction to ...predict a block of samples. Ultimately, each prediction mode can be regarded as a set of very simple linear predictors, a different one for each pixel of a block. Therefore, a natural question that arises is whether one could use the theory of linear prediction in order to generate intra prediction modes that provide increased coding efficiency. However, such an interpretation of each directional mode as a set of linear predictors is too poor to provide useful insights for their design. In this paper, we introduce an interpretation of directional prediction as a particular case of linear prediction, which uses the first-order linear filters and a set of geometric transformations. This interpretation motivated the proposal of a generalized intra prediction framework, whereby the first-order linear filters are replaced by adaptive linear filters with sparsity constraints. In this context, we investigate the use of efficient sparse linear models, adaptively estimated for each block through the use of different algorithms, such as matching pursuit, least angle regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, or elastic net. The proposed intra prediction framework was implemented and evaluated within the state-of-the-art high efficiency video coding standard. Experiments demonstrated the advantage of this predictive solution, mainly in the presence of images with complex features and textured areas, achieving higher average bitrate savings than other related sparse representation methods proposed in the literature.
A complete encoding solution for efficient intra-based depth map compression is proposed in this paper. The algorithm, denominated predictive depth coding (PDC), was specifically developed to ...efficiently represent the characteristics of depth maps, mostly composed by smooth areas delimited by sharp edges. At its core, PDC involves a directional intra prediction framework and a straightforward residue coding method, combined with an optimized flexible block partitioning scheme. In order to improve the algorithm in the presence of depth edges that cannot be efficiently predicted by the directional modes, a constrained depth modeling mode, based on explicit edge representation, was developed. For residue coding, a simple and low complexity approach was investigated, using constant and linear residue modeling, depending on the prediction mode. The performance of the proposed intra depth map coding approach was evaluated based on the quality of the synthesized views using the encoded depth maps and original texture views. The experimental tests based on all intra configuration demonstrated the superior rate-distortion performance of PDC, with average bitrate savings of 6%, when compared with the current state-of-the-art intra depth map coding solution present in the 3D extension of a high-efficiency video coding (3D-HEVC) standard. By using view synthesis optimization in both PDC and 3D-HEVC encoders, the average bitrate savings increase to 14.3%. This suggests that the proposed method, without using transform-based residue coding, is an efficient alternative to the current 3D-HEVC algorithm for intra depth map coding.

Red and ...processed meat consumption has been strongly related to increase the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), although its impact is largely unknown. Hemin, an iron-containing porphyrin, is acknowledged as a putative factor of red and processed meat pro-carcinogenic effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of high dietary hemin on the promotion/progression stages of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (1,2-DMH)-induced colon carcinogenesis. Twenty-four Wistar male rats were given four subcutaneous 1,2-DMH injections and received either balanced diet or balanced diet supplemented with hemin 0.5 mmol/kg for 23 weeks. Colon specimens were analyzed for aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and tumor development. Dietary hemin significantly increased ACF number and fecal water cytotoxicity/genotoxicity in Caco-2 cells when compared to 1,2-DMH control group. However, tumor incidence, multiplicity and cell proliferation did not differ between 1,2-DMH + hemin and 1,2-DMH control group. Gene expression analysis of 91 target-genes revealed that only three genes (Figf, Pik3r5 and Tgfbr2) were down-regulated in the tumors from hemin-fed rats compared to those from 1,2-DMH control group. Therefore, the findings of this study show that high hemin intake promotes mainly DNA damage and ACF development and but does not change the number nor incidence of colon tumors induced by 1,2-DMH in male rats.
The Multidimensional Multiscale Parser (MMP) is a pattern-matching-based generic image encoding solution which has been investigated earlier for the compression of stereo images with successful ...results. While first MMP-based proposals for stereo image coding employed dictionary-based techniques for disparity compensation, posterior developments have demonstrated the advantage of using predictive methods. In this paper, we focus on recent investigations on the use of predictive methods in the MMP algorithm and propose a new prediction framework for efficient stereo image coding. This framework comprises an advanced intra directional prediction model and a new linear predictive scheme for efficient disparity compensation. The linear prediction model is the main novelty of this work, combining adaptive linear models estimated by least-squares algorithm with fixed linear models provided by the block-matching algorithm. The performance of the proposed intra prediction and disparity compensation methods when applied in an MMP encoder has been evaluated experimentally. Comparisons with the current stereo image coding standards showed that the proposed MMP algorithm significantly outperforms the Stereo High Profile of H.264/AVC standard. In addition, it presents a competitive performance relative to the MV-HEVC standard. These results also suggest that current stereo image coding standards may benefit from the proposed linear prediction scheme for disparity compensation, as an extension to the omnipresent block-matching solution.
This research evaluated the possible use of tropical hardwood species (Myrocarpus frondosus and Ocotea porosa) for grilling plank production. Physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties were ...evaluated and compared with properties of a well-used wood species for grilling planks, western red cedar (Thuja plicata). For chemical analysis, one technique was used: hydrodistillation. Normality tests and analyses of variance (ANOVA) were used for the comparisons between Thuja plicata and tropical hardwoods. The results of the organoleptic, chemical, and statistical analyses demonstrated the possibility of using Myrocarpus frondosus and Ocotea porosa in grilling plank production.

Bacillus was the predominant genus (51%). Gram-negative species of the genera
Serratia,
Enterobacter and
Acinetobacter were also found. Approximately 22% of 940 randomly chosen isolates of microorganisms were yeasts.
Debaryomyces (27%),
Pichia (18.9%) and
Candida (8.0%) were the most commonly found genera, and these three genera tended to appear more often as the fruit was fermented and dried.
Aspergillus was the most abundant genus besides
Penicillium, Fusarium and
Cladosporium, with 42.6% of the total fungi isolates. The genera and species identified included members known to have pectinase and cellulase activities. Of the 10 organic acids analyzed and quantified in coffee beans, acetic and lactic acids may have been generated by microbial activity. Butyric acid was not detected in any sample.
