17-Hydroxypregnenolone (3β, 17α-dihydroxypregn-5-en-20-one) and pregnenolone (3β-hydroxypregn-5-en-20-one) were determined by radioimmunoassay following HPLC separation in serum of healthy subjects ...of both sexes from 2 to 66 years old (29 girls, 85 women, 30 boys, 89 men). The effects of age and sex on the levels of both steroids were investigated and the upper limits of normal in age groups were determined. The 17-hydroxypregnenolone levels as a function of age were characterized by a statistically significant maximum at the age of 18 and 20 years followed by a local minimum at the age of 39 and 37 years and by a statistically insignificant local maximum at the age of 55 and 49 years in men and women, respectively. Pregnenolone age-dependence was similar and the statistically significant maximum was reached at the age of 17 and 16 years, the local minimum occurred at the age of 37 and 38 years and the second, statistically insignificant, local maximum at the age of 48 and 47 years in men and women, respectively. Both 17-hydroxypregnenolone and pregnenolone in both sexes exhibited similarly shaped peaks with age. Both peaks of the polynomial fit in 17-hydroxypregnenolone were more pronounced in men than in women (13.0 and 9.20 nmol/l in the first peak; 7.72 and 4.78 in the second peak respectively). The situation with pregnenolone was the opposite. Both peaks of the polynomial fit in pregnenolone were lower in men than in women (2.29 and 3.21 nmol/l in the first peak; 0.92 and 1.78 in the second peak, respectively). The higher serum levels of pregnenolone at puberty and during fertile age and their wider variance in comparison with men could, be explained by the different gonadal steroidogenesis depending on the menstrual cycle, where the pregnenolone serves as a substrate for progesterone formation. The age dependencies of 17-hydroxypregnenolone and pregnenolone in women resembled that of unconjugated dehydroepiandrosterone. These results indicate that the increased metabolic activity in gonads in adolescence concerns not only dehydroepiandrosterone as the product of the 5-ene metabolic pathway but also its precursors.
An observational study of growth performance was performed with Krškopolje pigs reared in extensive (EXT) and intensive (INT) production system. Pigs in INT system (n=6) were housed indoors and ...received a complete feed mixture, while EXT pigs (n=6) were kept in combined indoor/outdoor system and were fed a traditional meal (cooked root crops) and a mixture of ground grains. Growth performance and meat quality traits of longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle of pigs were assessed. Pigs were monitored from 86 to 224 days of age and were weighed 4-times (at 86, 129, 195, 224 days) with 4 growth stages (25-45, 45-75, 75-90 and 90-120 kg) considered. Overall INT pigs achieved 49 % higher daily gain and were heavier at slaughter than EXT pigs (88 vs. 120 kg, P<0.001). Growth rate of INT and EXT pigs was similar (443 vs. 464 g/day) from 25-45 kg, whereas EXT pigs grew slower than INT pigs in the periods 45-75 and 75-90 kg (445 vs. 853 and 505 vs 893 g/day, respectively). In the last period (90-120 kg) only INT pigs were monitored and they exhibited a decline in growth rate (580 g/day) compared to the previous two periods. Due to higher body weight (BW) at slaughter, INT had thicker backfat than EXT pigs (40 vs. 22 mm, P<0.000), however at equal BW (88 kg), no differences were noted. EXT pigs exhibited lower CIE L* (P=0.044) and higher CIE a* (P=0.003) colour parameters of LD (i.e. darker, redder LD colour), indicative of more oxidative muscle metabolism of EXT pigs.
Insulating ceramic films, which have the property of being hard and corrosion resistant, are good candidates for corrosion protection coatings. Al
2O
3 has the additional advantage that it is ...transparent. Therefore it is used as protective coating in many fields, such as microelectronics and laser optics. Ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) provides a good means for depositing stoichiometric Al
2O
3 coatings, which have a very good adhesion, on any kind of vacuum compatible materials.
Earlier studies already showed that IBAD Al
2O
3 coatings act as corrosion protection coatings against pitting of aluminium. The present paper deals with its protection ability against uniform corrosion of mild steel.
The Al
2O
3 coatings were prepared with ion beam assisted deposition using three different deposition modes: (1) evaporation of Al in an oxygen atmosphere under bombardment with Ar ions; (2) evaporation of Al in an oxygen atmosphere under bombardment with O ions; (3) evaporation of Al
2O
3 under bombardment with Ar ions. In all cases appropriate combinations of the process parameters, namely the ion energy, the ion to atom arrival ratio
I/A, and the backfilling gas pressure, were chosen in order to deposit stoichiometric Al
2O
3.
The electrochemical and corrosion behaviour were determined by current/potential measurements under conditions for uniform corrosion attack.
The results showed that the Al
2O
3 coatings considerably increase the resistance of steel against uniform corrosion. In the examined range the modes of deposition do not significantly influence the corrosion protection effect. However, there is a distinct influence of the ion energy and the
I/A ratio on the protective power. It can be concluded, that, up to a certain level, an increase of the power input per condensing atom during the growth of the Al
2O
3 films leads to an increased protection ability.
Experimental results are presented on the normal and short circuit operating characteristics of metallic shielded solid dielectric power cable. Test data on thermal runs of single conductor shielded ...power cable under typical installation conditions confirm published ampacity data1, and hence the theoretical procedure2 employed for calculating the ampacity of single conductor cable with circulating current losses. The thermal runs also point out the possible adverse effect on the cable of operating at a high interface temperature for an extended period of time.

According to studies so far it seems that elderly people are more vulnerable to severe symptoms while children tend to by asymptomatic or have milder form the disease. In our review, we focused on gathering data about the virus itself, its characteristics, paths of transmission, and its effect on hormone production and secretion. In such, there is insufficient information in the literature worldwide, especially the ones that focus on the effect of COVID-19 on individual organs systems within the human body.
