Iron in anaerobic groundwater is commonly removed by oxidation followed by sand filtration. This produces large volumes of iron(III)(hydr)oxide sludge with little value. Our research investigates the novel concept of anaerobic iron(II) recovery from groundwater as the valuable mineral vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2 • 8 H2O) by the addition of phosphate to the water. We found that vivianite precipitated both in synthetic and natural groundwater when the saturation index (SI) was higher than 4. The SI can be increased by elevating the pH, which allows for iron removal at lower concentrations. Anaerobic iron removal reached 93.7% in natural groundwater, which increased further to 99.9% after a subsequent aeration step. Vivianite precipitation followed second order kinetics with a rate constant of 2.3 M−1s−1 and the sludge volume decreased by two third compared to iron oxidation. We therefore conclude that anaerobic iron removal is a promising new approach towards sustainable groundwater treatment.

How multidomain RNA-binding proteins recognize their specific target sequences, based on a combinatorial code, represents a fundamental unsolved question and has not been studied systematically so ...far. Here we focus on a prototypical multidomain RNA-binding protein, IMP3 (also called IGF2BP3), which contains six RNA-binding domains (RBDs): four KH and two RRM domains. We establish an integrative systematic strategy, combining single-domain-resolved SELEX-seq, motif-spacing analyses, in vivo iCLIP, functional validation assays, and structural biology. This approach identifies the RNA-binding specificity and RNP topology of IMP3, involving all six RBDs and a cluster of up to five distinct and appropriately spaced CA-rich and GGC-core RNA elements, covering a >100 nucleotide-long target RNA region. Our generally applicable approach explains both specificity and flexibility of IMP3-RNA recognition, allows the prediction of IMP3 targets, and provides a paradigm for the function of multivalent interactions with multidomain RNA-binding proteins in gene regulation.
Spatio-temporal pattern recognition is a fundamental ability of the brain which is required for numerous real-world activities. Recent deep learning approaches have reached outstanding accuracies in ...such tasks, but their implementation on conventional embedded solutions is still very computationally and energy expensive. Tactile sensing in robotic applications is a representative example where real-time processing and energy efficiency are required. Following a brain-inspired computing approach, we propose a new benchmark for spatio-temporal tactile pattern recognition at the edge through Braille letter reading. We recorded a new Braille letters dataset based on the capacitive tactile sensors of the iCub robot's fingertip. We then investigated the importance of spatial and temporal information as well as the impact of event-based encoding on spike-based computation. Afterward, we trained and compared feedforward and recurrent Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) offline using Backpropagation Through Time (BPTT) with surrogate gradients, then we deployed them on the Intel Loihi neuromorphic chip for fast and efficient inference. We compared our approach to standard classifiers, in particular to the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deployed on the embedded NVIDIA Jetson GPU, in terms of classification accuracy, power, and energy consumption together with computational delay. Our results show that the LSTM reaches ~97% of accuracy, outperforming the recurrent SNN by ~17% when using continuous frame-based data instead of event-based inputs. However, the recurrent SNN on Loihi with event-based inputs is ~500 times more energy-efficient than the LSTM on Jetson, requiring a total power of only ~30 mW. This work proposes a new benchmark for tactile sensing and highlights the challenges and opportunities of event-based encoding, neuromorphic hardware, and spike-based computing for spatio-temporal pattern recognition at the edge.
Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) is a phosphaturic hormone used to monitor chronic kidney disease (CKD) in humans. The aim of this pilot study was to compare three diagnostic assays and to assess ...how the results correlate with parameters of renal dysfunction in cats. Four groups of 10 cats each were formed retrospectively according to creatinine, based on IRIS staging. FGF-23 was measured using two different ELISAs (MyBioSource and Kainos ELISA FGF-23 Kit) and an automated assay on the DiaSorin Liaison platform. Measurements were performed in 40 cats. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient showed a strong correlation between the Kainos and DiaSorin assays (ρ = 0.742/p < 0.001) and a low correlation (ρ = 0.443/p = 0.005) between the Kainos and MyBioSource assays. The measurements with the Kainos assay strongly correlated with urea (ρ = 0.835/p < 0.001) and creatinine (ρ = 0.764/p < 0.001), and moderately correlated with SDMA (ρ = 0.580/p < 0.001) and phosphorus (ρ = 0.532/p < 0.001). The results of the MyBioSource and DiaSorin assays only showed a moderate correlation with urea (ρ = 0.624/0.572) and creatinine (ρ = 0.622/0.510) concentrations (p = 0.001 each). The Kainos assay showed the strongest correlation (ρ = 0.806) with the various creatinine concentrations according to the IRIS, followed by the MyBioSource (ρ = 0.663/p < 0.001) and DiaSorin assays (ρ = 0.580/p < 0.001). Overall, the Kainos assay demonstrated the best correlations with both biomarkers and various creatinine concentrations according to the IRIS. Individual assay-based reference values should be established to make a reliable interpretation of FGF-23 levels possible to diagnose or monitor feline CKD.
Topical corticosteroid concerns (TCC) are an important issue in patients with atopic dermatitis, leading to non-adherence with poor disease control and increased health care costs. However, neither ...the prevalence of TCC in a more comprehensible dermatological population nor the impact of patient information on topical corticosteroids given by clinicians is known. Therefore, we assessed the prevalence, characteristics, and sources of TCC in a dermatological population and the impact of written and oral patient information on TCC.
A total of 643 outpatients with various skin diseases answered a 12-item questionnaire while waiting for the doctor's visit. Patients with TCC quantified their concerns on a discrete visual analogue scale before and after patient information, which consisted of written and oral information about topical corticosteroids (TCS) given by dermatologists.
The prevalence of TCC was 41.5%, and that of TCC-related non-adherence was 28.3%. TCC was positively associated with age <60 years, female gender, use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and non-physician health care profession. The leading concerns were skin atrophy, systemic effects, and impairment of the immune system. The most frequent sources of TCC were negative reports by media, family, or friends. Both written and oral patient information significantly reduced TCC. The number needed to benefit from patient information was approximately 2. Non-responders were more often female, TCS-inexperienced, and users of CAM with an intermediate level of education.
TCC are highly prevalent in dermatological patients. Patient information may lower TCC in almost every second patient.

The thermodynamic parameters, including the degradation, glass transition and crystallization temperatures, are measured using DSC and TGA. Based on these data, the solid-liquid equilibrium phase diagrams are calculated for the ideal case and predictions are made using the semi-predictive UNIFAC and the predictive COSMO RS models, the latter with two different parametrization levels. For each system, the ideal, experimental, and predicted eutectic points are obtained. The deviation from ideality is observed experimentally and using the thermodynamic models for Thymol:Borneol and Thymol:Camphor. In contrast, a negative deviation is observed only experimentally for Menthol:Borneol and Menthol:Camphor. Moreover, the chemical interactions are analyzed using FTIR and
H-NMR to study the intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the systems.
This article describes a flight simulator study to validate a new command control system for longitudinal load factor n x . The system is called nxControl and actuates thrust, speedbrakes, and wheel ...brakes that directly influence the total energy state of the aircraft. It aims at manually flying with higher precision and lower workload. After a brief overview of the functionality of nxControl and its cockpit interfaces, the key results of earlier proof-of-concept simulator studies are summarized. The focus lies on the comprehensive flight simulator study with 24 airline pilots to conclusively evaluate the complete system. The task was a highly demanding approach trajectory containing segmented-continuous-descent in gusty wind conditions, touch-down, deceleration, and taxi as well as engine failure at low altitude. With nxControl, the pilots achieved higher precision in airspeed and energy control with lower workload compared to conventional manual thrust control. In addition, nxControl achieved safety benefits in case of an engine failure.

Nevertheless, there is a demand for intraoperative fluorescent identification of e.g. invasive skull base meningiomas to increase radicality. This study was established to investigate fluorescent image-guided resection with somatostatin receptor labelled fluorescence dye for intracranial meningioma in the nude mice.
Primary meningioma cell culture samples were stereotactically implanted subdural into 20 nude mice. 90 days after inoculation of the cells, a cranial MRI with contrast agent revealed tumor growth. After detection of tumor mass in MRI, FAM-TOC5,6-Carboxyfluoresceine-Tyr3-Octreotide was injected intravenously and tumor mass was hereafter resected under visualization via fluorescence microscope and endoscope. After attempted total resection, animal were sacrificed brain slices were obtained and histologically analysed to verify the resection extent.
In 18 mice tumor growth was detected in MRI after 90 days of inoculation. The tumor mass could be clearly identified with fluorescence microscope and endoscope after injecting FAM-TOC5,6-Carboxyfluoresceine-Tyr3-Octreotide. The tumor margins could be better visualized. After fluorescence-guided resection no remaining tumor could be identified in histological analysis.
This study describes for the first time the use of FAM-TOC5,6-Carboxyfluoresceine-Tyr3-Octreotide and demonstrates its value of fluorescent identification of meningioma cells in vivo. Furthermore, the authors established a new experimental animal model for fluorescence meningioma surgery.
Abstract Recent discoveries of transiting giant exoplanets around M-dwarf stars (GEMS), aided by the all-sky coverage of TESS, are starting to stretch theories of planet formation through the ...core-accretion scenario. Recent upper limits on their occurrence suggest that they decrease with lower stellar masses, with fewer GEMS around lower-mass stars compared to solar-type. In this paper, we discuss existing GEMS both through confirmed planets, as well as protoplanetary disk observations, and a combination of tests to reconcile these with theoretical predictions. We then introduce the Searching for GEMS survey, where we utilize multidimensional nonparameteric statistics to simulate hypothetical survey scenarios to predict the required sample size of transiting GEMS with mass measurements to robustly compare their bulk-density with canonical hot Jupiters orbiting FGK stars. Our Monte Carlo simulations predict that a robust comparison requires about 40 transiting GEMS (compared to the existing sample of ∼15) with 5 σ mass measurements. Furthermore, we discuss the limitations of existing occurrence estimates for GEMS and provide a brief description of our planned systematic search to improve the occurrence rate estimates for GEMS.
