The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K±→π±π0e+e− decay from an exposure of 1.7×1011 charged kaon decays recorded in 2003–2004. A sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% ...background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratio in the full kinematic region, BR(K±→π±π0e+e−)=(4.24±0.14)×10−6. The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Several P- and CP-violating asymmetries are also evaluated.
The use of GPUs to implement general purpose computational tasks, known as GPGPU since fifteen years ago, has reached maturity. Applications take advantage of the parallel architectures of these ...devices in many different domains. Over the last few years several works have demonstrated the effectiveness of the integration of GPU-based systems in the high level trigger of various HEP experiments. On the other hand, the use of GPUs in the DAQ and low level trigger systems, characterized by stringent real-time constraints, poses several challenges. In order to achieve such a goal we devised NaNet, a FPGA-based PCI-Express Network Interface Card design capable of direct (zero-copy) data transferring with CPU and GPU (GPUDirect) while online processing incoming and outgoing data streams. The board provides as well support for multiple link technologies (1/10/40GbE and custom ones). The validity of our approach has been tested in the context of the NA62 CERN experiment, harvesting the computing power of last generation NVIDIA Pascal GPUs and of the FPGA hosted by NaNet to build in real-time refined physics-related primitives for the RICH detector (i.e. the Cerenkov rings parameters) that enable the building of more stringent conditions for data selection in the low level trigger.

separation, time measurement and level 0 trigger. The ...experimental requirements for this detector are: a muon contamination in pion samples lower than 5×10

ps. A prototype of such a detector was built and tested in 2009; it consists of a full length (

) Ne filled vessel equipped with a spherical mirror and 414 PMs on its focal plane, located about 17
m upstream of the mirror. This prototype was tested at CERN SPS on a positive hadron beam, in the required momentum range, to measure the
π

μ
separation and to confirm the time resolution obtained with a previous prototype; the

misidentification probability is about 0.7% and the time resolution is better than 100

Two hundred nine first-ever stroke patients undergoing a post-acute inpatient rehabilitation.
Cognitive status was assessed with the cognitive FIM and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The response to the rehabilitation was defined as the achievement of the MCID between admission and discharge in the motor FIM (responder) and both in the motor and in the cognitive FIM (best-responder).
Subjects with a baseline higher MMSE>24.9 had a near four-fold higher probability of being responder (OR 3.91; 95% CI 1.72-8.89) and a two-fold higher probability of being best-responder (OR 2.69; 95% CI 1.24-5.84) on motor FIM as compared to those with a MMSE≤24.9. A duration of the rehabilitation of 55-61 days implies a three-fold higher probability (OR 3.17; 95% CI 1.15-8.72) to be responder as compared to shorter period of treatment; a treatment >61 days does not involve a greater probability of response.
This is the first study that examined post-stroke motor recovery mainly in terms of clinical relevance (MCID). Subjects with a higher cognitive level are more likely to achieve a clinically meaningful recovery.
MCID can be applied extensively to post-stroke patients undergoing to an inpatient rehabilitation in order to have a clinically useful instrument that assess the recovery.

General-purpose computing on GPUs is emerging as a new paradigm in several fields of science, although so far applications have been tailored to employ GPUs as accelerators in offline computations. ...With the steady decrease of GPU latencies and the increase in link and memory throughputs, time is ripe for real-time applications using GPUs in high-energy physics data acquisition and trigger systems. We will discuss the use of online parallel computing on GPUs for synchronous low level trigger systems, focusing on tests performed on the trigger of the CERN NA62 experiment. Latencies of all components need analysing, networking being the most critical. To keep it under control, we envisioned NaNet, an FPGA-based PCIe Network Interface Card (NIC) enabling GPUDirect connection. Moreover, we discuss how specific trigger algorithms can be parallelised and thus benefit from a GPU implementation, in terms of increased execution speed. Such improvements are particularly relevant for the foreseen LHC luminosity upgrade where highly selective algorithms will be crucial to maintain sustainable trigger rates with very high pileup.
The NA62 experiment collected a large sample of charged kaon decays in 2007 with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons. A measurement of the π0 electromagnetic transition form factor ...slope parameter from 1.11×106 fully reconstructed K±→π±πD0, πD0→e+e−γ events is reported. The measured value a=(3.68±0.57)×10−2 is in good agreement with theoretical expectations and previous measurements, and represents the most precise experimental determination of the slope in the time-like momentum transfer region.
