In ...this work, a facile top‐down strategy is developed for the preparation of SnSb‐in‐plane nanoconfined 3D N‐doped porous graphene networks for sodium ion battery anodes, which are composed of several tens of interconnected empty N‐graphene boxes in‐plane firmly embedded with ultrasmall SnSb nanocrystals. The all‐around encapsulation (plane‐to‐plane contact) architecture that provides a large interface between N‐graphene and SnSb nanocrystal not only effectively enhances the electron conductivity and structural integrity of the overall electrode, but also offers excess interfacial sodium storage, thus leading to much enhanced high‐rate sodium storage capacity and stability, which has been proven by both experimental results and first‐principles simulations. Moreover, this top‐down strategy can enable new paths to the low‐cost and high‐yield synthesis of 3D graphene/metal composites for applications in energy‐related fields and beyond.

Mo2C submicron layer coated diamond particles prepared by a molten salts route with Mo powder as the starting material were used as the filler in Cu- and Al- matrix composites. The microstructure and thermal property of the composites prepared by a vacuum pressure infiltration method were investigated. When introducing a 500nm thick Mo2C layer, the thermal conductivity of the composites with different matrix presented different performance. A high thermal conductivity (657Wm−1K−1) was obtained in diamond/Cu composites owing to the improved interfacial bonding and lower interfacial thermal resistance, while the thermal conductivity of diamond/Al composites decreased from 553Wm−1K−1 to 218Wm−1K−1 when introducing the Mo2C layer, which can be attributed to the formation of harmful granule-phase (Al12Mo) at the interface of diamond and aluminum. This work provides a promising approach to improve performance of diamond reinforced metal matrix composites by selecting carbide as an interface modifier.
Multiple lines of evidence have demonstrated that circular RNAs (circRNAs) play oncogenic or tumor-suppressive roles in various human cancers. Nevertheless, the biological functions of circRNAs in ...small cell lung cancer (SCLC) are still elusive.
CircVAPA (annotated as hsa_circ_0006990) was identified by mining the circRNA profiling dataset of six paired SCLC tissues and the RNA-seq data of serum samples from 36 SCLC patients and 118 healthy controls. The circVAPA expression level was evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR in SCLC cells and tissues. Cell viability, colony formation, cell cycle and apoptosis analysis assays and in vivo tumorigenesis were used to reveal the biological roles of circVAPA. The underlying mechanism of circVAPA was investigated by Western blot, RNA pulldown, RNA immunoprecipitation, dual-luciferase reporter assay and rescue experiments.
We revealed that circVAPA, derived from exons 2-4 of the vesicle-associated membrane protein-associated protein A (VAPA) gene, exhibited higher expression levels in SCLC cell lines, clinical tissues, and serum from SCLC patients than the controls, and facilitated SCLC progression in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, circVAPA activated the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathway by modulating the miR-377-3p and miR-494-3p/insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) axis to accelerate SCLC progression. Furthermore, circVAPA depletion markedly enhanced the inhibitory effects of BMS-536924, an IGF1R kinase inhibitor in cellular and xenograft mouse models.
CircVAPA promotes SCLC progression via the miR-377-3p and miR-494-3p/IGF1R/AKT axis. We hope to develop clinical protocols of combinations of circVAPA inhibition and BMS-536924 addition for treating SCLC with circVAPA upregulation.
Rotating machines such as diesel engines, cutting machines, fans, motors, etc., generate sinusoidal noise signals that may be effectively reduced by narrowband active noise control (ANC) systems. In ...this paper, a typical filtered-X LMS (FXLMS) based narrowband ANC system equipped with an online secondary-path modeling subsystem is analyzed in detail. First, difference equations governing the dynamics of the FXLMS algorithm for secondary source synthesis and the LMS algorithm for secondary-path estimation are derived in terms of convergence in both mean and mean square. Steady-state expressions for mean-square error (MSE) as well as the residual noise power are then developed in closed form. Extensive simulations are performed to demonstrate the validity of the analytical results.
Oesophageal cancer is one of the most aggressive cancers and is the sixth leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Approximately 70% of global oesophageal cancer cases occur in China, with ...oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) being the histopathological form in the vast majority of cases (>90%). Currently, there are limited clinical approaches for the early diagnosis and treatment of ESCC, resulting in a 10% five-year survival rate for patients. However, the full repertoire of genomic events leading to the pathogenesis of ESCC remains unclear. Here we describe a comprehensive genomic analysis of 158 ESCC cases, as part of the International Cancer Genome Consortium research project. We conducted whole-genome sequencing in 17 ESCC cases and whole-exome sequencing in 71 cases, of which 53 cases, plus an additional 70 ESCC cases not used in the whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing, were subjected to array comparative genomic hybridization analysis. We identified eight significantly mutated genes, of which six are well known tumour-associated genes (TP53, RB1, CDKN2A, PIK3CA, NOTCH1, NFE2L2), and two have not previously been described in ESCC (ADAM29 and FAM135B). Notably, FAM135B is identified as a novel cancer-implicated gene as assayed for its ability to promote malignancy of ESCC cells. Additionally, MIR548K, a microRNA encoded in the amplified 11q13.3-13.4 region, is characterized as a novel oncogene, and functional assays demonstrate that MIR548K enhances malignant phenotypes of ESCC cells. Moreover, we have found that several important histone regulator genes (MLL2 (also called KMT2D), ASH1L, MLL3 (KMT2C), SETD1B, CREBBP and EP300) are frequently altered in ESCC. Pathway assessment reveals that somatic aberrations are mainly involved in the Wnt, cell cycle and Notch pathways. Genomic analyses suggest that ESCC and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma share some common pathogenic mechanisms, and ESCC development is associated with alcohol drinking. This study has explored novel biological markers and tumorigenic pathways that would greatly improve therapeutic strategies for ESCC.

The inhibition of the PI3K signaling and HDAC activity by CUDC-907 was analyzed by western blotting. The effect of CUDC-907 on olaparib-induced DNA damage response was assessed by western blotting and Immunofluorescence staining. The cytotoxicity of CUDC-907 alone or in combination with olaparib in a panel of SCLC cell lines were evaluated by the CellTiter-Glo Luminescent Cell Viability Assay and flow cytometry. The in vivo effects of CUDC-907 and olaparib alone or in combination were examined using a patient-derived xenografts (PDX) model of SCLC.
CUDC-907 treatment downregulated MYC paralogs and FoxM1, induced G1 cell-cycle arrest, and impaired DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair capacity in SCLC cells, which produced a potent antiproliferative effect. Furthermore, we showed that CUDC-907 treatment enhanced the therapeutic efficacy of PARP inhibitor olaparib in SCLC cellular models and a PDX model. Mechanistic investigations demonstrated that CUDC-907 synergized with olaparib through the blockade of DSB repair pathways and downregulation of MYC paralogs and FoxM1.
Our study uncovers that dual PI3K and HDAC inhibition by CUDC-907 exerts significant single-agent activity and strong synergistic effects with PARP inhibitor olaparib in SCLC, which thus provides a rational combination treatment strategy for SCLC clinical investigation.
This report demonstrates a straightforward, robust, multiplexed and point-of-care microcapillary-based loop-mediated isothermal amplification (cLAMP) for assaying nucleic acids. This assay integrates ...capillaries (glass or plastic) to introduce and house sample/reagents, segments of water droplets to prevent contamination, pocket warmers to provide heat, and a hand-held flashlight for a visual readout of the fluorescent signal. The cLAMP system allows the simultaneous detection of two RNA targets of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiple plasma samples, and achieves a high sensitivity of two copies of standard plasmid. As few nucleic acid detection methods can be wholly independent of external power supply and equipment, our cLAMP holds great promise for point-of-care applications in resource-poor settings.
With the intense international response to the AIDS pandemic, HIV vaccines have been extensively investigated but have failed due to issues of safety or efficacy in humans. Adjuvants for HIV/AIDS ...vaccines are under intense research but a rational design approach is still lacking. Nanomaterials represent an obvious opportunity in this field due to their unique physicochemical properties. Gold nanostructures are being actively studied as a promising and versatile platform for biomedical application. Herein, we report novel surface-engineered gold nanorods (NRs) used as promising DNA vaccine adjuvant for HIV treatment. We have exploited the effects of surface chemistry on the adjuvant activity of the gold nanorod by placing three kinds of molecules, that is, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDDAC), and polyethyleneimine (PEI) on the surface of the nanorod. These PDDAC- or PEI-modified Au NRs can significantly promote cellular and humoral immunity as well as T cell proliferation through activating antigen-presenting cells if compared to naked HIV-1 Env plasmid DNA treatment in vivo. These findings have shed light on the rational design of low-toxic nanomaterials as a versatile platform for vaccine nanoadjuvants/delivery systems.
In this study, a robust feedforward hybrid active noise control (ANC) system with online secondary‐path modelling (SPM) is proposed that is capable of not only effectively suppressing the broadband ...and narrowband noise components but also tracking the secondary path (SP) variations. An finite impulse response online SPM subsystem as well as an efficient decoupling filter are included in the proposed feedforward hybrid ANC (HANC) system. The decoupling filter is a parallel‐form bandpass filter bank that consists of multiple bandpass filters that are derived from the second‐order infinite impulse response notch filters. It takes the residual noise as its input and separates the broadband component from the narrowband component, with the former used as not only a desired signal for the SPM but also as an error signal for updating the broadband sub‐controller, whereas the latter adapted simultaneously to scale the auxiliary white Gaussian noise and to update the narrowband sub‐controller. Extensive simulations are conducted with both the synthetic and real SPs as well as the synthetic and real noise signals that are generated by a large‐scale factory cutting machine (strand‐cutter) to demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed feedforward HANC system. Comparisons are also demonstrated with the original HANC system as well as its directly extended version with an online SPM subsystem.
A robust feedforward HANC with online SPM is proposed by wise use of an efficient decoupling filter that is based on a parallel‐form bandpass filter bank, which significantly reduces the coupling among the two sub‐controllers and the online SPM subsystem. The new system can not only effectively suppress the broadband and narrowband noise components but also track the secondary path variations simultaneously. The proposed system enjoys major advantages of improved SPM accuracy, faster system convergence as well as significantly improved noise reduction performance.
