The use of graphene in spintronic devices depends, among other things, on its ability to convert a spin excitation into an electric charge signal, a phenomenon that requires a spin-orbit coupling ...(SOC). Here we report the observation of two effects that show the existence of SOC in large-area CVD grown single-layer graphene deposited on a single crystal film of the ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG). The first is a magnetoresistance of graphene induced by the magnetic proximity effect with YIG. The second is the detection of a dc voltage along the graphene layer resulting from the conversion of the spin current generated by spin pumping from microwave driven ferromagnetic resonance into a charge current, which is attributed to the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect.
The Observations and Modeling of the Green Ocean Amazon (GoAmazon2014/5) Experiment was carried out in the environs of Manaus, Brazil, in the central region of the Amazon basin for 2 years from ...1 January 2014 through 31 December 2015. The experiment focused on the complex interactions among vegetation, atmospheric chemistry, and aerosol production on the one hand and their connections to aerosols, clouds, and precipitation on the other. The objective was to understand and quantify these linked processes, first under natural conditions to obtain a baseline and second when altered by the effects of human activities. To this end, the pollution plume from the Manaus metropolis, superimposed on the background conditions of the central Amazon basin, served as a natural laboratory. The present paper, as the introduction to the special issue of GoAmazon2014/5, presents the context and motivation of the GoAmazon2014/5 Experiment. The nine research sites, including the characteristics and instrumentation of each site, are presented. The sites range from time point zero (T0) upwind of the pollution, to T1 in the midst of the pollution, to T2 just downwind of the pollution, to T3 furthest downwind of the pollution (70 km). In addition to the ground sites, a low-altitude G-159 Gulfstream I (G-1) observed the atmospheric boundary layer and low clouds, and a high-altitude Gulfstream G550 (HALO) operated in the free troposphere. During the 2-year experiment, two Intensive Operating Periods (IOP1 and IOP2) also took place that included additional specialized research instrumentation at the ground sites as well as flights of the two aircraft. GoAmazon2014/5 IOP1 was carried out from 1 February to 31 March 2014 in the wet season. GoAmazon2014/5 IOP2 was conducted from 15 August to 15 October 2014 in the dry season. The G-1 aircraft flew during both IOP1 and IOP2, and the HALO aircraft flew during IOP2. In the context of the Amazon basin, the two IOPs also correspond to the clean and biomass burning seasons, respectively. The Manaus plume is present year-round, and it is transported by prevailing northeasterly and easterly winds in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. This introduction also organizes information relevant to many papers in the special issue. Information is provided on the vehicle fleet, power plants, and industrial activities of Manaus. The mesoscale and synoptic meteorologies relevant to the two IOPs are presented. Regional and long-range transport of emissions during the two IOPs is discussed based on satellite observations across South America and Africa. Fire locations throughout the airshed are detailed. In conjunction with the context and motivation of GoAmazon2014/5 as presented in this introduction, research articles including thematic overview articles are anticipated in this special issue to describe the detailed results and findings of the GoAmazon2014/5 Experiment.
This study introduces a first glance at Amazonian aerosols in the N–Dg–σ phase space. Aerosol data, measured from May 2021 to April 2022 at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), were fitted by a ...multi-modal lognormal function and separated into three modes: the sub-50 nm, the Aitken (50–100 nm), and the accumulation modes. The fit results were then evaluated in the N–Dg–σ phase space, which represents a three-dimensional space based on the three lognormal fit parameters. These parameters represent, for a given mode i, the number concentration (Ni), the median geometric diameter (Dg,i), and the geometric standard deviation (σi). Each state of a particle number size distribution (PNSD) is represented by a single dot in this space, while a collection of dots shows the delimitation of all PNSD states under given conditions. The connections in ensembles of data points show trajectories caused by pseudo-forces, such as precipitation regimes and vertical movement. We showed that all three modes have a preferential arrangement in this space, reflecting their intrinsic behaviors in the atmosphere. These arrangements were interpreted as volumetric figures, elucidating the boundaries of each mode. Time trajectories in seasonal and diurnal cycles revealed that fits with the sub-20 nm mode are associated with rainfall events that happen in the morning and in the afternoon. But in the morning they grow rapidly into the Aitken mode, and in the afternoon they remain below 50 nm. Also, certain modes demonstrated well-defined curves in the space, e.g., the seasonal trajectory of the accumulation mode follows an ellipsoid, while the diurnal cycle of the sub-50 nm mode in the dry season follows a linear trajectory. As an effect of the precipitation on the PNSDs and vice versa, N and Dg were found to increase for the sub-50 nm mode and to decrease for the Aitken and accumulation modes after the precipitation peak. Afternoons with precipitation were preceded by mornings with larger particles of the accumulation mode, whose Dg was ∼ 10 nm larger than in days without precipitation. Nevertheless, this large Dg in the morning seems to influence subsequent rainfall only in the dry season, while in the wet season both N and Dg seem to have the same weight of influence. The observed patterns of the PNSDs in the N–Dg–σ phase space showed to be a promising tool for the characterization of atmospheric aerosols, to contribute to our understanding of the main processes in aerosol–cloud interactions, and to open new perspectives on aerosol parameterizations and model validation.

) supported by hydrodynamical simulations. This cluster is composed of two main ...structures called A1758N and A1758S. The northern structure is composed of A1758NW and A1758NE, with lensing determined masses of
$7.90_{-1.55}^{+1.89}$
× 1014 M⊙ and
$5.49_{-1.33}^{+1.67}$
× 1014 M⊙, respectively. They show a remarkable feature: while in A1758NW, there is a spatial agreement among weak-lensing mass distribution, intracluster medium and its brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), in A1758NE, the X-ray peak is located
$96_{-15}^{+14}$
arcsec away from the mass peak and BCG positions. Given the detachment between gas and mass, we could use the local surface mass density to estimate an upper limit for the dark matter self-interaction cross-section: σ/m < 5.83 cm2 g−1. Combining our velocity data with hydrodynamical simulations, we have shown that A1758 NW and NE had their closest approach 0.27 Gyr ago and their merger axis is 21° ± 12° from the plane of the sky. In the A1758S system, we have measured a total mass of
$4.96_{-1.19}^{+1.08} \times 10^{14}$
M⊙ and, using radial velocity data, we found that the main merger axis is located at 70° ± 4° from the plane of the sky, therefore closest to the line of sight.
In this randomized clinical trial, the clinical and mycological efficacy of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) was compared with that of topical antifungal therapy for the treatment of denture stomatitis ...(DS) and the prevalence of Candida species was identified. Patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups (n = 20 each); in the nystatin (NYT) group patients received topical treatment with nystatin (100 000 IU) four times daily for 15 days and in the PDT group the denture and palate of patients were sprayed with 500 mg/L of Photogem®, and after 30 min of incubation, were illuminated by light emitting-diode light at 455 nm (37.5 and 122 J/cm2, respectively) three times a week for 15 days. Mycological cultures taken from dentures and palates and standard photographs of the palates were taken at baseline (day 0), at the end of the treatment (day 15) and at the follow-up time intervals (days 30, 60 and 90). Colonies were quantified (CFU/mL) and identified by biochemical tests. Data were analysed by Fisher's exact test, analysis of variance and Tukey tests and κ test (α = 0.05). Both treatments significantly reduced the CFU/mL at the end of the treatments and on day 30 of the follow-up period (p <0.05). The NYT and PDT groups showed clinical success rates of 53% and 45%, respectively. Candida albicans was the most prevalent species identified. PDT was as effective as topical nystatin in the treatment of DS.
We report direct-detection constraints on light dark matter particles interacting with electrons. The results are based on a method that exploits the extremely low levels of leakage current of the ...DAMIC detector at SNOLAB of 2–6×10−22 A cm−2. We evaluate the charge distribution of pixels that collect <10e− for contributions beyond the leakage current that may be attributed to dark matter interactions. Constraints are placed on so-far unexplored parameter space for dark matter masses between 0.6 and 100 MeV c−2. We also present new constraints on hidden-photon dark matter with masses in the range 1.2–30 eV c−2.
Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) often coexists in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The present prospective cohort study tested the effect of OSAS treatment with ...continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on the survival of hypoxaemic COPD patients. It was hypothesised that CPAP treatment would be associated with higher survival in patients with moderate-to-severe OSAS and hypoxaemic COPD receiving long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT). Prospective study participants attended two outpatient advanced lung disease LTOT clinics in São Paulo, Brazil, between January 1996 and July 2006. Of 603 hypoxaemic COPD patients receiving LTOT, 95 were diagnosed with moderate-to-severe OSAS. Of this OSAS group, 61 (64%) patients accepted and were adherent to CPAP treatment, and 34 did not accept or were not adherent and were considered not treated. The 5-yr survival estimate was 71% (95% confidence interval 53-83%) and 26% (12-43%) in the CPAP-treated and nontreated groups, respectively (p<0.01). After adjusting for several confounders, patients treated with CPAP showed a significantly lower risk of death (hazard ratio of death versus nontreated 0.19 (0.08-0.48)). The present study found that CPAP treatment was associated with higher survival in patients with moderate-to-severe OSAS and hypoxaemic COPD receiving LTOT.
Understanding the influence of biomass burning aerosol on clouds and precipitation in the Amazon is key to reducing uncertainties in simulations of climate change scenarios with regard to ...deforestation fires. Here, we associate rainfall characteristics obtained from an S-band radar in the Amazon with in situ measurements of biomass burning aerosol for the entire year of 2009. The most important results were obtained during the dry season (July-December). The results indicate that the influence of aerosol on precipitating systems is modulated by the atmospheric degree of instability. For less unstable atmospheres, the higher the aerosol concentration is, the lower the precipitation is over the region. In contrast, for more unstable cases, higher concentrations of black carbon are associated with greater precipitation, increased ice content, and larger rain cells; this finding suggests an association with long-lived systems. The results presented are statistically significant. However, due to limitations imposed by the available data set, important features, such as the contribution of each mechanism to the rainfall suppression, need further investigation. Regional climate model simulations with aircraft and radar measurements would help clarify these questions.
Aim: This study firstly evaluated the activity of a silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) solution against Candida albicans and then the effect of incorporation of AgNPs into a denture base acrylic resin on ...the material’s hydrophobicity, C. albicans adhesion and biofilm formation. Methods and Results: The AgNPs solution was synthesized by chemical reduction and characterized. Minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum fungicidal (MFC) concentrations for planktonic cells and sessile cells (MFCs) of the AgNPs solution against C. albicans were determined. Specimens (n = 360) of silver‐incorporated acrylic resin at concentrations of 1000, 750, 500, 250 and 30 ppm were also prepared and stored in PBS for 0, 7, 90 and 180 days. Control was acrylic resin without AgNPs (0 ppm). After the storage periods, contact angles were measured and the specimens were used for C. albicans adherence (37°C; 90 min; n = 9) and biofilm formation (37°C; 48 h; n = 9) by XTT reduction assay. MIC, MFC and MFCs values were 3·98, 15·63 and 1000 ppm, respectively. Incorporation of AgNPs reduced the hydrophobicity of the resin. No effect on adherence and biofilm formation was observed. At 90 and 180 days of storage, there was significant increase in adherence and biofilm formation. Conclusions: Although the AgNPs solution had antifungal activity, no effect on C. albicans adherence and biofilm formation was observed after its incorporation into a denture base resin. Significance and Impact of the Study: The synthesized AgNPs solution is a promising antifungal agent, warranting investigations of more efficient methods of incorporation into denture base resins.
Intravascular hemolysis and hemoglobinuria are associated with sickle cell nephropathy. ApoL1 is involved in cell-free hemoglobin scavenging through association with haptoglobin-related protein. ...APOL1 G1/G2 variants are the strongest genetic predictors of kidney disease in the general African-American population. A single report associated APOL1 G1/G2 with sickle cell nephropathy. In 221 patients with sickle cell disease at the University of Illinois at Chicago, we replicated the finding of an association of APOL1 G1/G2 with proteinuria, specifically with urine albumin concentration (β=1.1, P=0.003), observed an even stronger association with hemoglobinuria (OR=2.5, P=4.3×10(-6)), and also replicated the finding of an association with hemoglobinuria in 487 patients from the Walk-Treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension and Sickle cell Disease with Sildenafil Therapy study (OR=2.6, P=0.003). In 25 University of Illinois sickle cell disease patients, concentrations of urine kidney injury molecule-1 correlated with urine cell-free hemoglobin concentrations (r=0.59, P=0.002). Exposing human proximal tubular cells to increasing cell-free hemoglobin led to increasing concentrations of supernatant kidney injury molecule-1 (P=0.01), reduced viability (P=0.01) and induction of HMOX1 and SOD2. HMOX1 rs743811 associated with chronic kidney disease stage (OR=3.0, P=0.0001) in the University of Illinois cohort and end-stage renal disease (OR=10.0, P=0.0003) in the Walk-Treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension and Sickle cell Disease with Sildenafil Therapy cohort. Longer HMOX1 GT-tandem repeats (>25) were associated with lower estimated glomerular filtration rate in the University of Illinois cohort (P=0.01). Our findings point to an association of APOL1 G1/G2 with kidney disease in sickle cell disease, possibly through increased risk of hemoglobinuria, and associations of HMOX1 variants with kidney disease, possibly through reduced protection of the kidney from hemoglobin-mediated toxicity.
