We have developed a novel light tracker based on plastic scintillating fiber arrays readout with Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). The tracker consists of multiple planes, with the fibers in each ...plane oriented perpendicularly to those in the adjacent plane, in order to allow 3D track reconstruction. The fibers in each plane have round cross sections, with a diameter of 500μm, and are arranged in two staggered layers in a close-packed configuration. The fibers are readout by means of SiPM arrays with a 250μm strip pitch placed at one of their ends. Scintillating fibers allow a reduced material budget while providing a good spatial resolution and a fast response. This design is therefore suitable to track low-energy particles, such as the lowest energy cosmic rays or the electrons produced in Compton scatterings of gamma rays with energies down to 100 keV. We have built a detector prototype, equipped with Hamamatsu 128-channel SiPM arrays, readout with 32-channel PETIROC2A front-end ASICs. These ASICs are controlled by a custom data acquisition system board equipped with Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA with self-triggering capabilities. The prototype has been tested with particle beams, cosmic rays and radioactive sources. The tracker design will be presented and performance of the prototype will be discussed.

We present the concept of a novel compact and light tracker based on arrays of plastic scintillating fibers readout with Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). The tracker will be composed of multiple ...planes, with the fibers in each plane oriented perpendicularly to those in the adjacent planes. Each plane will consist of two staggered layers of fibers, having a round cross section with 500 μm diameter and arranged in a close packed configuration. Scintillation photons produced in the fibers will be collected by SiPM arrays with 250 μm strip pitch located at one end of the fibers. This configuration will ensure an accurate spatial resolution and a fast response, while keeping a reduced material budget. Hence, this detector will be suitable to track low energy particles and will be able to efficiently detect the Compton scattered electrons produced by gamma rays with energies down to 100 keV. We built a reduced scale tracker prototype, using Hamamatsu 128 channel SiPM arrays and 32 channel PETIROC2A front end ASICs readout. The latter are controlled by a custom data acquisition board with self triggering capabilities. We tested this prototype with cosmic rays, radioactive sources and accelerated particle beams.

We present a detailed follow-up of the very energetic GRB 210905A at a high redshift of z = 6.312 and its luminous X-ray and optical afterglow. Following the detection by Swift and Konus- Wind , we ...obtained a photometric and spectroscopic follow-up in the optical and near-infrared (NIR), covering both the prompt and afterglow emission from a few minutes up to 20 Ms after burst. With an isotropic gamma-ray energy release of E iso = 1.27 −0.19 +0.20 × 10 54 erg, GRB 210905A lies in the top ∼7% of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the Konus- Wind catalogue in terms of energy released. Its afterglow is among the most luminous ever observed, and, in particular, it is one of the most luminous in the optical at t ≳ 0.5 d in the rest frame. The afterglow starts with a shallow evolution that can be explained by energy injection, and it is followed by a steeper decay, while the spectral energy distribution is in agreement with slow cooling in a constant-density environment within the standard fireball theory. A jet break at ∼46.2 ± 16.3 d (6.3 ± 2.2 d rest-frame) has been observed in the X-ray light curve; however, it is hidden in the H band due to a constant contribution from the host galaxy and potentially from a foreground intervening galaxy. In particular, the host galaxy is only the fourth GRB host at z > 6 known to date. By assuming a number density n = 1 cm −3 and an efficiency η = 0.2, we derived a half-opening angle of 8.4 ° ±1.0°, which is the highest ever measured for a z ≳ 6 burst, but within the range covered by closer events. The resulting collimation-corrected gamma-ray energy release of ≃1 × 10 52 erg is also among the highest ever measured. The moderately large half-opening angle argues against recent claims of an inverse dependence of the half-opening angle on the redshift. The total jet energy is likely too large to be sustained by a standard magnetar, and it suggests that the central engine of this burst was a newly formed black hole. Despite the outstanding energetics and luminosity of both GRB 210905A and its afterglow, we demonstrate that they are consistent within 2σ with those of less distant bursts, indicating that the powering mechanisms and progenitors do not evolve significantly with redshift.
In this study we investigated the property of a new medical substance, in the form of a gel compound containing four aminoacids (glycine, leucine, proline, lysine) and sodium hyaluronate (AMINOGAM), ...to accelerate the wound healing process of the soft oral tissues and to promote angiogenesis in vivo in the vascular proliferation in chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. Furthermore, we investigated the capacity of AMINOGAM to induce the expression of an angiogenic cytokine, namely vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in human fibroblasts in vitro. Results showed that AMINOGAM promoted wound healing in post-surgical wounds (after teeth extraction, oral laser surgery with secondary healing without direct suture of the surgical wound, and after dental implant insertion). Stimulated angiogenesis in vivo in the CAM assay and the response was similar to that obtained with vascular endothelial growth factor, a well-known angiogenic cytokine, tested in the same assay, and confirmed by clinical outcomes, which showed reduction of the healing time of oral soft tissues after three different kinds of surgery and also the absence of post-operative infections.
About 70 percent of Air Force hazardous waste comes from AFLC's major installations. In 1985, when the RCRA-mandated waste minimization program took effect, more than 20,000 tons a year of hazardous ...waste were generated, primarily at five AFLC air logistics centers (ALCs). Depot aircraft and component maintenance operations are the primary waste-generating activities at ALCs. In fiscal year 1989, AFLC maintenance repaired, overhauled, and inspected more than 1,000 aircraft, 7,100 engines and modules, and almost 1.2 million exchangeable items, involving painting, paint stripping, chemical cleaning, and electroplating.
•Replication is used to fabricate open-cell aluminum foams with bimodal cell size.•Coarse (C – 7 mm) and fine (F – 1 mm) cells are combined in different proportions.•The foam containing 67%C-33%F ...(C67F33) has a remarkable total porosity of 76%.•C67F33 exhibits the highest heat transfer coefficient and the lowest pressure drop.•C67F33 shows excellent thermal efficiency and great potential in thermal management.
Recent advances in cellular materials for active thermal management applications involve the integral design of their porous structure. In this work, open-cell aluminum foams with porosities in the range of 0.60–0.76 are developed, containing pores with spherical geometry and a bimodal pore size distribution. The fabrication strategy involves the use of the replication method by infiltration with liquid aluminum of porous preforms formed by packing NaCl spheres of two largely different sizes (7 mm and 1 mm average diameter), which are then removed by water dissolution. The paper describes cellular materials with different proportions of coarse and fine pores. Their detailed characterization by pore volume fraction, pressure drop, permeability, thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient is supported by analytical schemes. In addition, these materials were characterized under realistic operating conditions using computational fluid dynamics simulations. The material with 67 percent coarse pores and 33 percent fine pores, which has the highest porosity (and thus permeability), has the most appealing heat dissipation properties with the lowest pressure drops, making it an excellent candidate for emerging thermal management applications in electronic systems.

Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) delivered in ovo improve intestinal health of broiler chickens. This study aimed to demonstrate the impact of in ovo stimulation with GOS prebiotic on day 12 of egg ...incubation on performance and welfare traits in broiler chickens. The incubating eggs were divided into 3 groups, based on the substance injected in ovo: 3.5 mg of GOS dissolved in 0.2 mL physiological saline (GOS), 0.2 mL physiological saline (S), or uninjected controls (C). Constant heat stress (HS) was induced on days 32 to 42 post-hatch by increasing environmental temperature to 30°C. Thermoneutral (TN) animals were kept at 25°C. The performance (body weight BW, daily feed intake DFI, daily weight gain DWG, and feed conversion rate FCR) were measured and mortality was scored for starter (days 0 to 13), grower (days 14 to 27), and finisher (days 28 to 42) feeding phases. Rectal temperature was scored on days 32 to 42. Food-pad dermatitis (FPD) was scored post-mortem (day 42). GOS increased (P < 0.01) BW on day 42 (2.892 kg in GOS vs. 2.758 kg in C). Heat stress significantly reduced (P < 0.01) final BW (2.516 kg in TN vs. 3.110 kg in HS). During finisher phase, DFI was significantly higher in GOS vs. C (173.2 g vs. 165.7 g; P < 0.05). FCR calculated for the entire rearing period (days 0 to 42) ranged from 1.701 in C to 1.653 in GOS (P < 0.05). GOS improved FCR in HS animals during finisher phase (P < 0.05). Rectal temperature of GOS chickens under HS reached 42.5°C 1 day earlier than C and S (P < 0.05), which suggests that those birds recovered earlier from the high environmental temperature. Heat stress increased (P < 0.05) mortality about 5 times compared to TN during finisher phase (from 1.59% in TN to 7.69% in HS). GOS decreased FPD in TN conditions by 20% (no lesions in 81% in GOS vs. 60% in C). GOS delivered in ovo mitigated negative effects of HS on performance and welfare in broiler chickens.
We have analysed the NRAO Very Large Array Sky Survey and Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey data at 1.4 GHz and 843 MHz for a well-defined complete sample of hard X-ray AGN observed by INTEGRAL. ...A large number (70/79) of sources are detected in the radio band, showing a wide range of radio morphologies, from unresolved or slightly resolved cores to extended emission over several hundreds of kpc scales. The radio fluxes have been correlated with the 2–10 keV and 20–100 keV emission, revealing significant correlations with slopes consistent with those expected for radiatively efficient accreting systems. The high-energy emission coming from the inner accretion regions correlates with the radio emission averaged over hundreds of kpc scales (i.e. thousands of years).
