First-harmonic Fourier analysis of a gated blood-pool study is based on the assumption that the cardiac chambers contract once per cardiac cycle. In atrial arrhythmias this condition may not exist ...for the atria. We recently studied a patient with atrial flutter and 2:1 atrioventricular conduction. There were predictable alterations in the first-harmonic Fourier phase and amplitude images. The observed changes from first-harmonic Fourier analysis were: (a) very low atrial amplitude values, and (b) absence of identifiable atrial regions on the phase image.
We have studied the effects of excitonic complexes formation, such as excitons and trions, on the optical and on transport properties of GaAs–GaAlAs n–i–n double barrier diodes, by measuring the ...current–voltage characteristics and the photoluminescence emission, as function of bias. The observation of a pre-resonance shoulder in the I(V) curves, under high laser intensities, and a negative charged excitons in the photoluminescence spectra, under the same bias conditions, were associated to the dissociation of these complexes either by thermal excitation or by scattering with ‘free’ carriers in the quantum well layer. A simple rate equation model allows us to explain the kinetics of the excitonic complexes in double barrier devices.
We describe the first data release from the Spitzer-IRAC Equatorial Survey (SpIES); a large-area survey of 115 deg^2 in the Equatorial SDSS Stripe 82 field using Spitzer during its 'warm' mission ...phase. SpIES was designed to probe sufficient volume to perform measurements of quasar clustering and the luminosity function at z > 3 to test various models for "feedback" from active galactic nuclei (AGN). Additionally, the wide range of available multi-wavelength, multi-epoch ancillary data enables SpIES to identify both high-redshift (z > 5) quasars as well as obscured quasars missed by optical surveys. SpIES achieves 5{\sigma} depths of 6.13 {\mu}Jy (21.93 AB magnitude) and 5.75 {\mu}Jy (22.0 AB magnitude) at 3.6 and 4.5 microns, respectively - depths significantly fainter than WISE. We show that the SpIES survey recovers a much larger fraction of spectroscopically-confirmed quasars (98%) in Stripe 82 than are recovered by WISE (55%). This depth is especially powerful at high-redshift (z > 3.5), where SpIES recovers 94% of confirmed quasars, whereas WISE only recovers 25%. Here we define the SpIES survey parameters and describe the image processing, source extraction, and catalog production methods used to analyze the SpIES data. In addition to this survey paper, we release 234 images created by the SpIES team and three detection catalogs: a 3.6 {\mu}m-only detection catalog containing 6.1 million sources, a 4.5 {\mu}m-only detection catalog containing 6.5 million sources, and a dual-band detection catalog containing 5.4 million sources.
A prospective study was performed to determine the frequency with which defects on stress thallium images undergo rapid resolution. Analysis of paired views showed that 15% of the defects present in ...anterior views resolve in less than 30 minutes. This study documents the loss of sensitivity that can occur if imaging does not begin promptly after injection.
The epidemiology of inguinal hernia was investigated in a community survey in a neighbourhood of western Jerusalem in 1969-71. The current prevalence rate, excluding operated hernias, was 18 per 100 ...men aged 25 and over, and the lifetime prevalence, including operated hernias, was 24 per 100. Prevalence rose markedly with age; the lifetime prevalence rate reached 40 per 100 men at the ages of 65-74 and 47 per 100 at 75 and over. The prevalence of hernia was significantly higher in the presence of varicose veins, in men who reported symptoms of prostatic hypertrophy, and, among lean men only, in the presence of haemorrhoids. These associations may reflect the role of increased abdominal pressure. The prevalence of hernia was low in the presence of overweight or adiposity, suggesting that obesity is a protective factor. No significant age-independent associations were found with chronic cough, constipation, physical activity at work, or a number of other variables. Two-thirds of the hernias had not been operated upon. The prevalence of unrepaired hernias rose with age; 13% of all men aged 65-74 and 23% of those aged 75 and over had unoperated groin swellings. One in every five operated hernias showed evidence of recurrence. No significant age-independent associations were found between evidence of occurrence and other characteristics. A comparison of interview responses and examination findings showed that interview data on the presence of hernias were of low validity, mainly because of under-reporting.
We release the next installment of the Stripe 82 X-ray survey point-source
catalog, which currently covers 31.3 deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS) Stripe 82 Legacy field. In total, 6181 ...unique X-ray sources are
significantly detected with {\it XMM-Newton} ($>5\sigma$) and {\it Chandra}
($>4.5\sigma$). This catalog release includes data from {\it XMM-Newton} cycle
AO 13, which approximately doubled the Stripe 82X survey area. The flux limits
of the Stripe 82X survey are $8.7\times10^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$,
$4.7\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, and $2.1\times10^{-15}$ erg
s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the soft (0.5-2 keV), hard (2-10 keV), and full bands
(0.5-10 keV), respectively, with approximate half-area survey flux limits of
$5.4\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, $2.9\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$
cm$^{-2}$, and $1.7\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. We matched the X-ray
source lists to available multi-wavelength catalogs, including updated matches
to the previous release of the Stripe 82X survey; 88\% of the sample is matched
to a multi-wavelength counterpart. Due to the wide area of Stripe 82X and rich
ancillary multi-wavelength data, including coadded SDSS photometry,
mid-infrared {\it WISE} coverage, near-infrared coverage from UKIDSS and VHS,
ultraviolet coverage from {\it GALEX}, radio coverage from FIRST, and
far-infrared coverage from {\it Herschel}, as well as existing $\sim$30\%
optical spectroscopic completeness, we are beginning to uncover rare objects,
such as obscured high-luminosity AGN at high-redshift. The Stripe 82X point
source catalog is a valuable dataset for constraining how this population grows
and evolves, as well as for studying how they interact with the galaxies in
which they live.
We have evaluated a five-compartment model of 18Ffluoride kinetics in rats. The initial fluoride distribution was found to be similar to that of 77Brbromide, a known extracellular-fluid (ECF) tracer, ...in agreement with the hypothesis underlying the model, and the measured uptake rate in rat bones compared well with the digital computer solution. Simpler models did not give a better fit. In dead rats, fluoride movement was found within the skeleton, presumably from bone ECF to bone substance, although not as rapidly as predicted or found in the live animal. Evaluation of the rate constants permitted estimates to be made of cardiac output, skeletal blood flow, and bone ECF volume, all in accord with independent measurements. It is suggested that skeletal blood flow at rest is a constant fraction of body weight, and probably subserves a hematopoietic as well as a mineralization function.
