During a 2-year period in 2005–2007, we conducted surveillance of group A rotaviruses and other enteric agents among patients hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in 8 different cities of the ...Russian Federation. Fecal specimens were gathered from 3208 children (including 2848 children aged <5 years) and 1354 adults who were admitted to hospitals in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Chelyabinsk, Nizhnii Novgorod, Tyumen, Khabarovsk, Makhachkala, and Yakutsk. Polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect rotaviruses of groups A and C, noroviruses of genogroups I and II, astrovirus, sapovirus, and enteric adenoviruses (group F). Group A rotavirus was the most common viral pathogen detected among children aged <5 years (43.6%), followed by norovirus (12.5%), whereas norovirus was the pathogen most commonly detected in adults (11.9%). P and G genotypes were determined for 515 rotavirus specimens, and the most prevalent genotypes were G1P8 (44.9%), G4P8 (40.0%), G2P4 (8.5%), and G3P8 (6.6%). This study is the first multicenter study of rotaviruses in the Russian Federation and documents the important burden of disease caused by this pathogen, which soon may be preventable by vaccination
We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Xi(+)(cc) in the charged decay mode Xi(+)(cc)-->Lambda(+)(c)K-pi(+) in data from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. We observe ...an excess of 15.9 events over an expected background of 6.1+/-0.5 events, a statistical significance of 6.3sigma. The observed mass of this state is 3519+/-1 MeV/c(2). The Gaussian mass width of this state is 3 MeV/c(2), consistent with resolution; its lifetime is less than 33 fs at 90% confidence.
The symptomatic form of Blastocystis spp. infection not only with mild diarrhea or dysentery-like syndrome, but also with the development of severe ulcerative necrotic lesions of the intestine. ...Meanwhile, the pathogenicity of these microorganisms should not be exaggerated, due to majority asymptomatic cases or infection transmission with minor impaired bowel function.
Abstract
This paper presents a study of Zn diffusion process into InP and InGaAs/InP epitaxial heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy. It was found that both diffusion systems: a ...resistively heated quartz reactor with a solid-state Zn vapor source placed inside and hydrogen or nitrogen as the carrier gas and MOCVD reactor with hydrogen as the carrier gas allow achieving similar dopant concentration above 2*10e18 cm
-3
. The depth of the diffusion front in the InP layer is located from 2 to 3.5 μm depending on the temperature and time of the diffusion process. The diffusion of Zn into InP through the intermediate InGaAs layer provides better surface quality comparing with direct zinc diffusion into InP surface.
Bulbar paralysis has long been attracting the attention of neuropathologists, due to its diversity in the clinical picture, the duration of the course of the disease and the severity of the disease. ...In Germany, the term bulbar paralysis was first used in 1864 by Wachsmuth in relation to the chronic form, which is now called Duschenns progressive bulbar paralysis. Due to the difficulties of recognition, cases of intravital diagnosis of paralysis with lesions of the medulla oblongata were almost absent at that time. In France, the acquaintance with this disease began, apparently, a little earlier than Germany, but there and here they soon began to distinguish acute cases (Lange) of paralysis from chronic ones.
Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with an aperture limited by an oxide and a resonance cavity based on GaAlAs with high Al content provide a maximum γ factor (λ/2 design) and ...suppression of optical power beyond the aperture. A VCSEL with two coupled cavities provides additional sharp growth of the loss of high-order lateral modes by leakage to the oxidized region and provides single-mode laser generation for an aperture diameter of up to 5 μm. Single-mode antiwaveguiding VCSELs provide ultrafast data transmission with a rate of up to 160 Gbit/s. The structure in which the active medium is placed in the lower distributed Bragg reflector and the cavity and the upper distributed Bragg reflector are dielectric, reducing the temperature shift of the radiation wavelength by a factor of 2 (to ∼0.03 nm/K).
To retrospectively analyze the medical records of patients who have died from complications of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) caused by adenovirus serotype 7.
CAP was diagnosed in patients (6 men ...aged 19-24 years and 1 woman aged 49 years) on the basis of clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings. Adenoviral pneumonia was established by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Adenovirus DNA was detected in the patients' autopsy samples (lungs, brain, spleen, liver, blood). The adenoviruses were referred to as B1 serotype 7 on the basis of hexone gene sequencing results. Other potential causative agents of pneumonia were excluded by a battery of molecular genetic tests for a wide range of viral and bacterial pathogens of acute respiratory tract infections.
In all cases, the disease began acutely with fever (37.8 to 39 °C), weakness, headache, a sore throat, a dry, unproductive cough or runny nose. Clinical deterioration during symptomatic therapy led to hospital admission for CAP on disease days 2-11. The patients continued to feel worse during massive antibiotic therapy, by switching a drug one to six times and by simultaneously using 2-4 antibiotics and intensive therapy. Death occurred on disease days 10-24. Postmortem examination of all the patients revealed acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organ failure.
Adenovirus pneumonia causes diagnostic and therapeutic problems for clinicians. The clinical introduction of PCR methods for the diagnosis of viral infections allow the clinicians to elaborate and timely use effective management tactics in patients with adenoviral pneumonia and to prevent their death. It is necessary to design etiotropic therapy agents and to introduce the specific prevention of adenovirus infection in risk groups.
In 2018, a previously unknown Ebola virus, Bombali virus, was discovered in Sierra Leone. We describe detection of Bombali virus in Guinea. We found viral RNA in internal organs of 3 Angolan ...free-tailed bats (Mops condylurus) trapped in the city of N'Zerekore and in a nearby village.
