Purpose
This paper aims to examine the link between the Big Five personality traits and self-efficacy for teamwork, positioning manifest needs as intervening variables. The primary purpose of the ...analyses is to further develop some of the key variables contributing to team performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Relationships were tested with conditional process analysis. The sample includes 315 students from a large university. Likert measures were used to operationalize survey items, which are based on existing scales in the literature.
Findings
Each of the Big Five dimensions are related to teamwork self-efficacy (TSE), with manifest needs having significant mediating effects. For example, conscientiousness displayed a positive relationship to TSE, with both the need for affiliation and the need for power acting as significant intervening variables. Such relationships for each personality dimension are discussed fully in the paper.
Practical implications
High functioning teams need members who share a level of self-efficacy for engaging in teamwork. Leaders who must form their teams may find it useful to consider TSE, and the individual attributes that contribute to this important construct. The authors’ examination of the roles of both personality and manifest needs should offer some essential tools for this objective.
Originality/value
This paper contributes to our understanding of the relationship between personality and TSE by investigating manifest needs as process variables.
Drawing from a social predicament and identity management framework, we argue that procedural unfairness on the part of decision makers places messengers in a dilemma where they attempt to protect ...their professional image or legitimacy by engaging in refusals (e.g., curbing explanations) and exhibiting distancing behaviors (e.g., minimizing contact with victims) when delivering bad news. Such behaviors however, violate key tenets of fair interpersonal treatment. The results of two experiments supported our hypotheses in samples of experienced managers. Specifically, we found that levels of messengers' distancing and refusals were greater when the procedures used by decision makers were unfair rather than fair. Additionally, messengers' perceptions of a predicament (honesty versus disclosure) mediated these relationships. Implications and future research directions regarding the ethical delivery of bad news in the workplace are discussed.
The detection of fetal structural abnormalities is a routine part of antenatal care. Ultrasound examination policies vary among European countries. An additional ultrasound for fetal structural ...anomalies in the 3 rd trimester seems important for many reasons. Some abnormalities develop or first become apparent later in pregnancy. The aim of the study was to analyze the rate of previously undetected structural abnormalities in the 3 rd trimester.
8074 fetuses were examined in this prospective study between 1998 and 2008. All received an examination at 11 - 14 weeks and 79 % (6378 / 8074) of these fetuses also received an ultrasound at 20 - 24 weeks. If both of the examinations did not detect structural abnormalities, the fetuses were included in the study group and received an ultrasound at 28 - 32 weeks (n = 5044). New structural abnormalities in the 3 rd trimester were analyzed. The outcome was available in 96 % of the cases.
The overall incidence of fetal malformations was 3.6 % (n = 289), of which 40 % (116 / 289) were diagnosed at 11 - 14 weeks. The following 2nd trimester scan revealed 102 (35 %) new fetal malformations. An additional 44 (15 %) structural abnormalities were found in the 3 rd trimester. These were mainly abnormalities of the urogenital system (n = 18). There were also anomalies of the cardiovascular system (n = 9), the gastrointestinal system (n = 6) and the central nervous system (n = 4). One of the cases had a previously undiagnosed abnormal karyotype.
The ultrasound examination in the 3 rd trimester is of additional benefit and can detect previously unknown structural abnormalities. These findings are relevant for perinatal management and postnatal follow-up.
