Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products for the astronomical community to exploit, including astrophysical parameters for a half billion stars. In this work we demonstrate ...the high quality of these data products and illustrate their use in different astrophysical contexts. We query the astrophysical parameter tables along with other tables in Gaia DR3 to derive the samples of the stars of interest. We validate our results by using the Gaia catalogue itself and by comparison with external data. We have produced six homogeneous samples of stars with high quality astrophysical parameters across the HR diagram for the community to exploit. We first focus on three samples that span a large parameter space: young massive disk stars (~3M), FGKM spectral type stars (~3M), and UCDs (~20K). We provide these sources along with additional information (either a flag or complementary parameters) as tables that are made available in the Gaia archive. We furthermore identify 15740 bone fide carbon stars, 5863 solar-analogues, and provide the first homogeneous set of stellar parameters of the Spectro Photometric Standard Stars. We use a subset of the OBA sample to illustrate its usefulness to analyse the Milky Way rotation curve. We then use the properties of the FGKM stars to analyse known exoplanet systems. We also analyse the ages of some unseen UCD-companions to the FGKM stars. We additionally predict the colours of the Sun in various passbands (Gaia, 2MASS, WISE) using the solar-analogue sample.
This review discusses the complementary relationship between radio and hard X-ray observations of the Sun using primarily results from the era of the
Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic ...Imager
satellite. A primary focus of joint radio and hard X-ray studies of solar flares uses observations of nonthermal gyrosynchrotron emission at radio wavelengths and bremsstrahlung hard X-rays to study the properties of electrons accelerated in the main flare site, since it is well established that these two emissions show very similar temporal behavior. A quantitative prescription is given for comparing the electron energy distributions derived separately from the two wavelength ranges: this is an important application with the potential for measuring the magnetic field strength in the flaring region, and reveals significant differences between the electrons in different energy ranges. Examples of the use of simultaneous data from the two wavelength ranges to derive physical conditions are then discussed, including the case of microflares, and the comparison of images at radio and hard X-ray wavelengths is presented. There have been puzzling results obtained from observations of solar flares at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, and the comparison of these results with corresponding hard X-ray data is presented. Finally, the review discusses the association of hard X-ray releases with radio emission at decimeter and meter wavelengths, which is dominated by plasma emission (at lower frequencies) and electron cyclotron maser emission (at higher frequencies), both coherent emission mechanisms that require small numbers of energetic electrons. These comparisons show broad general associations but detailed correspondence remains more elusive.
Gaia DR3 opens a new era of all-sky spectral analysis of stellar populations thanks to the nearly 5.6 million stars observed by the RVS and parametrised by the GSP-spec module. The all-sky Gaia ...chemical cartography allows a powerful and precise chemo-dynamical view of the Milky Way with unprecedented spatial coverage and statistical robustness. First, it reveals the strong vertical symmetry of the Galaxy and the flared structure of the disc. Second, the observed kinematic disturbances of the disc -- seen as phase space correlations -- and kinematic or orbital substructures are associated with chemical patterns that favour stars with enhanced metallicities and lower alpha/Fe abundance ratios compared to the median values in the radial distributions. This is detected both for young objects that trace the spiral arms and older populations. Several alpha, iron-peak elements and at least one heavy element trace the thin and thick disc properties in the solar cylinder. Third, young disc stars show a recent chemical impoverishment in several elements. Fourth, the largest chemo-dynamical sample of open clusters analysed so far shows a steepening of the radial metallicity gradient with age, which is also observed in the young field population. Finally, the Gaia chemical data have the required coverage and precision to unveil galaxy accretion debris and heated disc stars on halo orbits through their alpha/Fe ratio, and to allow the study of the chemo-dynamical properties of globular clusters. Gaia DR3 chemo-dynamical diagnostics open new horizons before the era of ground-based wide-field spectroscopic surveys. They unveil a complex Milky Way that is the outcome of an eventful evolution, shaping it to the present day (abridged).
Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) can stimulate tumor progression by modulating several proneoplastic pathways, including proliferation, angiogenesis, cell migration, invasion, and apoptosis. Although ...steady-state tissue levels of PGE2 stem from relative rates of biosynthesis and breakdown, most reports examining PGE2 have focused solely on the cyclooxygenase-dependent formation of this bioactive lipid. Enzymatic degradation of PGE2 involves the NAD+-dependent 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH). The present study examined a range of normal tissues in the human and mouse and found high levels of 15-PGDH in the large intestine. By contrast, the expression of 15-PGDH is decreased in several colorectal carcinoma cell lines and in other human malignancies such as breast and lung carcinomas. Consistent with these findings, we observe diminished 15-Pgdh expression in ApcMin+/– mouse adenomas. Enzymatic activity of 15-PGDH correlates with expression levels and the genetic disruption of 15-Pgdh completely blocks production of the urinary PGE2 metabolite. Finally, 15-PGDH expression and activity are significantly down-regulated in human colorectal carcinomas relative to matched normal tissue. In summary, these results suggest a novel tumor suppressive role for 15-PGDH due to loss of expression during colorectal tumor progression.
Periodontal disease studies in developing countries over the past four decades indicate periodontitis to be a major problem, even in populations with relatively low caries rates. The aim of this ...study was to document levels of periodontal treatment needs, as well as oral hygiene levels for a large sample covering all ages of an Ethiopian Jewish population recently immigrated into Israel. Over 800 subjects from the total of 15,000 Ethiopians who immigrated were examined utilising the PTNS Index and the OHI-S Index. Results indicate that all the examined population was in need of oral hygiene instruction. Almost 80 per cent are in need of scaling and approximately 20 per cent are in need of more complex treatment such as surgery. Significant differences were found according to age. This could be attributed to the high OHI-S scores, ranging from 2.53 at age 0-12 to 4.82 at the 51+ age group, with a mean Debris Index of 2.12 for the total population. It is suggested that this population should be exposed immediately to preventive and treatment programmes to improve oral hygiene and decrease needs for future, costly periodontal treatment.
Climate change induced permafrost thaw in the Arctic is mobilizing ancient dissolved organic carbon (DOC) into headwater streams; however, DOC exported from the mouth of major arctic rivers appears ...predominantly modern. Here we highlight that ancient (>20,000 years B.P.) permafrost DOC is rapidly utilized by microbes (~50% DOC loss in <7 days) and that permafrost DOC decay rates (0.12 to 0.19 day−1) exceed those for DOC in a major arctic river (Kolyma: 0.09 day−1). Permafrost DOC exhibited unique molecular signatures, including high levels of aliphatics that were rapidly utilized by microbes. As microbes processed permafrost DOC, its distinctive chemical signatures were degraded and converged toward those of DOC in the Kolyma River. The extreme biolability of permafrost DOC and the rapid loss of its distinct molecular signature may explain the apparent contradiction between observed permafrost DOC release to headwaters and the lack of a permafrost signal in DOC exported via major arctic rivers to the ocean.

Abnormal cardiac metabolism contributes to the pathophysiology of advanced heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists have shown ...cardioprotective effects in early clinical studies of patients with advanced heart failure, irrespective of type 2 diabetes status.
To test whether therapy with a GLP-1 agonist improves clinical stability following hospitalization for acute heart failure.
Phase 2, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial of patients with established heart failure and reduced LVEF who were recently hospitalized. Patients were enrolled between August 2013 and March 2015 at 24 US sites.
The GLP-1 agonist liraglutide (n = 154) or placebo (n = 146) via a daily subcutaneous injection; study drug was advanced to a dosage of 1.8 mg/d during the first 30 days as tolerated and continued for 180 days.
The primary end point was a global rank score in which all patients, regardless of treatment assignment, were ranked across 3 hierarchical tiers: time to death, time to rehospitalization for heart failure, and time-averaged proportional change in N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide level from baseline to 180 days. Higher values indicate better health (stability). Exploratory secondary outcomes included primary end point components, cardiac structure and function, 6-minute walk distance, quality of life, and combined events.
Among the 300 patients who were randomized (median age, 61 years interquartile range {IQR}, 52-68 years; 64 21% women; 178 59% with type 2 diabetes; median LVEF of 25% IQR, 19%-33%; median N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide level of 2049 pg/mL IQR, 1054-4235 pg/mL), 271 completed the study. Compared with placebo, liraglutide had no significant effect on the primary end point (mean rank of 146 for the liraglutide group vs 156 for the placebo group, P = .31). There were no significant between-group differences in the number of deaths (19 12% in the liraglutide group vs 16 11% in the placebo group; hazard ratio, 1.10 95% CI, 0.57-2.14; P = .78) or rehospitalizations for heart failure (63 41% vs 50 34%, respectively; hazard ratio, 1.30 95% CI, 0.89-1.88; P = .17) or for the exploratory secondary end points. Prespecified subgroup analyses in patients with diabetes did not reveal any significant between-group differences. The number of investigator-reported hyperglycemic events was 16 (10%) in the liraglutide group vs 27 (18%) in the placebo group and hypoglycemic events were infrequent (2 1% vs 4 3%, respectively).
Among patients recently hospitalized with heart failure and reduced LVEF, the use of liraglutide did not lead to greater posthospitalization clinical stability. These findings do not support the use of liraglutide in this clinical situation.

Spectroscopy of transiting exoplanets can be used to investigate their atmospheric properties
and habitability. Combining radial velocity (RV) and transit data provides additional information
on ...exoplanet physical properties. We detect a transiting rocky planet with an orbital period
of 1.467 days around the nearby red dwarf star Gliese 486. The planet Gliese 486 b is
2.81 Earth masses and 1.31 Earth radii, with uncertainties of 5%, as determined from RV data
and photometric light curves. The host star is at a distance of ~8.1 parsecs, has a J-band magnitude of ~7.2, and is observable from both hemispheres of Earth. On the basis of these properties and the planet’s short orbital period and high equilibrium temperature, we show that this terrestrial planet is suitable for emission and transit spectroscopy.
Hyperlipidemia is associated with endothelial dysfunction and inflammatory disorders. Adenosine and adenosine deaminase (ADA) modulate immune responses and lipid metabolism. Curcumin and rutin are ...polyphenols with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hypolipidemic effects. We evaluated the action of rutin and curcumin in the lipid levels and inflammation, as well as their effect on ADA activity in serum, lymphocytes, platelets, and neutrophils of hyperlipidemic rats. Adult male Wistar rats pretreated with curcumin and/or rutin for 30 days were submitted to Poloxamer-407- induced hyperlipidemia. Biochemical, hematological, and oxidative stress parameters, as well as serum and extracellular ADA activity, were performed 36h post-induction. Hyperlipidemia was confirmed by the increase in total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG). Hematological alterations, elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and increased myeloperoxidase (MPO) and ADA activities were observed in hyperlipidemic rats. Curcumin and the curcumin/rutin association decreased TG and increased high-density lipids (HDL) levels. The pretreatments prevented changes in the hematological parameters, decreased the activities of MPO in plasma and ADA in serum and cells. Cholesterol and ROS levels were not altered by the pretreatments. Our results show that pretreatments with rutin and/or curcumin prevent the hyperlipidemia-induced inflammation. Pretreatments with curcumin and/or rutin are potential complementary therapies in the prevention of hypertriglyceridemia and inflammation.
