This retrospective national study compared the use of alemtuzumab-based conditioning regimens for hematopoietic SCT (HSCT) in acquired severe aplastic anemia with antithymocyte globulin (ATG)-based ...regimens. One hundred patients received alemtuzumab and 55 ATG-based regimens. A matched sibling donor (MSD) was used in 87 (56%), matched unrelated donor (MUD) in 60 (39%) and other related or mismatched unrelated donor (UD) in 8 (5%) patients. Engraftment failure occurred in 9% of the alemtuzumab group and 11% of the ATG group. Five-year OS was 90% for the alemtuzumab and 79% for the ATG groups, P=0.11. For UD HSCT, OS of patients was better when using alemtuzumab (88%) compared with ATG (57%), P=0.026, although smaller numbers of patients received ATG. Similar outcomes for MSD HSCT using alemtuzumab or ATG were seen (91% vs 85%, respectively, P=0.562). A lower risk of chronic GVHD (cGVHD) was observed in the alemtuzumab group (11% vs 26%, P=0.031). On multivariate analysis, use of BM as stem cell source was associated with better OS and EFS, and less acute and cGVHD; young age was associated with better EFS and lower risk of graft failure. This large study confirms successful avoidance of irradiation in the conditioning regimens for MUD HSCT patients.
We present the JCMT Gould Belt Survey's first look results of the southern extent of the Orion A Molecular Cloud ( delta less than or equal to -5:31:27.5). Employing a two-step structure ...identification process, we construct individual catalogues for large-scale regions of significant emission labelled as islands and smaller-scale subregions called fragments using the 850 mu m continuum maps obtained using SCUBA-2. We calculate object masses, sizes, column densities, and concentrations. We discuss fragmentation in terms of a Jeans instability analysis and highlight interesting structures as candidates for follow-up studies. Furthermore, we associate the detected emission with young stellar objects (YSOs) identified by Spitzer and Herschel. We find that although the population of active star-forming regions contains a wide variety of sizes and morphologies, there is a strong positive correlation between the concentration of an emission region and its calculated Jeans instability. There are, however, a number of highly unstable subregions in dense areas of the map that show no evidence of star formation. We find that only ~72 per cent of the YSOs defined as Class 0+I and flat-spectrum protostars coincide with dense 850 mu m emission structures (column densities >3.7 x 10 super( 21) cm super( -2)). The remaining 28 per cent of these objects, which are expected to be embedded in dust and gas, may be misclassified. Finally, we suggest that there is an evolution in the velocity dispersion of YSOs such that sources which are more evolved are associated with higher velocities.
ABSTRACT
We present a spectroscopic survey of 230 white dwarf candidates within 40 pc of the Sun from the William Herschel Telescope and Gran Telescopio Canarias. All candidates were selected from ...Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and in almost all cases, had no prior spectroscopic classifications. We find a total of 191 confirmed white dwarfs and 39 main-sequence star contaminants. The majority of stellar remnants in the sample are relatively cool (〈Teff〉 = 6200 K), showing either hydrogen Balmer lines or a featureless spectrum, corresponding to 89 DA and 76 DC white dwarfs, respectively. We also recover two DBA white dwarfs and 9–10 magnetic remnants. We find two carbon-bearing DQ stars and 14 new metal-rich white dwarfs. This includes the possible detection of the first ultra-cool white dwarf with metal lines. We describe three DZ stars for which we find at least four different metal species, including one that is strongly Fe- and Ni-rich, indicative of the accretion of a planetesimal with core-Earth composition. We find one extremely massive (1.31 ± 0.01 M⊙) DA white dwarf showing weak Balmer lines, possibly indicating stellar magnetism. Another white dwarf shows strong Balmer line emission but no infrared excess, suggesting a low-mass sub-stellar companion. A high spectroscopic completeness (>99 per cent) has now been reached for Gaia DR2 sources within 40-pc sample, in the Northern hemisphere (δ > 0°) and located on the white dwarf cooling track in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. A statistical study of the full northern sample is presented in a companion paper.
ABSTRACT
The Fermi Large Area Telescope gamma-ray source 3FGL J2039.6–5618 contains a periodic optical and X-ray source that was predicted to be a ‘redback’ millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary system. ...However, the conclusive identification required the detection of pulsations from the putative MSP. To better constrain the orbital parameters for a directed search for gamma-ray pulsations, we obtained new optical light curves in 2017 and 2018, which revealed long-term variability from the companion star. The resulting orbital parameter constraints were used to perform a targeted gamma-ray pulsation search using the Einstein@Home-distributed volunteer computing system. This search discovered pulsations with a period of 2.65 ms, confirming the source as a binary MSP now known as PSR J2039–5617. Optical light-curve modelling is complicated, and likely biased, by asymmetric heating on the companion star and long-term variability, but we find an inclination i ≳ 60°, for a low pulsar mass between $1.1\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot } \lt M_{\rm psr} \lt $ 1.6 M⊙, and a companion mass of 0.15–$0.22\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$, confirming the redback classification. Timing the gamma-ray pulsations also revealed significant variability in the orbital period, which we find to be consistent with quadrupole moment variations in the companion star, suggestive of convective activity. We also find that the pulsed flux is modulated at the orbital period, potentially due to inverse Compton scattering between high-energy leptons in the pulsar wind and the companion star’s optical photon field.
ABSTRACT
We present multiwavelength fast timing observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 (ASASSN-18ey), taken with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), Atacama Large ...Millimeter/Sub-Millimeter Array (ALMA), Very Large Telescope (VLT), New Technology Telescope (NTT), Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), and XMM–Newton. Our data set simultaneously samples 10 different electromagnetic bands (radio – X-ray) over a 7-h period during the hard state of the 2018–2019 outburst. The emission we observe is highly variable, displaying multiple rapid flaring episodes. To characterize the variability properties in our data, we implemented a combination of cross-correlation and Fourier analyses. We find that the emission is highly correlated between different bands, measuring time-lags ranging from hundreds of milliseconds between the X-ray/optical bands to minutes between the radio/sub-mm bands. Our Fourier analysis also revealed, for the first time in a black hole X-ray binary, an evolving power spectral shape with electromagnetic frequency. Through modelling these variability properties, we find that MAXI J1820+070 launches a highly relativistic ($\Gamma =6.81^{+1.06}_{-1.15}$) and confined ($\phi =0.45^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$ deg) jet, which is carrying a significant amount of power away from the system (equivalent to $\sim 0.6 \, L_{1-100{\rm keV}}$). We additionally place constraints on the jet composition and magnetic field strength in the innermost jet base region. Overall, this work demonstrates that time-domain analysis is a powerful diagnostic tool for probing jet physics, where we can accurately measure jet properties with time-domain measurements alone.
Abstract
We present a spectroscopic survey of 248 white dwarf candidates within 40 pc of the Sun; of these 244 are in the Southern hemisphere. Observations were performed mostly with the Very Large ...Telescope (X-Shooter) and Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope. Almost all candidates were selected from Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3). We find a total of 246 confirmed white dwarfs, 209 of which had no previously published spectra, and two main-sequence star contaminants. Of these, 100 white dwarfs display hydrogen Balmer lines, 69 have featureless spectra, and two show only neutral helium lines. Additionally, 14 white dwarfs display traces of carbon, while 37 have traces of other elements that are heavier than helium. We observe 35 magnetic white dwarfs through the detection of Zeeman splitting of their hydrogen Balmer or metal spectral lines. High spectroscopic completeness (> 97 per cent) has now been reached, such that we have 1058 confirmed Gaia DR3 white dwarfs out of 1083 candidates within 40 pc of the Sun at all declinations.
The atmospheric effects of precipitating electrons are not fully understood, and uncertainties are large for electrons with energies greater than ~30 keV. These electrons are underrepresented in ...modeling studies today, primarily because valid measurements of their precipitating spectral energy fluxes are lacking. This paper compares simulations from the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) that incorporated two different estimates of precipitating electron fluxes for electrons with energies greater than 30 keV. The estimates are both based on data from the Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite Medium Energy Proton and Electron Detector (MEPED) instruments but differ in several significant ways. Most importantly, only one of the estimates includes both the 0° and 90° telescopes from the MEPED instrument. Comparisons are presented between the WACCM results and satellite observations poleward of 30°S during the austral winter of 2003, a period of significant energetic electron precipitation. Both of the model simulations forced with precipitating electrons with energies >30 keV match the observed descent of reactive odd nitrogen better than a baseline simulation that included auroral electrons, but no higher energy electrons. However, the simulation that included both telescopes shows substantially better agreement with observations, particularly at midlatitudes. The results indicate that including energies >30 keV and the full range of pitch angles to calculate precipitating electron fluxes is necessary for improving simulations of the atmospheric effects of energetic electron precipitation.

The study presented here investigates the effects from energetic electron precipitation (EEP) in the southern hemisphere winter of 2003. Electron precipitation is common during periods of enhanced geomagnetic activity and can create reactive nitrogen oxides and hydrogen oxides that can destroy ozone. Most global climate models currently do not include precipitating electrons with energies greater than 30 keV. To test whether this deficiency is important, this investigation compares observations with model simulations that included electrons with energies greater than 30 keV, as observed by the Medium Energy Proton and Electron Detector (MEPED) satellite instruments. In addition, one of the EEP data sets used in the simulations included data from just one of the telescopes on the MEPED instruments, whereas the other included data from both of the telescopes. We found that including both of the telescopes is important for capturing chemistry changes at polar and subpolar latitudes. The model simulation that only included only one of the telescopes showed significant improvement compared to a simulation with only low energy electrons. However, it did not perform as well as the model simulation that included both MEPED telescopes. This work is important because it shows that including energies >30 keV and the full range of precipitating electron pitch angles is necessary to show the impact electrons have on the atmosphere and provides an EEP data set for use in future model simulations.

A laser wakefield acceleration study has been performed in the matched, self-guided, blowout regime producing 720 +/- 50 MeV quasimonoenergetic electrons with a divergence Deltatheta_{FWHM} of 2.85 ...+/- 0.15 mrad using a 10 J, 60 fs 0.8 microm laser. While maintaining a nearly constant plasma density (3 x 10{18} cm{-3}), the energy gain increased from 75 to 720 MeV when the plasma length was increased from 3 to 8 mm. Absolute charge measurements indicate that self-injection of electrons occurs when the laser power P exceeds 3 times the critical power P{cr} for relativistic self-focusing and saturates around 100 pC for P/P{cr} > 5. The results are compared with both analytical scalings and full 3D particle-in-cell simulations.
We present observations of the Cepheus Flare obtained as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Legacy Survey (GBLS) with the SCUBA-2 instrument. We produce a catalogue of ...sources found by SCUBA-2, and separate these into starless cores and protostars. We determine masses and densities for each of our sources, using source temperatures determined by the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. We compare the properties of starless cores in four different molecular clouds: L1147/58, L1172/74, L1251 and L1228. We find that the core mass functions for each region typically show shallower-than-Salpeter behaviour. We find that L1147/58 and L1228 have a high ratio of starless cores to Class II protostars, while L1251 and L1174 have a low ratio, consistent with the latter regions being more active sites of current star formation, while the former are forming stars less actively. We determine that if modelled as thermally supported Bonnor-Ebert spheres, most of our cores have stable configurations accessible to them. We estimate the external pressures on our cores using archival 13CO velocity dispersion measurements and find that our cores are typically pressure confined, rather than gravitationally bound. We perform a virial analysis on our cores, and find that they typically cannot be supported against collapse by internal thermal energy alone, due primarily to the measured external pressures. This suggests that the dominant mode of internal support in starless cores in the Cepheus Flare is either non-thermal motions or internal magnetic fields.
