The sanatorium Morelli was built in Sondalo during the fascist era (1932-1940). The strong visual impact of the structure is counterbalanced by a delicate acoustic approach, made necessary by the ...need to create silent places for supporting medical treatments. The project of “silence” is not only the result of a punitive stance, which simply intends to reduce sound emissions, but above all the effect of a positive attitude, aiming at selecting specific sounds, in accordance with the social and environmental characteristics of place. This produces the sense of participation and identification of the users, generating collective cares and protection. That of Morelli, indeed, is a relevant lesson for the contemporary reflection, with a view to finding good strategies for soundscape design.
This interview focuses on the research project “Il rumore lontano” (The distant noise), undertaken at the DFA - Dipartimento Formazione e Apprendimento of SUPSI in 2017. The project, coordinated by ...Xabier Erkizia and Lorena Rocca, aimed at investigating the potential of soun to identify the cultural and geographical characteristics of Canton Ticino through its railway network. The project resulted in the book “The distant noise” (SUPSI, Libe edizioni, Audiolab 2018), with contributions by Xabier Erkizia, Lorena Rocca, Hillel Schwartz, Franco Farinelli. The magnificent brilliance of the majority of the contemporary buildings can be depicted through the image of a mirror that reflects its surroundings, avoiding any relationship between the interior ...and the exterior. This introduces an articulated as well as disturbing and ambiguous scenario, by which the aesthetic formulas of architecture meet the spectacular models of marketing and media communication. The Aesthetics rising from this “paradigm of mirror” loses its connection with a shared and common notion of beauty, considering it as a mere object of individual exchange. “i-Aesthetics” represents a concept introduced to synthesize these traits, that make the evaluation of the architectural objects, as well as of our relationship with the space, radically ambivalent.

The pandemic widened the questions on the typological, functional, and managerial inadequacy of the university housing, highlighting its limits and criticality. A polycrisis that suggests to ...critically rethink the spatial, organizational, functional, and managerial models, to reflect on the opportunity to open to the needs of new and varied users, not necessarily academics, but above all to broaden the reasoning to the policies tied to the EU internationalization programs. To this end, a new overall vision seems urgent, able to accompany the recovery in terms of innovation, and inaugurate, in competition with the use of the substantial funding of the PNRR, a new season of student accommodation interventions.
Rooftop architecture reveals great potentialities in favoring a new interpretation of urban spaces and new ways of living the city. Thanks to the redefinition of the morpho-techno-typological ...characteristics of urban-fabric, the verticalization and concentration of the city and its skyline, rooftop architecture creates unexpected spaces in contemporary metropolis, encouraging the performance upgrade of buildings and introducing new functions. This leads to the growth of innovative social and collective models. At present, the process is compromised by a lack of consideration of the contextual frame and the ‘genius loci’, due to the absence of a regulation able to relate the quality of interventions to a landscape scale. This means missing an opportunity for rethinking urban regeneration.
Conclusions and perspectives Rooftop architecture represents an opportunity to support urban regeneration and concentration processes, in the perspective of reducing land use, encouraging ecological ...requalification of the existing, forerunning new vertical cities. An interesting case study is the Rotterdam experience, where the Municipality - with the operational support of De Urbanisten - started in 2015 a pilot project to test innovative methods for managing and controlling the development of the "top spaces" of city, exploring their potentialities for housing, environment and landscape. The plan is based on the definition of four categories, which are associated to buildings according to their position and their technical, structural, functional characteristics - "green" roofs for agricultural use, "blue" roofs for collecting and cleaning water, "yellow" roofs for producing sustainable energy, "red" roofs consists in the attempt to control the whole process through an organic vision, determining the destination of every single building in relation to its social and physical context, preventing the chaotic spread of interventions and favoring a clear development of 'urban decorum. On the one hand, the Italian situation is worsened by the presence of fragmented bureaucratic apparatus, which means a large number of decision makers - commissions, regional and local authorities, superintendences etc. - leading to stagnation and lack of incentives to innovation and research.
Balconies, lodges, green roofs, solariums, etc. represent one of the fundamentals (according to the definition by Rem Koolhaas at Biennale di Venezia 2014) of contemporary architecture, that is ...triggering a new debate on the contemporary city and its landscape. The link between these solutions and nature is one of the most influential factors for their success. On the one hand this could be considered as a positive aspect for the sustainability of the human action on the planet - in strictly environ mental terms. On the other hand, it poses urgent questions about the simplification of the aesthetic and cultural categories that are governing the evolution of the city.
