We report on the results from a search for dark matter axions with the HAYSTAC experiment using a microwave cavity detector at frequencies between 5.6 and 5.8 GHz. We exclude axion models with two ...photon coupling gaγγ≳2×10−14 GeV−1, a factor of 2.7 above the benchmark KSVZ model over the mass range 23.15<ma<24.0 μeV. This doubles the range reported in our previous paper. We achieve a near-quantum-limited sensitivity by operating at a temperature T<hν/2kB and incorporating a Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA), with improvements in the cooling of the cavity further reducing the experiment’s system noise temperature to only twice the standard quantum limit at its operational frequency, an order of magnitude better than any other dark matter microwave cavity experiment to date. This result concludes the first phase of the HAYSTAC program utilizing a conventional copper cavity and a single JPA.

The DAMA collaboration first made their claim for the detection of dark matter in the late 1990s. Since then, there have been many speculations as to the origin of their annual modulation signal and ...many of the hypotheses have been ruled out. At the same time, many direct detection dark matter experiments using various target medium, including those that use the same target of thallium-doped sodium iodide, have ruled out dark matter as the source of the annual modulation observed in DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA. In this paper, I will discuss the status of the ongoing efforts to resolve these conflicting observations.
We present new constraints on the dark matter-induced annual modulation signal using 1.7 years of COSINE-100 data with a total exposure of 97.7 kg yr. The COSINE-100 experiment, consisting of 106 kg ...of NaI(Tl) target material, is designed to carry out a model-independent test of DAMA/LIBRA's claim of WIMP discovery by searching for the same annual modulation signal using the same NaI(Tl) target. The crystal data show a 2.7 cpd/kg/keV background rate on average in the 2-6 keV energy region of interest. Using a χ-squared minimization method we observe best fit values for modulation amplitude and phase of 0.0092±0.0067 cpd/kg/keV and 127.2±45.9 d, respectively.
Particles are often electrostatically charged by frictional contact during powder-handling operations. This phenomenon is called ‘triboelectric charging’ or ‘contact electrification’. The charged ...particles cause problems such as particle deposition and adhesion. In addition, if particles are excessively charged, an electrostatic discharge may occur, which can pose a risk of fire and explosion hazards; thus, to mitigate the adverse effects, it is important to elucidate the underlying triboelectric charging mechanisms. The electrostatics is, on the other hand, very useful in a number of applications that have been developed using the principles. In this review, the basic concepts and theories of charge transfer between solid surfaces are summarized, and chemical factors depending on materials and environmental effects are described. To theoretically analyze the process of particle charging, relevant models are discussed. Using the models, particle charging by repeated impacts on a wall is formulated. To experimentally evaluate particle charging, measurement and characterization methods are outlined. Furthermore, important applications and computer simulations are described.

LMS during 2001 and 2015 was analysed. Information used included age, sex, address (city or county), chief complaint, present history, dietary history, overseas travelling history, medical imaging findings and laboratory data (white blood cell count, peripheral blood eosinophil number and total IgE). The sex ratio of the disease was 2.37 (male/female = 641/270). The number of patients not younger than 20 years old were 97.8 and 95.1 % among males and females, respectively. Major disease types were visceral, ocular, neural and asymptomatic. The visceral type was more prevalent in older patients, while younger patients were more vulnerable to ocular symptoms. More than two-thirds of the patients whose dietary habits were recorded had a history of ingesting raw or undercooked animal meat. LMS caused by

is primarily a disease of adult males in Japan, who probably acquired infections by eating raw or undercooked animal meat/liver. Healthcare specialists should draw public attention to the risk of raw or undercooked animal meat in Europe as well.
In experiments searching for axionic dark matter, the use of the standard threshold-based data analysis discards valuable information. We present a Bayesian analysis framework that builds on an ...existing processing protocol B. M. Brubaker, L. Zhong, S. K. Lamoreaux, K. W. Lehnert, and K. A. van Bibber, Phys. Rev. D 96, 123008 (2017) to extract more information from the data of coherent axion detectors such as operating haloscopes. The analysis avoids logical subtleties that accompany the standard analysis framework and enables greater experimental flexibility on future data runs. Performing this analysis on the existing data from the HAYSTAC experiment, we find improved constraints on the axion-photon coupling gγ while also identifying the most promising regions of parameter space within the 23.15 – 24.0 μ eV mass range. A comparison with the standard threshold analysis suggests a 36% improvement in scan rate from our analysis, demonstrating the utility of this framework for future axion haloscope analyses.

COSINE is a dark matter search experiment based on an array of low background NaI(Tl) crystals located at the Yangyang underground laboratory. The assembly of COSINE-100 was completed in the summer ...of 2016 and the detector is currently collecting physics quality data aimed at reproducing the DAMA/LIBRA experiment that reported an annual modulation signal. Stable operation has been achieved and will continue for at least 2 years. Here, we describe the design of COSINE-100, including the shielding arrangement, the configuration of the NaI(Tl) crystal detection elements, the veto systems, and the associated operational systems, and we show the current performance of the experiment.
Ytterbium-doped solid-core photonic bandgap fiber amplifiers operating at the long-wavelength edge of the ytterbium gain band are reported. The low-loss bandgap transmission window is formed in the ...very low gain region, whilst outside the bandgap, large attenuation inhibits the exponential growth of amplified spontaneous emission in the huge-gain 1030-1100 nm region. Hence parasitic-lasing-free, high-power amplification with a marked efficiency is enabled. A 32 W output at 1156 nm with a 66% slope efficiency and 30 W output at 1178 nm with a 58% slope efficiency were successfully obtained. To our knowledge, these are the highest output powers generating from active photonic bandgap fibers, as well as from ytterbium-doped fiber lasers at these wavelengths.
The DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has reported the observation of an annual modulation in the event rate that has been attributed to dark matter interactions over the last two decades. However, even ...though tremendous efforts to detect similar dark matter interactions were pursued, no definitive evidence has been observed to corroborate the DAMA/LIBRA signal. Many studies assuming various dark matter models have attempted to reconcile DAMA/LIBRA's modulation signals and null results from other experiments, however no clear conclusion can be drawn. Apart from the dark matter hypothesis, several studies have examined the possibility that the modulation is induced by variations in detector's environment or their specific analysis methods. In particular, a recent study presents a possible cause of the annual modulation from an analysis method adopted by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment in which the observed annual modulation could be reproduced by a slowly varying time-dependent background. Here, we study the COSINE-100 data using an analysis method similar to the one adopted by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment and observe a significant annual modulation, however the modulation phase is almost opposite to that of the DAMA/LIBRA data. Assuming the same background composition for COSINE-100 and DAMA/LIBRA, simulated experiments for the DAMA/LIBRA without dark matter signals also provide significant annual modulation with an amplitude similar to DAMA/LIBRA with opposite phase. Even though this observation does not directly explain the DAMA/LIBRA results directly, this interesting phenomenon motivates more profound studies of the time-dependent DAMA/LIBRA background data.
