The first measurement of heavy-flavor production by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target mode is presented. The production of J/ψ and D^{0} mesons is studied with beams of protons of different ...energies colliding with gaseous targets of helium and argon with nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of sqrts_{NN}=86.6 and 110.4 GeV, respectively. The J/ψ and D^{0} production cross sections in pHe collisions in the rapidity range 2, 4.6 are found to be σ_{J/ψ}=652±33(stat)±42(syst) nb/nucleon and σ_{D^{0}}=80.8±2.4(stat)±6.3(syst) μb/nucleon, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. No evidence for a substantial intrinsic charm content of the nucleon is observed in the large Bjorken-x region.
Abstract The decays B+ → J/ψπ+π − K+ are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1 collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and ...2018. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions with the intermediate ψ2(3823), χc1(3872) and ψ(2S) states are reported. The decay of B+ → ψ2(3823)K+ with ψ2(3823) → J/ψπ+π − is observed for the first time with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. The mass differences between the ψ2(3823), χc1(3872) and ψ(2S) states are measured to be m χ c 1 3872 − m ψ 2 3823 = 47.50 ± 0.53 ± 0.13 MeV / c 2 , m ψ 2 3823 − m ψ 2 2 S = 137.98 ± 0.53 ± 0.14 MeV / c 2 , m χ c 1 3872 − m ψ 2 2 S = 185.49 ± 0.06 ± 0.03 MeV / c 2 , $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{m}_{\upchi_{\mathrm{c}1}(3872)}-{m}_{\uppsi_2(3823)}=47.50\pm 0.53\pm 0.13\;\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}{m}_{\uppsi_2(3823)}-{m}_{\uppsi_2\left(2\mathrm{S}\right)}=137.98\pm 0.53\pm 0.14\;\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}{m}_{\upchi_{\mathrm{c}1}(3872)}-{m}_{\uppsi_2\left(2\mathrm{S}\right)}=185.49\pm 0.06\pm 0.03\;\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\end{array}} $$ resulting in the most precise determination of the χc1(3872) mass. The width of the ψ2(3823) state is found to be below 5.2 MeV at 90% confidence level. The Breit-Wigner width of the χc1(3872) state is measured to be Γ χ c 1 3872 BW = 0.96 − 0.18 + 0.19 ± 0.21 MeV $$ {\Gamma}_{\upchi_{\mathrm{c}1}(3872)}^{\mathrm{BW}}={0.96}_{-0.18}^{+0.19}\pm 0.21\;\mathrm{MeV} $$ which is inconsistent with zero by 5.5 standard deviations.

The production of J/ψ mesons is studied in proton-lead collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=8.16 TeV with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The double differential cross-sections ...of prompt and nonprompt J/ψ production are measured as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum and rapidity in the nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass frame. Forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors are determined. The results are compared with theoretical calculations based on collinear factorisation using nuclear parton distribution functions, on the colour glass condensate or on coherent energy loss models.
Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sNN=5 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on ...data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, Δη, and relative azimuthal angle, Δϕ, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, Δϕ≈0, is observed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.9. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to η=4.9. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

Evidence for the decay mode X(3872)→ψ(2S)γ in B+→X(3872)K+ decays is found with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton–proton collisions, ...corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1, collected with the LHCb detector, at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The ratio of the branching fraction of the X(3872)→ψ(2S)γ decay to that of the X(3872)→J/ψγ decay is measured to beB(X(3872)→ψ(2S)γ)B(X(3872)→J/ψγ)=2.46±0.64±0.29, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The measured value does not support a pure DD¯⁎ molecular interpretation of the X(3872) state.

The long-distance contribution to the Formula: see text decay is modelled as a sum of relativistic Breit-Wigner amplitudes representing different vector meson resonances decaying to muon pairs, each with their own magnitude and phase. The measured phases of the Formula: see text and Formula: see text resonances are such that the interference with the short-distance component in dimuon mass regions far from their pole masses is small. In addition, constraints are placed on the Wilson coefficients, Formula: see text and Formula: see text, and the branching fraction of the short-distance component is measured.

Searches are performed for a low-mass dimuon resonance,
X
, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated ...luminosity of 5.1 fb
−
1
and collected with the LHCb detector. The
X
bosons can either decay promptly or displaced from the proton-proton collision, where in both cases the requirements placed on the event and the assumptions made about the production mechanisms are kept as minimal as possible. The searches for promptly decaying
X
bosons explore the mass range from near the dimuon threshold up to 60 GeV, with nonnegligible
X
widths considered above 20 GeV. The searches for displaced
X → μ
+
μ
−
decays consider masses up to 3 GeV. None of the searches finds evidence for a signal and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the
X → μ
+
μ
−
cross sections, each with minimal model dependence. In addition, these results are used to place world-leading constraints on GeV-scale bosons in the two-Higgs-doublet and hidden-valley scenarios.
The data sample of Λ_{b}^{0}→J/ψpK^{-} decays acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb^{-1}, is inspected for the presence of ...J/ψp or J/ψK^{-} contributions with minimal assumptions about K^{-}p contributions. It is demonstrated at more than nine standard deviations that Λ_{b}^{0}→J/ψpK^{-} decays cannot be described with K^{-}p contributions alone, and that J/ψp contributions play a dominant role in this incompatibility. These model-independent results support the previously obtained model-dependent evidence for P_{c}^{+}→J/ψp charmonium-pentaquark states in the same data sample.
