Elevation gradients have been useful to study distributional patterns of soil organisms since the time of Humboldt but only recently these patterns have been studied for soil microorganisms. Here we ...report the results on species diversity and composition of soil- and moss-dwelling testate amoeba assemblages along a 1400 m elevation gradient (904–2377 m a.s.l.) on Mount Fuji (Japan) from temperate forest to alpine vegetation. In total, 95 testate amoeba taxa belonging to 29 genera were identified. The core of testate amoeba assemblages was formed by ubiquitous species such as Trinema lineare, Euglypha laevis, Cryptodifflugia oviformis, and Trinema complanatum. However, several taxa with limited geographic distribution were also observed (e.g., Centropyxis latideflandriana, C. stenodeflandriana, Plagiopyxis cf. barrosi, Heleopera rectangularis, and Distomatopyxis couillardi). Species diversity indices (species richness and Shannon’s index) were characterised by bell-shaped patterns peaking at ∼ 1700 m in the subalpine mixed conifer-deciduous forest. The species composition of testate amoeba assemblages was best explained by the vegetation types which accounted for 12.3% of the total variation. Overall, these findings indicate that elevation effects on species composition of testate amoeba assemblages are strongly mediated by vegetation.
A better understanding of past climate change is vital to our ability to predict possible future environmental dynamics. This study attempts to investigate the dynamic features of the temporal ...variability of peat humification, water table depth and air temperature by analyzing palaeoecological data from the Valdai Uplands region (Central European Russia). The regression analysis revealed the presence of a periodicity of about 6000 years in the reconstructed peat humification timeseries. Nonlinear analysis showed that humification time variability, water table depth and air temperature exhibit persistent long-range correlations of 1/f type. This indicates that a fluctuation in these variables in the past is very likely to be followed by a similar one in the future, but is magnified by 1/f power-law. In addition, it dictates that humification, water table depth and temperature are key parameters of a system that implies the existence of a special structure, such as self-organized criticality, operating close to a minimum stability configuration, and achieves it without any fine adjustment by external forcing. These conclusions point to new avenues for modeling future ecosystem disturbances and, in particular, for predicting relevant extreme events.
This study presents the long-term forest history in the forest–tundra ecotone of the Low Yenisei River basin. The new high-resolution pollen and macroscopic charcoal data were inferred from the 8.6 m ...long peat archive covering the last 6300 years. Climate reconstructions are based on the application of the best modern analogue technique using pollen data. Our findings suggest an alternation of phases of middle-taiga forests of Larix sibirica, Abies sibirica, Picea obovata, and Pinus sibirica (intervals of climate warming: 6320–6050, 5790–5370, 4480–4220, and 3600–2700 cal yr BP, respectively) and open larch woodlands with the participation of Betula, Picea, and Pinus sibirica, typical for northern taiga (intervals of climate cooling and increasing humidification: 5370–4480, 4220–3600 cal yr BP, respectively). The vegetation pattern of the region became similar to the modern one around 2700 cal yr BP. Climate warming caused a northward shift of vegetation-zone boundaries in Yenisei Siberia and an expansion of the range of Abies sibirica by about 200 km to the north compared to the present day. The increased frequency of fires and biomass burning during warm periods may promote the melting of the local permafrost, thereby enhancing the tree growth and regeneration.
Microbiomes are integral to ecological health and human well-being; however, their ecological and evolutionary drivers have not been systematically investigated, especially in urban park ecosystems. ...As microbes have different levels of tolerance to environmental changes and habitat preferences, they can be categorized into habitat generalists and specialists. Here, we explored the ecological and evolutionary characteristics of both prokaryotic and microeukaryotic habitat generalists and specialists from six urban parks across five habitat types, including moss, soil, tree hole, water, and sediment. Our results revealed that different ecological and evolutionary processes maintained and regulated microbial diversity in urban park ecosystems. Under ecological perspective, community assembly of microbial communities was mainly driven by stochastic processes; however, deterministic processes were higher for habitat specialists than generalists. Microbial interactions were highly dynamic among habitats, and habitat specialists played key roles as module hubs in intradomain networks. In aquatic interdomain networks, microeukaryotic habitat specialists and prokaryotic habitat specialists played crucial roles as module hubs and connectors, respectively. Furthermore, analyzing evolutionary characteristics, our results revealed that habitat specialists had a much higher diversification potential than generalists, while generalists showed shorter phylogenetic branch lengths as well as larger genomes than specialists. This study broadens our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary features of microbial habitat generalists and specialists in urban park ecosystems across multi-habitat.
Urban parks, as an important urban greenspace, play essential roles in ecosystem services and are important hotspots for microbes. Microbial diversity is driven by different ecological and evolutionary processes, while little is currently known about the distinct roles of ecological and evolutionary features in shaping microbial diversity in urban park ecosystems. We explored the ecological and evolutionary characteristics of prokaryotic and microeukaryotic habitat generalists and specialists in urban park ecosystems based on a representative set of different habitats. We found that different ecological and evolutionary drivers jointly maintained and regulated microbial diversity in urban park microbiomes through analyzing the community assembly process, ecological roles in hierarchical interaction, and species diversification potential. These findings significantly advance our understanding regarding the mechanisms governing microbial diversity in urban park ecosystems.

Testate amoebae are unicellular eukaryotic organisms covered with an external skeleton called a shell. They are an important component of many terrestrial ecosystems, especially peatlands, where they ...can be preserved in peat deposits and used as a proxy of surface wetness in paleoecological reconstructions. Here, we represent a database from a vast but poorly studied region of the Western Siberia Lowland containing information on TA occurrences in relation to substrate moisture and WTD. The dataset includes 88 species from 32 genera, with 2181 incidences and 21,562 counted individuals. All samples were collected in oligotrophic peatlands and prepared using the method of wet sieving with a subsequent sedimentation of aqueous suspensions. This database contributes to the understanding of the distribution of testate amoebae and can be further used in large-scale investigations.
The paper describes a dataset, comprising 236 surface moss samples and 143 testate amoeba taxa. The samples were collected in 11 Sphagnum-dominated bogs during frost-free seasons of 2004, 2007, 2009, ...2017, and 2022. For the whole dataset, the sampling effort was sufficient in terms of observed species richness (143 species in total), though a regional species pool is deemed to be discovered incompletely (143 species is its lower 95 % confidence limit using Chao’s estimator). The local community composition demonstrated high heterogeneity in a reduced ordination space. It supports the opinion that the high versatility of bog ecosystems should be taken into account during ecological studies.
The genus Euglypha contains the largest number of filose testate amoeba taxa which were mainly described based on the morphological characteristics of shells. Despite the increasing amount of ...molecular data, the phylogenetic relationships within the genus Euglypha remain unresolved. In this work we provide new data on SSU rRNA gene sequences, light and electron microscopy for the two euglyphid species Euglypha bryophilaBrown, 1911 and Euglypha cristataLeidy, 1874. Both species are characterised by the presence of a turf of spines on the aboral pole of the shells but differ in shell cross sections (elliptical and circular, respectively). A newly revealed feature of E. bryophila is a three-lobed thickening at the anterior margin and an elongated lobe at the posterior margin of apertural plates. The phylogenetic analysis shows that the species group together with the previously sequenced taxa of the genus Euglypha according to the shell cross-section. The subdivision of the genus based on the shell symmetry may reflect evolutionary trends to complication of the shell from radial to biradial symmetry. We also suggest that the shape of the anterior thickening of apertural plates and the lobe at the posterior margin can be used to distinguish Euglypha at the species level.
