Eleven biconical vessels from the Copper Age sites Pietrele and Blejeşti (Romania) have been investigated using p-XRF. In most cases, traces of lead could be measured on their surfaces. Samples of ...slag-like material from two vessels and the clay of one vessel were investigated using laboratory methods, namely SEM, XRD, LIA and optical microscopy. The vessels were obviously used as a kind of crucible in which slag-like remains and galena ore were detected. It still remains unclear as to what final product was gained by smelting galena in this way. The amount of these such vessels in the Pietrele settlement, their appearance as grave goods in Pietrele and Vărăști (Romania), and their supposed occurrence in a number of other Copper Age settlements in Romania and Bulgaria show the significance of this phenomenon. It must have been a widespread and more or less well known practice, an important part of cultural habit during a particular period in the Lower Danube region and likely even farther afield. For the first time, extensive experimentation with lead ore can be shown in a clear chronological horizon, ca. 4400-4300 BCE in southeastern Europe.

The 10 m high Copper Age settlement mound of Pietrele-Măgura Gorgana, situated close to the Danube was part of a large settlement system spread over the whole Westpontic region during the 5th ...millennium BC. The mound was the outstanding part of a far more complex and larger flat settlement as we now know thanks to geomagnetic prospections and subsequent excavations. Only recently it became evident that the oldest parts of the flat settlement belong to the late 6th millennium. Around 1000 years settlement history (5200– 4250 BC) offers insight into one of the most dynamic periods in human history coined by first metallurgical activities. During the settlement period a lake covered huge parts of the floodplain. It provided not only a considerable part of the diet, but ensured continuous and extensive regional exchange. Sedimentological and paleo-ecological research gave evidence that the paleo-lake started to exist from early to mid-Holocene onward until it was subdivided in smaller lakes by prograding branches of the Danube about 1000 years ago. The ecological conditions within the lake changed considerably, which can be deduced from geochemical, paleobotanical and micro-faunistic analyses and which might be attributed to human impact during the settlement period. This was corroborated by studies on the former landscape around the settlement mound of Pietrele and the geomorphological processes induced by land use and settlement activities.
Așezarea tell de la Pietrele-Măgura Gorgana, cu înălțimea de 10 m, situată în apropierea Dunării, a făcut parte dintr-un întins sistem de aşezări, extins de-a lungul întregului spațiu vest pontic, în timpul mileniului V î. Hr. Mulțumită prospecțiunilor geomagnetice și cercetărilor care le-au urmat, se cunoaște faptul că tell-ul este elementul cel mai înalt al unui ansamblu de habitat complex și întins. De curând, s-a lămurit faptul că cea mai veche așezare se datează către sfârșitul mileniului VI î. Hr. Cei aproape o mie de ani de istorie a habitatului (5200– 4250 î. Hr.) oferă o privire asupra uneia dintre cele mai dinamice perioade din istoria umanității, marcată de primele activități metalurgice. Pe parcursul locuirii, cea mai mare parte a câmpiei inundabile a fost acoperită de un lac, ceea ce a influențat nu doar dieta, ci a mijlocit și un schimb regional extins. Cercetările sedimentologice și paleoecologice au dovedit că paleolacul exista începând de la limita dintre holocenul timpuriu și mijlociu, urmând să fie fragmentat în lacuri mai mici, prin extinderea brațelor Dunării, acum circa 1000 de ani. Condițiile ecologice ale lacului s-au modificat substanțial, ceea ce se poate deduce din analizele geochimice, paleobotanice și microfaunistice și s-ar putea atribui impactului uman de-a lungul perioadei de locuire. Afirmaţia este întărită de studii asupra fostului peisaj din împrejurimile tell-ului de la Pietrele și de procesele geomorfologice determinate de exploatarea mediului și de activități de habitat.

Tell‐ ul de la Pietrele este un sit reper pentru cunoașterea comunităților gumelnițene de la nord de Dunăre. Cercetările arheologice au debutat în anul 1943, sub conducerea lui Dumitru Berciu. Acesta ...a publicat un raport de sinteză al descoperirilor, fiind însă vorba despre o simplă enumerare cantitativă, fără o descriere a stigmatelor tehnologice și de uzură prezente pe piesele confecționate din materii dure animale. În consecință, am încercat să identificăm numărul pieselor arheologice provenind din vechile săpături aflate în colecția Institutului de Arheologie „ Vasile Pârvan” și, apoi, să prezentăm un alt tip de analiză, pe baza căreia să putem trage concluzii legate de caracteristicile economice și spirituale ale comunității gumelnițene de la Pietrele. Într‐ o primă etapă, am încercat identificarea materiilor prime din care au fost confecționate piesele. Într‐ o a doua etapă, în cadrul grupelor create, au fost stabilite categoriile tipologice. Pentru fiecare dintre acestea, s‐ a urmărit reconstituirea schemei operaționale și, apoi, identificarea posibilelor stigmate de uzură, care ar putea indica felul în care au fost folosite artefactele.
The tell‐ settlement of Pietrele is a landmark for the understanding of the Gumelnița communities north of the Danube. Archaeological research began in 1943 under the direction of D. Berciu who subsequently published a synthesis report of the main finds but it was just a quantitative enumeration of items without a description of the technological and use‐ wear marks on the hard animal material artefacts. Consequently, we tried to identify the number of such archaeological items from the old excavations which are still present in the collection of the “ Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology and then to present a different type of analysis drawing conclusions related to the economic and spiritual characteristics of the Gumelnița community at Pietrele. Firstly, we aimed to identify the raw materials from which the pieces were made. Secondly, typological categories were established. For each of these categories, the operational scheme was reconstituted and then the possible use‐ wear marks were identified, pointing towards the way the artefacts were used.
