When performing structural inspection, the generation of three-dimensional (3D) point clouds is a common resource. Those are usually generated from photogrammetry or through laser scan techniques. ...However, a significant drawback for complete inspection is the presence of covering vegetation, hiding possible structural problems, and making difficult the acquisition of proper object surfaces in order to provide a reliable diagnostic. Therefore, this research's main contribution is developing an effective vegetation removal methodology through the use of a deep learning structure that is capable of identifying and extracting covering vegetation in 3D point clouds. The proposed approach uses pre and post-processing filtering stages that take advantage of colored point clouds, if they are available, or operate independently. The results showed high classification accuracy and good effectiveness when compared with similar methods in the literature. After this step, if color is available, then a color filter is applied, enhancing the results obtained. Besides, the results are analyzed in light of real Structure From Motion (SFM) reconstruction data, which further validates the proposed method. This research also presented a colored point cloud library of bushes built for the work used by other studies in the field.
The detection of bond-slip between the reinforcing bar (RB) and concrete is of great importance to ensure the safety of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The techniques to monitor the connection ...between the RB and concrete are in constant development, with special focus on the ones with straightforward operation and simple non-intrusive implementation. In this work, a simple configuration is developed using 10 optical fiber sensors, allowing different sections of the same RC structure to be monitored. Since the RB may suffer different strains along its length, the location of the sensors is critical to provide an early warning about any displacement. Bragg gratings were inscribed in both silica and polymer optical fibers and these devices worked as displacement sensors by monitoring the strain variations on the fibers. The results showed that these sensors can be easily implemented in a civil construction environment, and due to the small dimensions, they can be a non-intrusive technique when multiple sensors are implemented in the same RC structure.

-adrenoceptor agonists results in disease control for many patients, but those who exhibit severe asthma are often unresponsive to conventional treatment, experiencing worse quality of life, frequent exacerbations, and increasing healthcare costs. Bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell (BMMC) transplantation has been shown to reduce airway inflammation and remodeling and improve lung function in experimental models of allergic asthma.
This is a case series of three patients who presented severe asthma, unresponsive to conventional therapy and omalizumab. They received a single intravenous dose of autologous BMMCs (2 × 10
) and were periodically evaluated for 1 year after the procedure. Endpoint assessments included physical examination, quality of life questionnaires, imaging (computed tomography, single-photon emission computed tomography, and ventilation/perfusion scan), lung function tests, and a 6-min walk test.
All patients completed the follow-up protocol. No serious adverse events attributable to BMMC transplantation were observed during or after the procedure. Lung function remained stable throughout. A slight increase in ventilation of the right lung was observed on day 120 after BMMC transplantation in one patient. All three patients reported improvement in quality of life in the early post-procedure course.
This paper described for the first time the effects of BMMC therapy in patients with severe asthma, providing a basis for subsequent trials to assess the efficacy of this therapy.
This paper reports and discusses the results of an experimental investigation on hydraulic transportation of iron ore concentrate and its effect on slurry wear, pure erosion and pure corrosion of a ...carbon steel pipe. For this, a specially designed test-loop was built to simulate long distance iron ore transportation, allowing also to determine pure erosion effects by means of a specially designed cathodic protection system. Pure corrosion damage was evaluated by linear polarization measurements in filtered ore concentrate, i.e., in the absence of particles. The results revealed that pure erosion and pure corrosion effects were much lower than the measured wear, evaluated as pipe thickness loss, indicating an important synergism between erosion and corrosion. Wear damage results in microcraters aligned in the flow direction, which merge with each other likely due to enhanced electrochemical activity fed by the erosion process. Evaluation of the effect of the pumping time on the ore concentrate characteristics revealed that particles sizes decreased while the sphericity factor increased leading to lower wear rates. Finally, a mechanism explaining the pipeline wear associating erosion, corrosion and the material microstructure as well as a methodology to forecast the pipelines thickness loss as a function of the ore concentrate travelling distance were also proposed.

Dysregulation of the inositol cycle is implicated in a wide variety of human diseases, including developmental defects and neurological diseases. A homozygous frameshift mutation in IMPA1, coding for ...the enzyme inositol monophosphatase 1 (IMPase), has recently been associated with severe intellectual disability (ID) in a geographically isolated consanguineous family in Northeastern Brazil (Figueredo et al., 2016). However, the neurophysiologic mechanisms that mediate the IMPA1 mutation and associated ID phenotype have not been characterized. To this end, resting EEG (eyes-open and eyes-closed) was collected from the Figueredo et al. pedigree. Quantitative EEG measures, including mean power, dominant frequency and dominant frequency variability, were investigated for allelic associations using multivariate family-based association test using generalized estimating equations.
We found that the IMPA1 mutation was associated with relative decreases in frontal theta band power as well as altered alpha-band variability with no regional specificity during the eyes-open condition. For the eyes-closed condition, there was altered dominant theta frequency variability in the central and parietal regions.
These findings represent the first human in vivo phenotypic assessment of brain function disturbances associated with a loss-of-function IMPA1 mutation, and thus an important first step towards an understanding the pathophysiologic mechanisms of intellectual disability associated with the mutation that affects this critical metabolic pathway.

This article goes through the main topics pointed by the standard and the references, investigating their consequences in the converter transformer operation, in order to provide a comprehensive tutorial on design solutions and considerations to deal with those undesirable effects.
Neutrophils are leukocytes that are capable of eliminating both intra‐ and extracellular pathogens by mechanisms such as phagocytosis, degranulation, and release of neutrophil extracellular traps ...(NETs). Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum (H. capsulatum) is a dimorphic fungus with a global distribution that causes histoplasmosis, a disease that is endemic in different geographic areas and is spreading worldwide. The release of NETs has been described as an important host defense mechanism against different fungi; however, there are no reports demonstrating that this process is implicated in neutrophil response to H. capsulatum infection. Therefore, the aim of this work is to investigate whether isolated human neutrophils release NETs in response to H. capsulatum and the potential mechanisms involved, as well as delineate the NETs antifungal activity. Using both confocal fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy techniques, we determined that NETs are released in vitro in response to H. capsulatum via an oxidative mechanism that is downstream of activation of the Syk and Src kinase pathways and is also dependent on CD18. NETs released in response to H. capsulatum yeasts involve the loss of neutrophil viability and are associated with elastase and citrullinated histones, however also can occur in a PAD4 histone citrullination independent pathway. This NETs also presented fungicidal activity against H. capsulatum yeasts. Our findings may contribute to the understanding of how neutrophils recognize and respond as immune effector cells to H. capsulatum, which may lead to better knowledge of histoplasmosis pathophysiology and treatment.
