Engineered carbonaceous nanomaterials (ECNs), including single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene, and graphene oxide (GO), are potentially hazardous to the ...lung. With incremental experience in the use of predictive toxicological approaches, seeking to relate ECN physicochemical properties to adverse outcome pathways (AOPs), it is logical to explore the existence of a common AOP that allows comparative analysis of broad ECN categories. We established an ECN library comprising three different types of SWCNTs, graphene, and graphene oxide (two sizes) for comparative analysis according to a cell-based AOP that also plays a role in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. SWCNTs synthesized by Hipco, arc discharge and Co–Mo catalyst (CoMoCAT) methods were obtained in their as-prepared (AP) state, following which they were further purified (PD) or coated with Pluronic F108 (PF108) or bovine serum albumin (BSA) to improve dispersal and colloidal stability. GO was prepared as two sizes, GO-small (S) and GO-large (L), while the graphene samples were coated with BSA and PF108 to enable dispersion in aqueous solution. In vitro screening showed that AP- and PD-SWCNTs, irrespective of the method of synthesis, as well as graphene (BSA) and GO (S and L) could trigger interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) production in myeloid (THP-1) and epithelial (BEAS-2B) cell lines, respectively. Oropharyngeal aspiration in mice confirmed that AP-Hipco tubes, graphene (BSA-dispersed), GO-S and GO-L could induce IL-1β and TGF-β1 production in the lung in parallel with lung fibrosis. Notably, GO-L was the most pro-fibrogenic material based on rapid kinetics of pulmonary injury. In contrast, PF108-dispersed SWCNTs and -graphene failed to exert fibrogenic effects. Collectively, these data indicate that the dispersal state and surface reactivity of ECNs play key roles in triggering a pro-fibrogenic AOP, which could prove helpful for hazard ranking and a proposed tiered testing approach for large ECN categories.

The valuation of wetland ecosystem services and the construction of environmental landscapes are generally recognized as contributing to the sustainable development of human wellbeing. The valuation ...of ecosystem services plays an important role in planning for the recovery of degraded wetlands and in urban wetland park management; however, the role of the valuation of ecosystem services is always ignored. To bring more intuitive awareness to the importance of the ecological functions of wetlands and to rationally plan wetland parks, the Lotus Lake National Wetland Park (LLNWP), an urban wetland park in Northeast China, was selected as the study area. We referred to the millennium ecosystem assessment (MA) method and calculated the valuation of this park using the market value, benefit transfer, shadow engineering, carbon tax, and travel cost. ArcGIS was used for remote sensing interpretation. The research results were as follows. LLNWP was classified under seven types of land-use. The functions of the ecosystem services included provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services, and their total value in LLNWP was 11.68×10
CNY. Regarding the per-unit area value of the ecological service functions of different land types, it was found that forest swamp > herbaceous swamp > artificial wetland > permanent river > floodplain wetland. Combined with the characteristics of the functions of its ecosystem's services, LLNWP was divided into ecological and socio-cultural functions. Then, according to the main service functions of the different land types, we propose that the space in LLNWP can be reused, and proposal planning and management suggestions can be made with the aim of preserving the basic functions.
Alterations in the gut microbiota have been associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, the dysbiosis shared by different ethnicity and geographic groups, which may associate ...with the disease pathogenesis, remain underexplored. Here, we characterized dysbiosis of the gut microbiota in patients with AMD from Chinese and Swiss cohorts and identified cross-cohort signatures associated with AMD.
Shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed on fecal samples from 30 patients with AMD and 30 healthy subjects. Published datasets with 138 samples from Swiss patients with AMD and healthy subjects were re-analyzed. Comprehensive taxonomic profiling was conducted by matching to the RefSeq genome database, metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) database, and Gut Virome Database (GVD). Functional profiling was performed by reconstruction of the MetaCyc pathways.
The α-diversity of the gut microbiota was decreased in patients with AMD according to taxonomic profiles generated using MAG but not RefSeq database as reference. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was also decreased in patients with AMD. Among AMD-associated bacteria shared between Chinese and Swiss cohorts, Ruminococcus callidus, Lactobacillus gasseri, and Prevotellaceae (f) uSGB 2135 were enriched in patients with AMD, whereas Bacteroidaceae (f) uSGB 1825 was depleted in patients with AMD and was negatively associated with hemorrhage size. Bacteroidaceae was one of the major hosts of phages associated with AMD. Three degradation pathways were reduced in AMD.
These results demonstrated that dysbiosis of the gut microbiota was associated with AMD. We identified cross-cohort gut microbial signatures involving bacteria, viruses, and metabolic pathways, which potentially serve as promising targets for the prevention or treatment of AMD.
Mutations in cardiac potassium and sodium channel genes are responsible for several hereditary cardiac arrhythmia syndromes. We established a denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) ...protocol for rapid mutation screening of these genes, and reported mutations and variations identified by this method. We included 28 patients with Brugada syndrome, 4 with congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS), 11 with drug-induced LQTS, 4 with idiopathic ventricular fibrillation, and 50 normal volunteers. Polymerase chain reactions were performed to amplify the entire coding region of these genes. DHPLC was used to screen for heteroduplexes then DNA sequencing was performed. With this method, we identified the mutation(s) in all four patients with congenital LQTS (KCNQ1 A341V, KCNH2 N633D, KCNH2 2768Cdel and KCNE1 K70 N Y81C double mutations). We also identified the SCN5A A551T mutation in 1 of the 28 patients with Brugada syndrome. All the above-mentioned mutations were novel except KCNQ1 A341V. No mutations were identified in patients with drug-induced LQTS or idiopathic ventricular fibrillation. In total, 25 single nucleotide polymorphisms were identified, 10 of which were novel. In conclusion, DHPLC is a sensitive and rapid method for detection of cardiac sodium and potassium channel gene mutations.
Dry eye (DE) is a common type of ocular surface disease that affects many people. Moxibustion has been widely used in China to treat ocular surface diseases, especially DE. Many clinical trials have ...demonstrated that moxibustion can increase the tear secretion quantity and improve tear film stability. The purpose of this review is to provide an objective and normative systematic review to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of moxibustion treatment in patients with DE.
The systematic review will include all of the randomized controlled trials on the effectiveness and safety of moxibustion for DE. Nine medical databases, namely PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal database (VIP), Wanfang Database, and CBM, will be searched from the date of the database inception to February 28, 2019. We will also search registers of clinical trials, potential gray literature, and conference abstracts. There are no restrictions on language and publication status. Two reviewers will independently select studies, and extract and manage data. The reporting quality and risk of bias will be assessed by other 2 review authors. The primary outcomes will include ocular surface disease index (OSDI) scores, Schirmer test (SIT) results, tear meniscus height (TMH), and tear break-up time (TBUT) values. Quality of life, the main symptom scores before and after treatment, meibomian gland (MG) morphology, total treatment efficacy, and safety will be evaluated as the secondary outcomes. We will use RevMan V.5.3 software to synthesize and analyze data.
This systematic review will provide a comprehensive review of current evidence of moxibustion for DE from the following aspects: the OSDI, SIT, TMH, BUT, quality of life, the main symptom scores, MG morphology, total treatment efficacy, and safety.
The conclusion of our systematic review will provide evidence to determine whether moxibustion is an effective and safe intervention for patients with DE.
Since patients will not be involved in this study, it is not necessary to obtain ethical approval. The protocol and results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

The concentrations of succinic acid, acetic acid, lactic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and isovalerianic acid in GCF were significantly higher in AgP patients than in healthy group, while formic acid was lower in GCF of AgP group compared with healthy group. As effective filters for natural particulate matter (PM), plants play an important role in the reduction of PM, thus improving air quality. However, research on the relationship between leaf ...functional traits and PM retention capacity in different polluted environments remains limited. In this study, six tree species (Abies holophylla, Pinus tabuliformis, Juniperus chinensis, Populus berolinensis, Salix babylonica, Robinia pseudoacacia) in Shenyang city, China were selected as research objects to analyze their PM retention capacity in three different polluted environments (i.e., a busy road, an industrial area of the urban center, and a green space). Additionally, we determined the composition of trace elements associated with the different polluted environments; we also evaluated the impact of different polluted environments on leaf surface traits. The results showed that the actual amounts of PM and trace elements that accumulated on leaf surfaces differed considerably between pollution sites and plant species. The greatest accumulation of PM10 and PM2.5 deposited on the leaves of tested plants was at a traffic-related pollution site and the smallest accumulation was at a park site. There were significant differences in the PM10 and PM2.5 retention capacities of leaves among the different tree species (p < 0.05), in the following order: Abies holophylla > Pinus tabuliformis > Juniperus chinensis > Populus berolinensis > Salix babylonica > Robinia pseudoacacia. The average PM10 and PM2.5 accumulation amounts of Abies holophylla were 1.28–8.74 times higher than these of the other plants (p < 0.05). Trace element analysis showed that the elemental composition of PM accumulated on leaf surfaces was location-dependent. In conclusion, a highly polluted environment can increase the average groove width, stomatal density, and roughness compared to a low-polluted environment. In contrast, the average value of contact angle is higher at low-pollution sites than at other sites. These results suggest that Abies holophylla is the most suitable greening tree species and that its widespread use could significantly reduce PM pollution in urban environments.
In most Old world monkey species, TRIM5α plays a role in combating retroviruses and restricting HIV-1. Alongside TRIM5α, the TRIMCyp fusion gene formed by the retrotransposition of a CypA pseudogene ...cDNA to 3' terminal or 3'-UTR of TRIM5 gene in these monkeys has become a key research area in anti HIV-1 factors. The regional differences, gene frequencies, genotypes, and retrovirus restrictive activities of TRIMCyp vary among different primate species. While the frequencies of cynomolgus TRIMCyp have been studied in several areas of Southeast Asia, the frequency and prevalence of cynomolgus TRIMCyp in China remains unclear. In this study, we screened 1, 594 cynomolgus samples from 11 monkey manufacturers located across 5 provinces in China. Our results showed that the frequencies of TRIMCyp range from 7.65% to 19.79%, markedly lower than the frequencies found in monkey species in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia (ranging from 34.85% to 100%). We speculate that potentially the latter were isolated groups established since 1978. The NE haplotype frequencies of cynomolgus TRIMCyp were 4.93% in China, also significantly lower than those found in species in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia (from 11.1% to 14.3%). Our research provides interesting findings that contribute towards a more firm basis of further studies of HIV-1 animal models and relevant pathogenesis.
