Dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) typically rely on plant functional types (PFTs), which are assigned distinct environmental tolerances and replace one another progressively along ...environmental gradients. Fixed values of traits are assigned to each PFT; modelled trait variation along gradients is thus driven by PFT replacement. But empirical studies have revealed "universal" scaling relationships (quantitative trait variations with climate that are similar within and between species, PFTs and communities); and continuous, adaptive trait variation has been proposed to replace PFTs as the basis for next-generation DGVMs. Here we analyse quantitative leaf-trait variation on long temperature and moisture gradients in China with a view to understanding the relative importance of PFT replacement vs. continuous adaptive variation within PFTs. Leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC) and nitrogen content of dry matter were measured on all species at 80 sites ranging from temperate to tropical climates and from dense forests to deserts. Chlorophyll fluorescence traits and carbon, phosphorus and potassium contents were measured at 47 sites. Generalized linear models were used to relate log-transformed trait values to growing-season temperature and moisture indices, with or without PFT identity as a predictor, and to test for differences in trait responses among PFTs. Continuous trait variation was found to be ubiquitous. Responses to moisture availability were generally similar within and between PFTs, but biophysical traits (LA, SLA and LDMC) of forbs and grasses responded differently from woody plants. SLA and LDMC responses to temperature were dominated by the prevalence of evergreen PFTs with thick, dense leaves at the warm end of the gradient. Nutrient (N, P and K) responses to climate gradients were generally similar within all PFTs. Area-based nutrients generally declined with moisture; Narea and Karea declined with temperature, but Parea increased with temperature. Although the adaptive nature of many of these trait-climate relationships is understood qualitatively, a key challenge for modelling is to predict them quantitatively. Models must take into account that community-level responses to climatic gradients can be influenced by shifts in PFT composition, such as the replacement of deciduous by evergreen trees, which may run either parallel or counter to trait variation within PFTs. The importance of PFT shifts varies among traits, being important for biophysical traits but less so for physiological and chemical traits. Finally, models should take account of the diversity of trait values that is found in all sites and PFTs, representing the "pool" of variation that is locally available for the natural adaptation of ecosystem function to environmental change.
As conventional energy sources like fossil fuels are getting rare, cost of energy production has become higher as well as the concern of environmental pollution by burning of fossil fuels among the ...developed and developing nations. Solar energy is the most vastly available energy and very effective in terms of energy conversion. The most common solar thermal collector used is the black surface as radiant absorber but the thermal energy efficiency is low. In this study, the effect of nanofluid has been analyzed by using as working fluid for direct solar collector. The extinction coefficient of water based aluminum nanofluid has been investigated and evaluated by varying nanoparticle size and volume fraction. The particle size has minimal influence on the optical properties of nanofluid. On the other hand, the extinction coefficient is linearly proportionate to volume fraction. The improvement is promising within 1.0% volume fraction and the nanofluid is almost opaque to light wave.
The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the accuracy of dynamic navigation for the placement of intentionally tilted implants in the posterior maxilla. The study included 12 patients ...with edentulism or continuous multiple tooth loss, who had 48 implants inserted under dynamic navigation guidance in the posterior maxilla. Twenty-four implants near maxillary sinuses were intentionally tilted. The average platform deviation was 1.3 ± 0.4 mm (range 0.8–2.3 mm), apex deviation was 1.1 ± 0.5 mm (range 0.2–2.3 mm), and axis deviation was 3.1 ± 1.0° (range 1.8–6.7°). The other 24 implants were axially positioned. The average platform deviation was 1.5 ± 0.5 mm (range 0.7–3.1 mm), apex deviation was 1.3 ± 0.7 mm (range 0.5–3.1 mm), and axis deviation was 3.2 ± 1.5° (range 1.5–7.7°). There was no significant difference in platform deviation, apex deviation, or axis deviation between the tilted implants and implants in the axial position (P > 0.05). This analysis indicates that a dynamic navigation system can be used as a method of guidance to place intentionally tilted implants as accurately as axially positioned implants in the posterior maxilla, thereby preventing damage to the maxillary sinuses and the need to graft bone.
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease. Body adipose tissue has been shown to be related to the development and progression of knee OA. Among systemic adipose tissues, subcutaneous ...adipose tissue is significantly and negatively associated with muscle mass and forces, and could be related to the presence and progression of knee OA. Visceral adipose tissue is associated with increased cartilage loss and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Intra-muscular adipose tissue is associated with knee osteoarthritic changes, but it remains controversial if inter-muscular adipose tissue has a role to play in the pathogenesis for knee OA. Knee local adipose tissue such as infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) can interact with neighbouring tissues, and may have a biphasic effect in knee OA. The underlying mechanisms for the roles of the systemic and local fat in knee OA could be related to biomechanical, metabolic, inflammatory factors and fat fibrosis, which may have a separated or combined effect on OA. Tissue engineering from systemic or local adipose tissue is a new research direction, and adipose tissue-derived stem cells from systemic or local adipose tissue may be beneficial for OA cartilage repair. Research on systemic and local adipose tissue would provide novel approaches for prevention and treatment of knee OA, but further studies are required to explore the roles of different adipose tissues in knee OA and the effects of stem cells derived from different adipose tissues on knee OA.

The additional plateau-like feature in the Hall conductivity of the lowest Landau level is accompanied by a Shubnikov-de Haas minimum in the longitudinal electrical resistivity and its magnitude relates as 3/5 to the height of the last plateau of the three-dimensional quantum Hall effect. Our findings are consistent with strong electron-electron interactions, stabilizing an unconventional variant of the Hall effect in a three-dimensional material in the quantum limit.
Glycolysis is critical for cancer stem cell reprogramming; however, the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show that pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1) is enriched in ...breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs), whereas depletion of PDK1 remarkably diminishes ALDH
subpopulations, decreases stemness-related transcriptional factor expression, and inhibits sphere-formation ability and tumor growth. Conversely, high levels of PDK1 enhance BCSC properties and are correlated with poor overall survival. In mouse xenograft tumor, PDK1 is accumulated in hypoxic regions and activates glycolysis to promote stem-like traits. Moreover, through screening hypoxia-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in PDK1-positive tissue, we find that lncRNA H19 is responsible for glycolysis and BCSC maintenance. Furthermore, H19 knockdown decreases PDK1 expression in hypoxia, and ablation of PDK1 counteracts H19-mediated glycolysis and self-renewal ability in vitro and in vivo. Accordingly, H19 and PDK1 expression exhibits strong correlations in primary breast carcinomas. H19 acting as a competitive endogenous RNA sequesters miRNA let-7 to release Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α, leading to an increase in PDK1 expression. Lastly, aspirin markedly attenuates glycolysis and cancer stem-like characteristics by suppressing both H19 and PDK1. Thus, these novel findings demonstrate that the glycolysis gatekeeper PDK1 has a critical role in BCSC reprogramming and provides a potential therapeutic strategy for breast malignancy.

The measured properties: magnetization, ultrasound propagation, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, show no signatures of a Fermi surface instability, consistent with in-field single crystal X-ray diffraction. Instead, a direct comparison of the experimental data with linear response calculations based on an effective 3D Dirac Hamiltonian suggests that the quasi-quantization of the observed Hall response emerges from the interplay of the intrinsic properties of the ZrTe

electronic structure and its Dirac-type semi-metallic character.
Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) regulates multiple signaling cascades essential for cell proliferation, growth and differentiation. Using a genetic approach, we found that Drosophila FERM and ...PDZ domain-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase, dPtpmeg, negatively regulates border cell migration and inhibits the EGFR/Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway during wing morphogenesis. We further identified EGFR pathway substrate 15 (Eps15) as a target of dPtpmeg and its human homolog PTPN3. Eps15 is a scaffolding adaptor protein known to be involved in EGFR endocytosis and trafficking. Interestingly, PTPN3-mediated tyrosine dephosphorylation of Eps15 promotes EGFR for lipid raft-mediated endocytosis and lysosomal degradation. PTPN3 and the Eps15 tyrosine phosphorylation-deficient mutant suppress non-small-cell lung cancer cell growth and migration in vitro and reduce lung tumor xenograft growth in vivo. Moreover, depletion of PTPN3 impairs the degradation of EGFR and enhances proliferation and tumorigenicity of lung cancer cells. Taken together, these results indicate that PTPN3 may act as a tumor suppressor in lung cancer through its modulation of EGFR signaling.
Chemical composition modifications of a Laves phase-related BCC solid solution base alloy, Ti15.6Zr2.1V44Cr11.2Mn6.9Fe2.7Co1.4Ni15.7Al0.3, were investigated in order to study the function of each ...constituent element on the structural, gaseous phase and electrochemical hydrogen storage properties of these alloys. In general, removal of Fe and decrease in V-content in exchange for higher Ni-content were found to improve both the electrochemical capacity and high-rate dischargeability, which are related to the decrease in C14-content and increase in TiNi-content. However, total elimination of the C14 phase by removal of Zr resulted in a reduced discharge capacity, a prolonged activation period, and a less catalytic surface for electrochemical reaction. Besides the BCC and C14 phases, the TiNi phase was also found in every alloy in this study, contributing positively to the bulk diffusion of hydrogen while hindering the surface electrochemical reaction.

at fields up to 64 T by a combination of electrical-transport and ultrasound measurements. We find that the Zeeman effect in ZrTe
5
enables an efficient tuning of the 1D Landau band structure with magnetic field. This results in a Lifshitz transition to a 1D Weyl regime in which perfect charge neutrality can be achieved. Since no instability-driven phase transitions destabilise the 1D electron liquid for the investigated field strengths and temperatures, our analysis establishes ZrTe
5
as a thoroughly understood platform for potentially inducing more exotic interaction-driven phases at lower temperatures.
